Abstract
Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water decomposition provides a promising method for converting solar energy into green hydrogen energy. Indeed, significant advances and improvements have been made in various fundamental aspects for cutting-edge applications, such as water splitting and hydrogen production. However, the fairly low PEC efficiency of water decomposition by a semiconductor photoelectrode and photocorrosion seriously restrict the practical application of photoelectrochemistry. In this review, the mechanisms of PEC water decomposition are first introduced to provide a solid understanding of the PEC process and ensure that this review is accessible to a wide range of readers. Afterwards, notable achievements to date are outlined, and unique approaches involving promising semiconductor materials for efficient PEC hydrogen production, including metal oxide, sulfide, and graphite-phase carbon nitride, are described. Finally, four strategies which can effectively improve the hydrogen production rate-morphological control, doping, heterojunction, and surface modification-are discussed.

Abstract
Reeds live widely in swamp and wetland and have an important ecological balance functions in environmental protection. However, the use of reeds is not effectively. The carbon dots (CDs) have been developed as the family of 0D nanocarbon materials and have all the advantages of the carbon family. In this work, we prepared CDs via hydrothermal method using reed. It is surprising that the reed-derived CDs are an effective reducing agent. A highly catalytically active composite material CDs-Cu2O/CuO was synthesized using economical, green, one-step ultrasonic method and used for the detection of hydrazine. The electrochemical detection of hydrazine was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The result shows that the CDs-Cu2O/CuO exhibited good electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of hydrazine. The fabricated sensor presented a wide linear range from 0.99 μM to 5903 μM and a detection limit of 0.024 μM. In addition, the CDs-Cu2O/CuO exhibited good sensitivity, stability and repeatability. Therefore, the CDs-Cu2O/CuO provides a new idea for the utilization of reed and low-cost electrocatalytic nanocomposite.

Abstract
Sonochemical synthesis of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs) embellished 3D flower-like zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposite based novel electrochemical sensor for the detection of toxic environmental pollutant 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) is detailed in this paper. We have used laser-assisted synthesis technique in the development of 3D flower-like ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and ultrasonication method was employed in preparation of ZnO NPs@fMWCNTs nanocomposite using a high-intensity ultrasonic bath DC200H with power of 200 W/cm2 and 40 KHz frequency. The nanocomposite was meticulously fabricated on screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to carry out various electrochemical analysis. Different characterizations such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) of the materials used in this work were taken. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques are used in electrochemical investigations. We have observed well-defined oxidation and reduction peak currents representing electrochemical mechanism of 4-NP at very low potentials for ZnO NPs@fMWCNTs/SPCE. Furthermore, we were able to achieve efficient electrochemical determination of 4-NP using the developed sensor with a high sensitivity of 11.44 μA μM-1 cm-2 and very low detection limit (LOD) of 0.013 μM in a broad linear range of 0.06-100 μM. All the significant features of a good sensor including anti-interference, good stability, excellent repeatability, and reproducibility were exhibited by the sensor. Moreover, we have tested practical feasibility of sensor by carrying out real sample analysis on different water samples.

Abstract
M-nitrophenol (m-NP) is a high priority environmental pollutant and poses a series of threats on human health. Accurate and rapid detection of m-NP in practical samples is very important as this is the key prerequisite for its effective monitoring. Eelectrochemical sensor, though long serving as highly sensitive and fast analytical tool, suffers from the bottleneck problems like low specificity, poor reproducibility, susceptibility to internal and external disturbances, etc. Herein, we developed a ratiometric electrochemical sensor (R-ECS) for m-NP detection, in which nitrogen-doped Mo2C (N-Mo2C) was deployed as the sensing agent and methylene blue (MB) as the internal reference. Full characterization of N-Mo2C was carried out in the aspects of morphology, composition, chemical bonds and electrochemical behavior, and the sensing performance of the easy-to-operate R-ECS was evaluated. Complete separation of the oxidation peaks of m-NP and MB was achieved using the MB/N-Mo2C composite modified electrode and their ratiometric signals were adopted for quantification of m-NP. The linear relation between the electrical signal and the concentration of m-NP is in the range of 1-1500 μM, with the detection limit of 0.256 μM (S/N = 3). The sensor was applied to measure m-NP in real samples from tap water and river. Experimental results demonstrate that it exhibits decent repeatability, reproducibility, stability and selectivity, which proves its great practical potential as an analytical detector.

