Low loading platinum dispersed on Ni/C nanoparticles as high active catalysts for urea electrooxidation reaction

Galvanostatic Electroshock Synthesis of Low Loading Au-Pt Nanoalloys Onto Gas Diffusion Electrodes as Multifunctional Electrocatalysts for a Glycerol-Fed Electrolyzer

Water electrolysis is increasingly considered a viable solution for meeting the world's growing energy demands and mitigating environmental issues. An inventive strategy to mitigate the energy requirements involves substituting the energy-intensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with biomass-derived glycerol electrooxidation. Nonetheless, the synthesis of electrocatalysts for controlling the selectivity towards added-value chemicals at the anode and efficient H2 generation at the cathode remains a critical bottleneck. Herein, we implemented a galvanostatic electroshock synthesis approach to control the reduction kinetics of Au(III) and Pt(IV) to grow ultra-low amount of gold-platinum alloys on a gas diffusion electrode (12-26 μgmetal cm-2) for glycerol-fed hydroxide anion exchange membrane based electrolyzer. The symmetric GDE-Au100-xPtx||GDE-Au100-xPtx systems showed a notable improvement in electrolyzer performance (GDE-Au64Pt36=201 mA cm-2) as compared to monometallic versions (GDE-Au100Pt0=18 mA cm-2, GDE-Au0Pt100=81 mA cm-2). Chromatography (HPLC) analysis underscores the critical importance of bulk electrolysis methodology (galvanostatic vs potentiostatic) for the efficient conversion of glycerol into high-value-added products. Regarding the electrical energy required to produce 1 kg of H2 for such an electrolyzer fed at the anode with glycerol, our results confirm a drastic decrease by a factor of at least two compared with conventional water electrolysis.

Bifunctional Al-Doped Cobalt Ferrocyanide Nanocube Array for Energy-Saving Hydrogen Production via Urea Electrolysis

The very slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) greatly limits the development of large-scale hydrogen production via water electrolysis. By replacing OER with an easier urea oxidation reaction (UOR), developing an HER/UOR coupling electrolysis system for hydrogen production could save a significant amount of energy and money. An Al-doped cobalt ferrocyanide (Al-Co2Fe(CN)6) nanocube array was in situ grown on nickel foam (Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF). Due to the unique nanocube array structure and regulated electronic structure of Al-Co2Fe(CN)6, the as-prepared Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF electrode exhibited outstanding catalytic activities and long-term stability to both UOR and HER. The Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF electrode needed potentials of 0.169 V and 1.118 V (vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode) to drive 10 mA cm-2 for HER and UOR, respectively, in alkaline conditions. Applying the Al-Co2Fe(CN)6/NF to a whole-urea electrolysis system, 10 mA cm-2 was achieved at a cell voltage of 1.357 V, which saved 11.2% electricity energy compared to that of traditional water splitting. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the boosted UOR activity comes from Co sites with Al-doped electronic environments. This promoted and balanced the adsorption/desorption of the main intermediates in the UOR process. This work indicates that Co-based materials as efficient catalysts have great prospects for application in urea electrolysis systems and are expected to achieve low-cost and energy-saving H2 production.

Controlled synthesis of ACo2O4 (A = Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni) as an environmentally friendly electrocatalyst for urea electrolysis

Water electrolysis is relatively an environmentally friendly hydrogen production technology, but due to the slow transfer of four electrons in the anodic oxidation reaction, it needs a theoretical voltage of up to 1.23 V. Therefore, in this experiment, a series of transition metal oxides, ACo₂O₄ (A = Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni), was synthesized on Ni foam current collectors by a hydrothermal and calcination method, and the material was applied in urea electrolysis to produce hydrogen. What is noteworthy is that the CuCo₂O₄ electrode has a unique flower-like nanoneedle structure, and has a larger electrochemical active area, more reactive active sites, and a faster charge transfer rate. In 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M urea solution, CuCo₂O₄ provides a potential of only 1.268 V at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 during the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), while in 1.0 M KOH solution, with the same current density, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is required to provide a potential of 1.53 V, indicating that the UOR can effectively replace the OER. Density functional theory calculations show that the CuCo₂O₄ material exhibits Gibbs free energy of the hydrogen closest to zero, thus promoting the electrochemistry performance of the electrode. In a cell composed of CuCo₂O₄//CuCo₂O₄, the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 can be achieved by providing a potential of only 1.509 V. This work offers a novel scheme for reducing energy consumption of the OER and improving catalytic performance of the UOR.

Effects of Platinum Nanoparticles on Rice Seedlings (Oryza sativa L.): Size-dependent Accumulation, Transformation, and Ionomic Influence

Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) are increasing in the environment largely due to their wide use and application in automobile and medical industries. The mechanism of uptake behavior of different-sized PtNPs and their association with PtNPs-induced phytotoxicity to plants remains unclear. The present study investigated PtNP uptake mechanisms and phytotoxicity simultaneously to further understand the accumulation and transformation dynamics. The uptake mechanisms were investigated by comparing the uptake and toxicological effects of three different-sized PtNPs (25, 50, and 70 nm) on rice seedlings across an experimental concentration gradient (0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L) during germination. The quantitative and qualitative results indicated that 70 nm-sized PtNPs were more efficiently transferred in rice roots. The increase in the PtNP concentration restricted the particle uptake. Particle aggregation was common in plant cells and tended to dissolve on root surfaces. Notably, the dissolution of small particles was simultaneous with the growth of larger particles after PtNPs entered the rice tissues. Ionomic results revealed that PtNP accumulation induced element homeostasis in the shoot ionome. We observed a significant positive correlation between the PtNP concentration and Fe and B accumulation in rice shoots. Compared to particle size, the exposure concentration of PtNPs had a stronger effect on the shoot ionomic response. Our study provides better understanding of the correlation of ionomic change and NP quantitative accumulation induced by PtNPs in rice seedlings.
