Abstract
A promising method for additive manufacturing that makes it possible to produce intricate and personalized parts is selective laser melting (SLM). However, the mechanical properties of as-corroded SLM parts are still areas of concern. This research investigates the mechanical behavior of SLM parts that are exposed to a saline environment containing a 3.5% NaCl solution for varying lengths of time. The exposure times chosen for this study were 10 days, 20 days, and 30 days. The results reveal that the tensile strength of the parts is significantly affected by the duration of exposure. Additionally, the study also examined the influence of porosity on the corrosion behavior of the parts. The analysis included studying the mass loss of the parts over time, and a regression analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between exposure time and mass loss. In addition, the utilization of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo spectroscopy (XPS) techniques yielded valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms accountable for the observed corrosion and mechanical behavior. It was found that the presence of corrosion products (i.e., oxide layer) and pitting contributed to the degradation of the SLM parts in the saline environment. This research emphasizes the importance of considering part thickness in the design of SLM components for corrosive environments and provides insights for enhancing their performance and durability.

Abstract
Commercially available guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes often exhibit limited mechanical properties or bioactivity, leading to poor performance in repairing bone defects. To surmount this limitation, we developed a Janus structural composite membrane (Mg-MgO/PCL) reinforced by dual Mg (Mg sheets and MgO NPs) by using a combined processing technique involving casting and electrospinning. Results showed that the addition of Mg sheets and MgO NPs enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite membrane for osteogenic space maintenance, specifically tensile strength (from 10.2 ± 1.2 to 50.3 ± 4.5 MPa) and compression force (from 0 to 0.94 ± 0.09 N mm-1), through Mg sheet reinforcement and improved crystallization. The dense cast side of the Janus structure membrane displayed better fibroblast barrier capacity than a single fiber structure; meanwhile, the PCL matrix protected the Mg sheet from severe corrosion due to predeformation. The porous microfibers side supported preosteoblast cell adhesion, enhanced osteogenesis, and angiogenesis in vitro, through the biomimetic extracellular matrix and sustainable Mg2+ release. Furthermore, the Mg-MgO/PCL membrane incorporating 2 wt % MgO NPs exhibited remarkable antimicrobial properties, inducing over 88.75% apoptosis in Staphylococcus aureus. An in vivo experiment using the rat skull defect model (Φ = 5 mm) confirmed that the Mg-MgO/PCL membrane significantly improved new bone formation postsurgery. Collectively, our investigation provides valuable insights into the design of multifunctional membranes for clinical oral GBR application.

Evolution of Microstructure, Texture and Corrosion Properties of Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg Alloy Subjected to Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP). Symmetry (Basel) 2022. Abstract
In the selective laser melting process (SLM), the region irradiated by the laser beam is melted and quickly solidified, forming solidification lines (laser scan tracks) with symmetrical shapes. Because of the unique (rapid) crystallization conditions, the subgrain structures, typically observed inside these solidification lines, could also have variable geometric symmetrical patterns, e.g., cellular, pentagonal, or hexagonal cellular. The existence of such distinctive microstructures in SLM-made alloys has a significant impact on their superior mechanical and corrosion properties. Thus, any modification of this symmetrical microstructure (due to post-processing) can degrade or improve the properties of SLM-fabricated alloys. This study presents the experimental results on the effects of heat treatment and ECAP on microstructure modification and corrosion behavior of SLM-fabricated AlSi10Mg alloy. Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for microstructural analysis. The corrosion properties of the given samples were determined using open-circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. EBSD observations showed that the imposed strain resulted in an obvious reduction in grain size to ~1.42 µm and ~0.24 µm after the first and second ECAP passes, respectively. Electrochemical tests revealed that the corrosion resistance of the ECAP-processed AlSi10Mg alloy improved significantly, which was confirmed by a nobler Ecorr and lower Icorr values, and higher polarization resistance. The final results indicated that the strain-induced crystalline defects provided more nucleation sites for the formation of a denser and thicker oxide film, thus enhancing the corrosion resistance of the AlSi10Mg alloy.
