Abstract
Direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) have gained immense importance as a source of clean energy for portable electronic devices. It outperforms other fuel cells in several key operational and safety parameters. However, slow kinetics of the formic acid oxidation at the anode remains the main obstacle in achieving a high power output in DFAFCs. Noble metal-based electrocatalysts are effective, but are expensive and prone to CO poisoning. Recently, a substantial volume of research work have been dedicated to develop inexpensive, high activity and long lasting electrocatalysts. Herein, recent advances in the development of anode electrocatalysts for DFAFCs are presented focusing on understanding the relationship between activity and structure. This review covers the literature related to the electrocatalysts based on noble metals, non-noble metals, metal-oxides, synthesis route, support material, and fuel cell performance. The future prospects and bottlenecks in the field are also discussed at the end.

Electrocatalytic Glucose Oxidation at Coral-Like Pd/C3N4-C Nanocomposites in Alkaline Media. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
Porous coral-like Pd/C3N4-C nanocomposites are fabricated by a simple one-pot chemical reduction method. Their electrocatalytic performance is ~50% higher than a carbon-loaded palladium electrocatalyst (Pd/C) in alkaline media. This confirms that the glucose electrooxidation and sensing performance of a Pd/C can be improved by the synergy of graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), though C3N4 exhibits poor electrical conductivity. Compared to Pd/C, the size of Pd nanoparticles in Pd/C3N4-C decreases. As a result, the activity of Pd/C3N4-C is enhanced due to the higher dispersion and the synergistic effect. Pd/C3N4-C presents a rapid response and high sensitivity to glucose. The sensitivity for glucose sensing at Pd/C3N4-C is 3.3 times that of at Pd/C in the range of 0.001–10 mM. In the lower range of 0.001–1 mM, the sensitivity at Pd/C3N4-C is ~10 times greater than Pd/C.

Abstract
This review gives an overview of the electrochemical investigations about the properties of various types of graphene composites in the ethanol oxidation. Various routes to provide appropriate graphene-based materials required electrochemical techniques for investigation of different types of the materials as well as their performance and efficacy in ethanol oxidation are discussed in detail. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the incorporation of suitable materials, e. g. noble metals (graphene-supported binary and ternary metal nanoparticles), metal oxides, conductive polymer, etc, with graphene results in excellent electrocatalytic activity, superb durability and selectivity in ethanol oxidation. Immobilization of electrocatalytically active NPs on graphene supports using physical approaches is considered as an effective route to prepare direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) anode catalysts.

Abstract
The tolerance of the electrode against the CO species absorbed upon the surface presents the biggest dilemma of the alcohol fuel cells. Here we report for the first time that the inclusion of (Zr, Ce)O2 solid solution as the supporting material can significantly improve the anti-CO-poisoning as well as the activity of Pd/C catalyst for ethylene glycol electro-oxidation in KOH medium. In particular, the physical origin of the improved electrocatalytic properties has been unraveled by first principle calculations. The 3D stereoscopic Pd cluster on the surface of (Zr, Ce)O2 solid solution leads to weaker Pd-C bonding and smaller CO desorption driving force. These results support that the Pd/ZrO2-CeO2/C composite catalyst could be used as a promising effective candidate for direct alcohol fuel cells application.
