Redox switching of polyoxometalate-doped polypyrrole films in ionic liquid media

Cation effect on the electrochemical reduction of polyoxometalates in room temperature ionic liquids

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are compounds that undergo multiple successive one-electron redox transitions, making them convenient model reactants to study ion solvation effects. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are solvents made entirely of ions, and are expected to have interactions with the highly negatively charged POM reduction products. In this work, 12 RTILs with a range of different anions ([FSI]−=bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, [TFSI]−=bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [BETI]−=bis(pentafluoroethylsulfonyl)imide, [BF4]−, [PF6]−) and cations (imidazolium, pyrrolidinium, sulfonium, ammonium, phosphonium) were employed as solvents to study the kinetics and thermodynamics of [S2W18O62]4− reduction, to shed light on solvation effects and ion-pairing effects caused by different RTIL structures. Up to six reversible reduction processes (producing highly negatively charged [S2W18O62]10−) were observed. For the RTILs that showed multiple processes, a clear trend in both the thermodynamics (inferred from the reduction peak potentials) and kinetics (inferred from the peak-to-peak separation) was observed, in the order: imidazolium < sulfonium ≈ ammonium < pyrrolidinium < phosphonium, supporting strong interactions of the negatively charged POM reduction products with the cation. Two related POMs, [P2W18O62]6− and [PW12O40]3−, were also studied in the optimum RTIL found for [S2W18O62]4− ([C2mim][FSI]=1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide), revealing fast kinetics and asymmetric peaks for [PW12O40]3−. This work demonstrates the importance of understanding the solvation effects of RTIL ions for highly charged electrogenerated products, allowing tuning of the RTIL structure to achieve the optimum kinetics and thermodynamics for an electrochemical process.

Catalytic synthesis of chloroacetates with thermoregulated ionic liquids based on vanadium-substituted polyoxometalate

A series of polyoxometalate-based ionic liquid (POM-IL) catalysts with functional sulfonic acid groups, [TEAPS]_3+nPW_12−nV_nO₄₀ (n = 1, 2, 3) were synthesized and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), UV-Vis spectrophotometry (UV), potentiometric titration and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The catalytic ability and reusability of the POM-IL catalysts were evaluated on esterification of chloroacetic acid and n-amyl alcohol. The optimum reaction conditions, 0.2 g of the catalyst amount, 10 mL of water carrier, 140 °C of reaction temperature, and 1.2/1 of the molar ratio of alcohol/acid, were obtained by an orthogonal test. [TEAPS]₅PW₁₀V₂O₄₀ was found to be the best active catalyst with an esterification rate of 98.75% and could be reused five times without significant decrease in activity. The ionic liquid acted as a temperature-responsive catalyst, forming a homogeneous mixture with the reactants at reaction temperature, and could be precipitated and separated from products when the reaction ends at ambient temperature. Therefore, an environmentally friendly and highly efficient approach for the synthesis of chloroacetates is provided.

The ionic liquid catalyst [TEAPS]₅PW₁₀V₂O₄₀ exhibited good activity and reusability in the esterification process owing to its acidity and thermoregulated properties.

Polyoxometalate-based microcrystal arrays patterned on air-grid superwettable surface

Surface patterning of polyoxometalates (POMs) is an important step to gain functional materials and devices. However, some special requirements such as complex operation steps or strict synthesis environment greatly limit their further applications. Herein, we have employed a simple and universal strategy for patterning POM-based microcrystal arrays on air-grid superwettable surfaces. The size and distribution of POM crystals were precisely adjusted by varying the pillar parameter of superwettable surface and concentration of POM mother liquid. We envision that this POM patterning method may bring valuable insights for designing POM-based functional materials and devices.
