Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article critically reviews recent research on the use of trimetallic nanomaterials for the fabrication of non-enzymatic glucose sensors (NEGS), also known as fourth-generation glucose sensors (FGGS). SIGNIFICANCE Diabetes is a prevalent chronic disease worldwide, and glucose monitoring is crucial for its management. However, conventional enzymatic glucose sensors suffer from several technological drawbacks, and there is a need to develop new-generation glucose sensors that can overcome these limitations. NEGS, particularly those composed of trimetallic nanocomposites, have demonstrated promising results in terms of improved shelf life, higher sensitivity, and simplicity of operation during glucose measurement. METHODS In this review, we discuss the different trimetallic nanomaterials developed and used by researchers in recent years for glucose detection, including their mechanisms of action. We also provide a brief discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of FGGS-based trimetallic nanomaterials, as well as the industrial challenges in this area of research. RESULTS Trimetallic nanomaterials for FGGS have shown excellent reproducibility and high stability, making them suitable for continuous glucose monitoring. The different types of trimetallic nanomaterials have varying sensing properties, and their performance can be tuned by controlling their synthesis parameters. CONCLUSION Trimetallic nanomaterials are a promising avenue for the development of FGGS, recent research has demonstrated their potential for glucose monitoring. However, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed before their widespread adoption, such as their long-term stability and cost-effectiveness. Further research in this area is needed to overcome these challenges and to develop commercially viable FGGS for diabetes management.

[PMID: 36918633 PMCID: PMC10014860 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-023-31108-7] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/09/2022] [Accepted: 03/06/2023] [Indexed: 03/16/2023] Open
Abstract
Aromatic amines are a large group of chemical compounds that have attracted the attention of researchers due to their toxicity and carcinogenicity. This study aimed to develop an efficient method for sampling and analysis of aromatic amines (Aniline, N, N-dimethylaniline, 2-chloroaniline, and 3-chloroaniline) from the vapour phase (headspace) of urine samples. For the implementation of this plan, a needle trap device packed with the three-component adsorbent consisting of nano-Hydroxy Apatite (nHA), Zeolite (Ze), and Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) equipped with GC-FID was employed for the first phase. Examination of the prepared adsorbents was performed by FT-IR, PXRD, and FE-SEM techniques. The optimal value of considerable parameters such as time and temperature of extraction, salt content, and pH were established using the Response Surface Methodology-Central Composite Design (RMS-CCD) method. In this way, the optimal extraction of targeted analytes was accomplished in 41 min at 41 °C with NaCl content of 33.0% (w/v) and pH: 13.0, respectively. Also, the repeatability and reproducibility of the method were calculated to be in the range of 2.2-7.1% and 3.9-8.1%, respectively, which indicates the acceptable precision of the method. Also, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were determined in the range of 0.3-32.0 ng.L-1 and 0.8-350.0 ng.L-1, respectively, which proves the high sensitivity of the proposed method. Furthermore, the recovery percent of the extracted analytes was concluded in the range of 97.0-99.0% after 6 and 30 days of the sampling and storage at 25 °C and 4 °C, respectively. Finally, the designed procedure was employed in the analysis of the above-mentioned aromatic amines in the real urine samples. The achieved results illustrate that the three-component absorbent system (nHA;Ze;MOF@NTD) can be introduced as an efficient, fast-response, sensitive, and versatile procedure for trace analysis of the different aromatic amine compounds in public and occupational health.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite is a readily available, inexpensive, environmentally friendly adsorbent with high adsorption capacity. In this study, a polyaniline-doped nano-hydroxyapatite (PANI@HA) adsorbent was synthesized and employed in a needle trap device for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, phenanthrene, and benzo[a]pyrene for the first time. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. Initially, effective variables such as the carryover effect, storage time, accuracy, and precision of the method were examined in the laboratory. The desorption conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology and central composite design methods. From the standpoint of quantitative parameters, the limit of detection and limit of quantitation were determined to be between 0.001 and 0.003 and 0.021 and 0.051 ng mL-1, respectively, which indicates the high sensitivity of the proposed method. Additionally, no significant changes were detected after storage of analytes inside the needle at 4 °C after 60 days. The results of this study also provide a high correlation between the results of sampling with needles containing PANI@HA and with XAD-2 adsorbent tubes (standard NIOSH 5115 method) (R 2 = 0.98). Finally, the proposed method was successfully employed in the extraction and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in field (real) samples. In general, it can be concluded that a needle packed with PANI@HA is a reliable and high-performance method for sampling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to the NIOSH method.