Abstract
4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is a priority pollutant in water and is both carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans and wildlife even at very low concentrations. Thus, we herein fabricated a novel molecularly imprinted core-shell nanohybrid as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP. This sensor was functioned by the transfer of fluorescence resonance energy between photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) and 4-NP. This sensor was synthesized by linking organosilane-functionalized CDs to silica-coated CdSe quantum dots (CdSe@SiO2) via Si-O bonds. The nanohybrids were further modified by anchoring a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer on the ratiometric fluorescent sensor through a facile sol-gel polymerization method. The morphology, chemical structure, and optical properties of the resulting molecularly imprinted dual-emission fluorescent probe were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic analysis. The probe was then applied in the detection of 4-NP and exhibited good linearity between 0.051 and 13.7 μg/mL, in addition to a low detection limit of 0.026 μg/mL. Furthermore, the simplicity, reliability, high selectivity, and high sensitivity of the developed sensor demonstrate that the combination of MIPs and ratiometric fluorescence allows the preparation of excellent fluorescent sensors for the detection of trace or ultra-trace analytes.

Abstract
The GO-COOH/AuNPs/ZnAPTPP nanocomposites were constructed using zinc monoamino porphyrin (ZnAPTPP) through π-π conjugation with carboxylated graphene oxide (GO-COOH) loaded with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). Prepared materials were characterized by 1H NMR spectra, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. ITO electrode surface was modified with the prepared nanocomposites showed a good photocurrent response when the bias potential, -0.1V was applied. Nanocomposites modified ITO electrode exhibited good photo-response to the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). ZnAPTPP were excited from HOMO to LUMO under light irradiation, the photoexcited electrons injected into the conduction band of GO-COOH, and then transferred to AuNPs further to the ITO. The presence of GO-COOH and AuNPs improved the separation of photogenerated charges due to their synergetic effect and excellent conductivity. Externally added 4-NP scavenges the photogenerated holes i.e. it acts as a sacrificial electron donor thereby it enhances the photocurrent of the system. Based on this interaction, a novel method for photoelectrochemical detection of 4-NP was developed with a linear range from 0.1 to 15nmol/L (r = 0.996) and detection limit of 0.04nmol/L (S/N = 3). Proposed method is simple and sensitive and this was successfully applied for the quantification 4-NP in river water sample matrices.

Abstract
The toxicity and environmental pollution by nitro aromatic compounds in water samples is the most recognized problem in worldwide. Hence, we have developed a simple and highly sensitive electrochemical method for the determination of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in water samples based on a chitosan (CHT) crafted zinc oxide nanoneedles (ZnO NDs) modified screen printed carbon electrode. The CHT/ZnO NDs were characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction technique. The CHT/ZnO NDs modified electrode showed an enhanced electrocatalytic activity and lower potential detection towards 4-NP, compared with other modified electrodes. Under optimum conditions, the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) response of CHT/ZnO NDs modified electrode displayed a wide linear response range from 0.5 to 400.6μM towards the detection of 4-NP with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.23μM. The CHT/ZnO NDs modified electrode was used for specific and sensitive detection of 4-NP in presence of possible interfering species and common metal ions with long-term stability. In addition, the excellent analytical performance of the proposed sensor was successfully applied for determination of 4-NP in water samples.

Abstract
Reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based Cu2O nanocomposites were prepared by a facile one-pot reaction process. The surface morphology, structure and chemical composition of Cu2O-rGO nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Cu2O-rGO modified Pt rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) was successfully fabricated for the photoelectrocatalytic analysis of hydroquinone (HQ). The photoelectrochemical behaviors of HQ were investigated by the hydrodynamic differential pulse voltammetry technique, using the Cu2O-rGO modified Pt RRDE as the working electrode. The effects of pH values, rotation rates, illumination time and applied bias potential have been discussed. The possible electroactive intermediate product, namely hydroxyhydroquinone, was obtained through the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of HQ on the Cu2O-rGO modified Pt disk electrode, which was compulsively transported and could only be detected at the bare Pt ring electrode at around +0.02 V with an oxidation signal. We found that the peak current at +0.02 V had a good linear relationship with the HQ concentration in the range from 5.0 × 10(-6) to 1.0 × 10(-3) M, with a low limit of detection and excellent reproducibility. The present work has demonstrated that Cu2O-rGO nanocomposites have enhanced photoelectrocatalytic ability for the degradation of organic pollutants and this modified RRDE technique can be potentially applied for the in situ determination of organic pollutants.

