Resonance surface X-ray scattering technique to determine the structure of electrodeposited Pt ultrathin layers on Au(111) surface

Bimetallic PtAu electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction: challenges and opportunities

Highly active, durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts have an essential role in promoting the continuous operation of advanced energy technologies such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Considering the scarce reserve of Pt and its unsatisfactory overall performance, there is an urgent demand for the development of new generation ORR electrocatalysts that are substantially better than the state-of-the-art supported Pt-based nanocatalysts, such as Pt/C. Among various nanostructures, bimetallic PtAu represents one unique alloy system where highly contradictory performance has been reported. While it is generally accepted that Au may contribute to stabilizing Pt, its role in modulating the intrinsic activity of Pt remains unclear. This perspective will discuss critical structural issues that affect the intrinsic ORR activities of bimetallic PtAu, with an eye on elucidating the origin of seemingly inconsistent experimental results from the literature. As a relatively new class of electrodes, we will also highlight the performance of dealloyed nanoporous gold (NPG) based electrocatalysts, which allow a unique combination of structural properties highly desired for this important reaction. Finally, we will put forward the challenges and opportunities for the incorporation of these advanced electrocatalysts into membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) for actual fuel cells.

Probing the charge distribution at the electrochemical interface

The electrode/electrolyte interface is central to many electrochemical systems; however, gaining insight into the electronic structure at the interface is challenging. Due to its buried nature it is difficult to employ traditional techniques that provide spectroscopic information of localised atoms. To gain new insight into the charge distribution at the interface, we used resonant surface X-ray diffraction to select atoms at the interface via the diffraction conditions and obtained spectroscopic information simultaneously. Coupling the polarisation of the incident X-ray beam with the electron density at the interface allows direct probing of the charge transfer between the metal electrode and the adsorbing species in the electrolyte solution. Results for the adsorption of halide anions onto Cu and Au single crystal electrode surfaces reveal that there is significant modification of the charge distribution of both the surface and sub-surface atomic metal adlayers in the case of ionic bond formation. This has potential impact both in developing a theoretical understanding of the interface structure and in designing new materials for electrochemical applications.

Formation of single-layered Pt islands on Au(111) using irreversible adsorption of Pt and selective adsorption of CO to Pt

This communication compares two different multiple deposition routes of Pt on Au(111), using irreversible adsorption of Pt precursor ions and selective adsorption of CO. A scanning tunneling microscopy study revealed that the conventional route, not utilizing CO, produced multiple-layered Pt cluster islands, while the CO route, employing CO, formed single-layered Pt islands exclusively. The role of CO selectively adsorbed on pre-existing Pt islands was to prevent additional irreversible adsorption of Pt precursor ions onto Pt islands. Cyclic voltammetric works disclosed that the CO and hydrogen coverages on single-layered Pt islands were higher than those on multiple-layered ones, and that the Pt islands on Au were more effective in adsorbing CO than hydrogen.
