In situ XAFS Study of Palladium Electrodeposition at the Liquid/Liquid Interface

Recent Progresses in Nanometer Scale Analysis of Buried Layers and Interfaces in Thin Films by X-rays and Neutrons

In the early 1960s, scientists achieved the breakthroughs in the fields of solid surfaces and artificial layered structures. The advancement of surface science has been supported by the advent of ultra-high vacuum technologies, newly discovered and established scanning probe microscopy with atomic resolution, as well as some other advanced surface-sensitive spectroscopy and microscopy. On the other hand, it has been well recognized that a number of functions are related to the structures of the interfaces, which are the thin planes connecting different materials, most likely by layering thin films. Despite the scientific significance, so far, research on such buried layers and interfaces has been limited, because the probing depth of almost all existing sophisticated analytical methods is limited to the top surface. The present article describes the recent progress in the nanometer scale analysis of buried layers and interfaces, particularly by using X-rays and neutrons. The methods are essentially promising to non-destructively probe such buried structures in thin films. The latest scientific research has been reviewed, and includes applications to bio-chemical, organic, electronic, magnetic, spintronic, self-organizing and complicated systems as well as buried liquid-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces. Some emerging analytical techniques and instruments, which provide new attractive features such as imaging and real time analysis, are also discussed.

Template-Free and Spontaneous Formation of Vertically Aligned Pd Nanofiber Arrays at the Liquid-Liquid Interface between Redox-Active Ionic Liquid and Water

Vertically aligned Pd nanofiber arrays (NFAs) have been prepared at the liquid-liquid interface between redox-active ionic liquid (RAIL) and water (W) via a template-free manner. The RAIL with high hydrophobicity, (ferrocenylmethyl)dodecyldimethylammonium bis(nonafluorobutanesulfonyl)amide, plays dual roles of reducing agent for Pd precursor ions and the hydrophobic liquid phase simultaneously, and the RAIL|W interface has been utilized as the formation site for the spontaneous growth of Pd NFAs. The Pd NFAs consist of three parts: layers formed by partly connected particles on the top, NFAs in the middle, and firm sheetlike layers on the bottom. Because of the top and bottom supporting layers, the antideformation ability and durability of the Pd NFAs with a length reaching several micrometers are enhanced. A possible mechanism for the formation of the Pd NFAs has been discussed. The Pd NFAs show a good stability and a higher electrocatalytic activity toward the ethanol oxidation reaction than a commercial Pd/C catalyst. The present study provides a new strategy for the template-free and spontaneous formation of Pd NFAs.

Electrodeposition of Gold Nanostructures at the Interface of a Pickering Emulsion

The controlled electrodeposition of nanoparticles at the surface of an emulsion droplet offers enticing possibilities in regards to the formation of intricate structures or fine control over the locus or duration of nanoparticle growth. In this work we develop electrochemical control over the spontaneous reduction of aqueous phase Au(III) by heterogeneous electron transfer from decamethylferrocene present in an emulsion droplet - resulting in the growth of nanoparticles. As gold is a highly effective conduit for the passage of electrical current, even on the nanoscale, the deposition significantly enhances the current response for the single electron transfer of decamethylferrocene when acting as a redox indicator. The nanostructures formed at the surface of the emulsion droplets were imaged by cryo-TEM, providing an insight into the types of structures that may form when stabilised by the interface alone, and how the structures are able to conduct electrons.

X-ray Raman scattering: a new in situ probe of molecular structure during nucleation and crystallization from liquid solutions

X-ray Raman scattering (XRS) has been used for in situ probing of solute molecule speciation in solution during cooling crystallization.