Abstract
Non-enzymatic sensing has been in the research limelight, and most sensors based on nanomaterials are designed to detect single analytes. The simultaneous detection of analytes that together exist in biological organisms necessitates the development of effective and efficient non-enzymatic electrodes in sensing. In this regard, the development of sensing elements for detecting glucose and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is significant. Non-enzymatic sensing is more economical and has a longer lifetime than enzymatic electrochemical sensing, but it has several drawbacks, such as high working potential, slow electrode kinetics, poisoning from intermediate species and weak sensing parameters. We comprehensively review the recent developments in non-enzymatic glucose and H2O2 (NEGH) sensing by focusing mainly on the sensing performance, electro catalytic mechanism, morphology and design of electrode materials. Various types of nanomaterials with metal/metal oxides and hybrid metallic nanocomposites are discussed. A comparison of glucose and H2O2 sensing parameters using the same electrode materials is outlined to predict the efficient sensing performance of advanced nanomaterials. Recent innovative approaches to improve the NEGH sensitivity, selectivity and stability in real-time applications are critically discussed, which have not been sufficiently addressed in the previous reviews. Finally, the challenges, future trends, and prospects associated with advanced nanomaterials for NEGH sensing are considered. We believe this article will help to understand the selection of advanced materials for dual/multi non-enzymatic sensing issues and will also be beneficial for researchers to make breakthrough progress in the area of non-enzymatic sensing of dual/multi biomolecules.

Abstract
The saturation of nonenzymatic blood glucose sensors at lower than normal blood glucose levels has blocked their practical applications. The mechanistic understanding of the saturation, however, has long been under debate. Employing cyclic voltammetry, amperometry, and FTIR with various electrolytes of varying concentrations, we were able to uproot the saturation cause. It was found to be related to the hydroxide ion concentration, which must be 11 times greater than that of the glucose concentration, contrary to the prior understanding. Together with the satisfactory sensitivity at high pH, nonenzymatic blood glucose sensing has finally been achieved, eliminating the usual problem of electrochemical current saturation as well as the need for enzyme found in the present technology.

Abstract
In this work, porous NiMn2O4 nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (NiMn2O4 NSs@NF) was successfully fabricated by a simple hydrothermal step followed by a heat treatment. Porous NiMn2O4 NSs@NF is directly used as a sensor electrode for electrochemical detecting glucose. The NiMn2O4 nanosheet arrays are uniformly grown and packed on nickel foam to forming sensor electrode. The porous NiMn2O4 NSs@NF electrode not only provides the abundant accessible active sites and the effective ion-transport pathways, but also offers the efficient electron transport pathways for the electrochemical catalytic reaction by the high conductive nickel foam. This synergy effect endows porous NiMn2O4 NSs@NF with excellent electrochemical behaviors for glucose detection. The electrochemical measurements are used to investigate the performances of glucose detection. Porous NiMn2O4 NSs@NF for detecting glucose exhibits the high sensitivity of 12.2 mA mM−1 cm−2 at the window concentrations of 0.99–67.30 μM (correlation coefficient = 0.9982) and 12.3 mA mM−1 cm−2 at the window concentrations of 0.115–0.661 mM (correlation coefficient = 0.9908). In addition, porous NiMn2O4 NSs@NF also exhibits a fast response of 2 s and a low LOD of 0.24 µM. The combination of porous NiMn2O4 nanosheet arrays and nickel foam is a meaningful strategy to fabricate high performance non-enzymatic glucose sensor. These excellent properties reveal its potential application in the clinical detection of glucose.

Abstract
Multimodal nanoporous PtCu flowers (np-PtCu) were prepared via a two-step dealloying strategy under mild conditions. The np-PtCu alloy possesses an interconnected flower-like network skeleton with multiscale pore distribution. This material was placed on a glassy carbon electrode where it shows outstanding detection performance towards hydrogen peroxide and glucose in near-neutral pH solutions. It can be attributed to the specific structure in terms of interconnected nanoscaled ligaments, rich pore openings and a synergistic alloying effect. Figures of merit for detection H2O2 assay include (a) a working voltage of 0.7 V (vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode); (b) a wide linear response range (from 0.01 to 1.7 mM), and (c) a low detection limit (0.1 μM). The respective data for the glucose assay are (a) 0.4 V, (b) 0.01-2.0 mM, and (c) 0.1 μM. The method is not interfered in the presence of common concentrations of dopamine, acetaminophen and ascorbic acid. Graphical abstract Multimodal nanoporous (np) PtCu alloy was prepared via a two-step dealloying strategy under mild conditions. Np-PtCu exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity. The assay is highly sensitive, selective, and it allows for a long-term detection of H2O2 and glucose.
