Modification Strategies for Development of 2D Material-Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

2D materials, such as graphene, MXenes (metal carbides and nitrides), graphdiyne (GDY), layered double hydroxides, and black phosphorus, are widely used as electrocatalyst supports for alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs) owing to their large surface area and unique 2D charge transport channels. Furthermore, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for AORs via tuning the structure of 2D support materials has recently become a hot area. This article provides a critical review on modification strategies to develop 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AOR. First, the principles and influencing factors of electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols (such as methanol and ethanol) are introduced. Second, surface molecular functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite hybridization are deeply discussed as the modification strategies to improve 2D material catalyst supports for AORs. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AORs are outlined. This review will promote further efforts in the development of electrocatalysts for AORs.

Enhancement Strategy of Photoelectrocatalytic Activity of Cobalt-Copper Layer Double Hydroxide toward Methanol Oxidation: Cerium Doping and Modification with Porphyrin

Designing durable, high-active, and low-cost noble-metal-free photoelectrocatalysts for methanol electrooxidation is highly demanded but remains a challenge. Herein, the photoelectrocatalytic activity of cobalt-copper layer double hydroxide (CoCu-LDH) for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in the alkaline media under light was remarkably enhanced by cerium (Ce) doping and further by 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxylphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) modification. TCPP/Ce-CoCu-LDH exhibits a remarkable mass activity of 1788.2 mA mg^-1 in 1 mol L^-1 KOH with 1 mol L^-1 methanol under light, which is 2.3 and 1.8 times higher than that of CoCu-LDH (782.2 mA mg^-1) and Ce-CoCu-LDH (987.4 mA mg^-1). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence emission spectra reveal that TCPP/Ce-CoCu-LDH can effectively utilize the visible light and inhibit the electron-hole pairs' recombination because of the introduction of porphyrin. Furthermore, more active sites and the greater electrical conductivity of TCPP/Ce-CoCu-LDH also contributed to the high photoelectrocatalytic activity. Thus, TCPP/Ce-CoCu-LDH can be used as a low-cost alternative for Pt-based catalyst toward MOR.

Recent Advances in Layered-Double-Hydroxides Based Noble Metal Nanoparticles Efficient Electrocatalysts

With the energy crisis and environmental pollution becoming more and more serious, it is urgent to develop renewable and clean energy. Hydrogen production from electrolyzed water is of great significance to solve the energy crisis and environmental problems in the future. Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) materials have been widely studied in the electrocatalysis field, due to their unique layered structure, tunable metal species and highly dispersed active sites. Moreover, the LDHs supporting noble metal catalysts obtained through the topotactic transformation of LDHs precursors significantly reduce the energy barrier of electrolyzing water, showing remarkable catalytic activity, good conductivity and excellent durability. In this review, we give an overview of recent advances on LDHs supporting noble metal catalysts, from a brief introduction, to their preparation and modification methods, to an overview of their application in the electrocatalysis field, as well as the challenges and outlooks in this promising field on the basis of current development.

Metal-Based Electrocatalysts for Methanol Electro-Oxidation: Progress, Opportunities, and Challenges

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are among the most promising portable power supplies because of their unique advantages, including high energy density/mobility of liquid fuels, low working temperature, and low emission of pollutants. Various metal-based anode catalysts have been extensively studied and utilized for the essential methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) due to their superior electrocatalytic performance. At present, especially with the rapid advance of nanotechnology, enormous efforts have been exerted to further enhance the catalytic performance and minimize the use of precious metals. Constructing multicomponent metal-based nanocatalysts with precisely designed structures can achieve this goal by providing highly tunable compositional and structural characteristics, which is promising for the modification and optimization of their related electrochemical properties. The recent advances of metal-based electrocatalytic materials with rationally designed nanostructures and chemistries for MOR in DMFCs are highlighted and summarized herein. The effects of the well-defined nanoarchitectures on the improved electrochemical properties of the catalysts are illustrated. Finally, conclusive perspectives are provided on the opportunities and challenges for further refining the nanostructure of metal-based catalysts and improving electrocatalytic performance, as well as the commercial viability.

Strong Fe3+-O(H)-Pt Interfacial Interaction Induced Excellent Stability of Pt/NiFe-LDH/rGO Electrocatalysts

Agglomeration-triggered deactivation of supported platinum electrocatalysts markedly hinders their application in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this study, graphene-supported nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH/rGO), in which Fe³⁺ was introduced to replace Ni²⁺ partially in the Ni(OH)₂ lattice to provide stronger metal–support bonding sites, was utilized to immobilize Pt nanoparticles (NPs). Given the optimized metal–support interfacial contact (Fe³⁺-O(H)-Pt) between Pt NPs and NiFe-LDH/rGO nanosheets for Pt/NiFe-LDH/rGO electrocatalysts, the Pt/NiFe-LDH/rGO electrocatalysts displayed dramatically enhanced durability than that of Pt/Ni(OH)₂/rGO counterpart as well as commercial Pt/C, and 86.5% of its initial catalytic activity can be maintained even after 1200 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests during MOR. First-principle calculations toward the resultant M-O(H)-Pt (M = Fe³⁺, Ni²⁺) interfacial structure further corroborates that the NiFe-LDH nanosheets can provide stronger bonding sites (via the Fe³⁺-O(H)-Pt bonds) to immobilize Pt NPs than those of Ni(OH)₂ nanosheets (via the Ni²⁺-O(H)-Pt bonds).
