Abstract
Due to the energy requirements for various human activities, and the need for a substantial change in the energy matrix, it is important to research and design new materials that allow the availability of appropriate technologies. In this sense, together with proposals that advocate a reduction in the conversion, storage, and feeding of clean energies, such as fuel cells and electrochemical capacitors energy consumption, there is an approach that is based on the development of better applications for and batteries. An alternative to commonly used inorganic materials is conducting polymers (CP). Strategies based on the formation of composite materials and nanostructures allow outstanding performances in electrochemical energy storage devices such as those mentioned. Particularly, the nanostructuring of CP stands out because, in the last two decades, there has been an important evolution in the design of various types of nanostructures, with a strong focus on their synergistic combination with other types of materials. This bibliographic compilation reviews state of the art in this area, with a special focus on how nanostructured CP would contribute to the search for new materials for the development of energy storage devices, based mainly on the morphology they present and on their versatility to be combined with other materials, which allows notable improvements in aspects such as reduction in ionic diffusion trajectories and electronic transport, optimization of spaces for ion penetration, a greater number of electrochemically active sites and better stability in charge/discharge cycles.

Abstract
p-Phenylenediamine (p-PDA) is a monomer of many important polymers such as kevlar, twaron, poly-p-PDA. Most of the noticed polymers formation is initiated by a free-radical, but their polymerization mechanism is not elucidated computationally. The proposed study helps to fully understand the frequently utilized initiator/oxidant, potassium persulfate (K2 S2 O8 ) role in the aromatic diamines polymerization, which support experimental protocols, and a polymer scope. The formation of the poly-p-PDA is studied with the density functional theory (DFT) B3LYP-D3 functional using experimental polymerization parameters (0°C and aqueous media). K2 S2 O8 initiated free-radical polymerization of p-PDA is studied in detail, taking into account sulfate free-radical (SO4 - )· , SFR, persulfate anion (S2 O8 )2- , PA and K2 S2 O8 cluster, PP. The reaction mechanism is calculated as the conversion of p-PDA to free-radical, the p-PDA free-radical attack to the next p-PDA (dimerization), ammonia extrusion from the dimer adduct, the dimer adduct conversion to the free-radical (completion of p-PDA polymerization cycle) for the polymer chain elongation. Calculations show that the dimerization step is the rate-limiting step with a 29.2 kcal/mol energy barrier when SFR initiates polymerization. In contrast, the PA-assisted dimerization energy barrier is only 12.7 kcal/mol. PP supported polymerization is calculated to have very shallow energy barriers completing the polymerization cycle, i.e., dimerization (TS2K, ∆G‡ = 11.6 kcal/mol) and ammonia extrusion (TS3K, ∆G‡ = 6.7 kcal/mol).

Abstract
In this work, synthesis and optical properties of a new composite based on poly(o-phenylenediamine) (POPD) fiber like structures, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) spheres and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) are reported. As increasing the PVDF weight in the mixture of the chemical polymerization reaction of o-phenylenediamine, the presence of the PVDF spheres onto the POPD fibers surface is highlighted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The down-shift of the Raman line from 1421 cm−1 to 1415 cm−1 proves the covalent functionalization of DWNTs with the POPD-PVDF blends. The changes in the absorbance of the IR bands peaked around 840, 881, 1240 and 1402 cm−1 indicate hindrance steric effects induced of DWNTs to the POPD fiber like structures and the PVDF spheres, as a consequence of the functionalization process of carbon nanotubes with macromolecular compounds. The presence of the PVDF spheres onto the POPD fiber like structures surface induces a POPD photoluminescence (PL) quenching process. An additional PL quenching process of the POPD-PVDF blends is reported to be induced in the presence of DWNTs. The studies of anisotropic PL highlight a change of the angle of the binding of the PVDF spheres onto the POPD fiber like structures surface from 50.2° to 38° when the carbon nanotubes concentration increases in the POPD-PVDF/DWNTs composites mass up to 2 wt.%.

Abstract
With the development of wearable and flexible electronic devices, there is an increasing demand for new types of flexible energy storage power supplies. The flexible supercapacitor has the advantages of fast charging and discharging, high power density, long cycle life, good flexibility, and bendability. Therefore, it exhibits great potential for use in flexible electronics. In flexible supercapacitors, graphene materials are often used as electrode materials due to the advantages of their high specific surface area, high conductivity, good mechanical properties, etc. In this review, the classification of flexible electrodes and some common flexible substrates are firstly summarized. Secondly, we introduced the advantages and disadvantages of five graphene-based materials used in flexible supercapacitors, including graphene quantum dots (GQDs), graphene fibers (GFbs), graphene films (GFs), graphene hydrogels (GHs), and graphene aerogels (GAs). Then, we summarized the latest developments in the application of five graphene-based materials for flexible electrodes. Finally, the defects and outlooks of GQDs, GFbs, GFs, GHs, and GAs used in flexible electrodes are given.