Abstract
A series of two-dimensional (2D) interlaced BiOCl/carbon quantum dot composites (denoted as BiOCl/CQD composites) were synthesized by a template-free coprecipitation method at room temperature, and the influence of different particle size distributions of the CQDs on the physiochemical properties and photocatalytic activities of the BiOCl/CQD composites was studied. CQDs can change the morphology and increase the specific surface area of the BiOCl/CQD composites. Moreover, the particle size distribution of the CQDs (CQD loading amount) has some effect on the light absorption, separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and photocatalytic performance of the BiOCl/CQD composites. The optimized size distribution of the CQDs is 50-150 nm. BiOCl/CQD (50-150 nm) composites showed the best improvement of light absorption and the highest photocurrent density of 0.44 μA cm(-2), and exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity with almost 100% 2-nitrophenol removal under visible-light irradiation. The high efficacy of BiOCl/CQD (50-150 nm) composites could be attributed to their excellent light absorption and highly effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers.

Abstract
Conductive polypyrrole-polyaniline/TiO2 nanocomposites (PPy-PANI/TiO2) were prepared by in situ oxidative copolymerization of pyrrole and aniline monomers in the presence of TiO2. For comparison studies, polypyrrole/TiO2 (PPy/TiO2) and polyaniline/TiO2 (PANI/TiO2) were also prepared. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, zeta potential analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and photocurrent tests. In contrast to PPy/TiO2 and PANI/TiO2, PPy-PANI/TiO2 exhibits obvious absorption in the visible-light range, and is much superior to PPy/TiO2 and PANI/TiO2 in thermal stability. It is found that PPy-PANI/TiO2 performs well in the visible-light photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol. The optimized pyrrole : aniline : TiO2 molar ratio for best performance is 0.75 : 0.25 : 100. The efficacy of PPy-PANI/TiO2 is attributed to its conductivity, conjugated structure, as well as to the synergy amidst polypyrrole, polyaniline and TiO2.

Abstract
The use of binary semiconductor oxide anodes for the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of organic species (both in solution and gas phase) is reviewed. In the first part of the review, the principle of electrically assisted photocatalysis is presented, the preparation methods for the most common semiconductor oxide catalysts are briefly mentioned, while the advantages of appropriately chosen semiconductor combinations for efficient UV and visible (vis) light utilization are highlighted. The second part of the review focuses on the discussion of TiO(2)-WO(3) photoanodes (among the most studied bi-component semiconductor oxide systems) and in particular on coatings prepared by electrodeposition/electrosynthesis or powder mixtures (the focus of the authors' research during recent years). Studies concerning the microscopic, spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical characterization of the catalysts are presented and examples of photoanode activity towards typical dissolved organic contaminants as well as organic vapours are given. Particular emphasis is paid to: (a) The dependence of photoactivity on catalyst morphology and composition and (b) the possibility of carrying out photoelectrochemistry in all-solid cells, thus opening up the opportunity for photoelectrocatalytic air treatment.

Abstract
A graphene oxide (GO) film coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated for sensitive determination of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The GO-based sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviors of 4-NP at the GO-film coated GCE were investigated in detail. In 0.1M acetate buffer with a pH of 4.8, 4-NP yields a very sensitive and well-defined reduction peak at the GO-modified GCE. It is found that the GO film exhibits obvious electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of 4-NP since it not only increases the reduction peak current but also lowers the reduction overpotential. Based on this, an electrochemical method was proposed for the direct determination of 4-NP. Various kinetic parameters such as transfer electron number, transfer proton number and standard heterogeneous rate constant were calculated, and various experimental parameters were also optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the reduction peak current varies linearly with the concentration of 4-NP ranging from 0.1 to 120 μM, and the detection limit is 0.02 μM at the signal noise ratio of 3. Moreover, the fabricated sensor presented high selectivity and long-term stability. This electrochemical sensor was further applied to determine 4-NP in real water samples, and it showed great promise for simple, sensitive, and quantitative detection of 4-NP.

Abstract
Electrochemical detection of p-nitrophenol (P-NP) using a highly sensitive and selective platform based on single-walled carbon nanotube/pyrenecyclodextrin (SWCNT/PyCD) nanohybrids is described for the first time. The electrochemical performance of the SWCNT/PyCD nanohybrid electrode was fully compared with bare glassy carbon, single-SWCNT, single-PyCD, and SWCNT/CD (without pyrene rings) electrodes. Besides the techniques of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometric transients, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) has been used for the detection of P-NP without any interference from o-nitrophenol (O-NP) at the potentials of -0.80 and -0.67 V, respectively. The SWCNT/PyCD nanohybrid electrode is highly sensitive, and it shows an ultrahigh sensitivity of 18.7 μA/μM toward P-NP in contrast to the values reported previously. The detection limit (S/N = 3) of the SWCNT/PyCD nanohybrid electrode toward P-NP is 0.00086 μM (0.12 ppb), which is well below the allowed limit in drinking water, 0.43 μM, given by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The analytical performance of the SWCNT/PyCD nanohybrid electrode toward P-NP is superior to the existing electrodes.
