Seebeck Coefficient of Ionic Conductors from Bayesian Regression Analysis

We propose a novel approach to evaluating the ionic Seebeck coefficient in electrolytes from relatively short equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, based on the Green-Kubo theory of linear response and Bayesian regression analysis. By exploiting the probability distribution of the off-diagonal elements of a Wishart matrix, we develop a consistent and unbiased estimator for the Seebeck coefficient, whose statistical uncertainty can be arbitrarily reduced in the long-time limit. We assess the efficacy of our method by benchmarking it against extensive equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations conducted on molten CsF using empirical force fields. We then employ this procedure to calculate the Seebeck coefficient of molten NaCl, KCl, and LiCl using neural network force fields trained on ab initio data over a range of pressure-temperature conditions.

Seebeck, Peltier, and Soret effects: On different formalisms for transport equations in thermogalvanic cells

Thermogalvanic cells convert waste heat directly to electric work. There is an abundance of waste heat in the world and thermogalvanic cells may be underused. We discuss theoretical tools that can help us understand and therefore improve on cell performance. One theory is able to describe all aspects of the energy conversion: nonequilibrium thermodynamics. We recommend to use the theory with operationally defined, independent variables, as others have done before. These describe well-defined experiments. Three invariance criteria serve as a basis for any description: of local electroneutrality, entropy production invariance, and emf's independence of the frame of reference. Alternative formalisms, using different sets of variables, start with ionic or neutral components. We show that the heat flux is not the same in the two formalisms and derive a new relationship between the heat fluxes. The heat flux enters the definition of the Peltier coefficient and is essential for the understanding of the Peltier heat at the electrode interfaces and of the Seebeck coefficient of the cell. The Soret effect can occur independently of any Seebeck effect, but the Seebeck effect will be affected by the presence of a Soret effect. Common misunderstandings are pointed out. Peltier coefficients are needed for the interpretation and design of experiments.

Thermal Conductivity of Molten Carbonates with Dispersed Solid Oxide from Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the applications of composite mixtures containing molten salt and solid oxide for thermal energy conversion and storage systems. This highlights that thermal conductivity of the composites are central for the purpose of designing and devising processes. Measuring the thermal conductivity of molten samples at elevated temperatures remains challenging. In this study, the possibility to use heat flux differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to measure the thermal conductivity of molten samples at elevated temperatures is reported for the first time. The thermal conductivity of composite mixtures containing eutectic (Li,Na)₂CO₃ with and without selected solid oxides at ~675 °C was determined by using the proposed DSC approach. This mixture is a candidate for high temperature waste heat conversion to electric energy. In the DSC measurement program, steps with repeated thermal cycles between 410 and 515 °C were included to limit the effect of the interface thermal contact resistance. The determined values 0.826 ± 0.001, and 0.077 ± 0.004 W m⁻¹K⁻¹ for the carbonate mixtures with and without solid MgO were found to match the reliable analysis at similar conditions.