Abstract
The discovery and development of novel approaches, materials and manufacturing processes in the field of energy are compelling increasing recognition as a major challenge for contemporary societies. The performance and lifetime of energy devices are critically dependent on nanoscale interfacial phenomena. From the viewpoint of materials design, the improvement of current technologies inevitably relies on gaining control over the complex interface between dissimilar materials. In this sense, interfacial nanoarchitectonics with polymer brushes has seen growing interest due to its potential to overcome many of the limitations of energy storage and conversion devices. Polymer brushes offer a broad variety of resources to manipulate interfacial properties and gain molecular control over the synergistic combination of materials. Many recent examples show that the rational integration of polymer brushes in hybrid nanoarchitectures greatly improves the performance of energy devices in terms of power density, lifetime and stability. Seen in this light, polymer brushes provide a new perspective from which to consider the development of hybrid materials and devices with improved functionalities. The aim of this review is therefore to focus on what polymer brush-based solutions can offer and to show how the practical use of surface-grafted polymer layers can improve the performance and efficiency of fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, organic radical batteries, supercapacitors, photoelectrochemical cells and photovoltaic devices.

Abstract
Widening the voltage window is often proposed as a way to increase the energy density of aqueous supercapacitors. However, attempting to operate beyond the aqueous supercapacitor stability region can undermine the supercapacitor reliability due to pronounced electrolyte decomposition, which can lead to a significant self-discharge process. To minimize this challenge, charge injection by grafting o-benzenediol onto the carbon electrode is proposed through a simple electrochemical cycling technique. Due to charge injection from o-benzenediol into the carbon electrode, the equilibrium potential of the individual electrode can be reduced. In addition, due to its small molecular size, charge distribution, which is commonly faced by bulk pseudocapacitive materials, is also avoided. The assembled supercapacitor based on the o-benzenediol-grafted carbon demonstrated a maximum energy density of 24 Wh kg-1 and a maximum power density of 69 kW kg-1 , with a retention of 89 % after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g-1 . A low self-discharge of about 4 h was recorded; this could be attributed to the low driving force arising from the lower equilibrium potential. Thus, the proposed technique may provide insight towards the tuning of the equilibrium potential to attain reliable, high-performing supercapacitors with a low self-discharge process.

Abstract
Biomass with abundant resources and low price is regarded as potential sources of functionalized carbon-based energy storage and conversion electrode materials. Rational construction and development of biomass-derived carbon equipped with proper morphology, structure, and composition prove the key to highly efficient utilization of advanced energy storage systems. Herein, we use palm tree bark hair as a biomass source and prepare edge/defect-rich quasi-mesoporous carbon (QMC) by a direct pyrolysis followed by NaOH etching strategy. Then, the edge-rich quasi-mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (QMNC) is successfully fabricated through the hydrothermal method by making use of edge/defect-rich QMC and urea as carbon precursor and nitrogen source, respectively. The microstructure and composition of the resultant carbon materials are all detected by a series of techniques. In the meantime, the influence of the etching process on the preparation and electrochemical performance of edge-rich QMNC is systematically explored. The relevant results manifest that the as-prepared edge/defect-rich QMC not only possesses edge-rich plane, much increased specific surface area (SSA), and special quasi-mesopores but also reverses good conductivity and gains sufficient defects for subsequent N doping. After introducing N atoms, the obtained edge-rich QMNC exhibits outstanding capacitive property and oxygen reduction reaction performance, which are mainly attributed to the co-effect of edge-rich plane, large SSA, suitable pore structures, and effective N doping (including high doping amount and optimized N configurations). Clearly, our work not only offers an excellent biomass-derived carbon-based electrode material but also opens a fresh avenue for the development of advanced biomass-derived carbon-based electrode materials.

Abstract
Preparation of graphene (GR) based electrode materials with excellent capacitive properties is of great importance to supercapacitors. Herein, we report a facile approach to prepare partially reduced graphite oxide (PRG) nanosheets by reducing graphite oxide (GO) using commercial Cu2O powder as a reduction agent, moreover, we demonstrate that the PRG nanosheets can act as building blocks for assembling hydrogels (PRGH) and flexible film (PRGF). The obtained PRGH and PRGF can be directly used as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors and give high specific capacitance (292 and 273 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 in a three-electrode system, respectively) due to the existence of oxygen-containing functional groups in PRG nanosheets. PRG also gives excellent rate ability and cycle stability. This study suggests a facile pathway to produce GR-based materials with excellent capacitive properties and is meaningful for flexible supercapacitors.
