Beyond graphene: exploring the potential of MXene anodes for enhanced lithium-sulfur battery performance

The high theoretical energy density of Li-S batteries makes them a viable option for energy storage systems in the near future. Considering the challenges associated with sulfur's dielectric properties and the synthesis of soluble polysulfides during Li-S battery cycling, the exceptional ability of MXene materials to overcome these challenges has led to a recent surge in the usage of these materials as anodes in Li-S batteries. The methods for enhancing anode performance in Li-S batteries via the use of MXene interfaces are thoroughly investigated in this study. This study covers a wide range of techniques such as surface functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite structure design for enhancing MXene interfaces. Examining challenges and potential downsides of MXene-based anodes offers a thorough overview of the current state of the field. This review encompasses recent findings and provides a thorough analysis of advantages and disadvantages of adding MXene interfaces to improve anode performance to assist researchers and practitioners working in this field. This review contributes significantly to ongoing efforts for the development of reliable and effective energy storage solutions for the future.

MXene as Promising Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Comprehensive Review

Broad adoption has already been started of MXene materials in various energy storage technologies, such as super-capacitors and batteries, due to the increasing versatility of the preparation methods, as well as the ongoing discovery of new members. The essential requirements for an excellent anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are high safety, minimal volume expansion during the lithiation/de-lithiation process, high cyclic stability, and high Li+ storage capability. However, most of the anode materials for LIBs, such as graphite, SnO2, Si, Al, and Li4Ti5O12, have at least one issue. Hence, creating novel anode materials continues to be difficult. To date, a few MXenes have been investigated experimentally as anodes of LIBs due to their distinct active voltage windows, large power capabilities, and longer cyclic life. The objective of this review paper is to provide an overview of the synthesis and characterization characteristics of the MXenes as anode materials of LIBs, including their discharge/charge capacity, rate performance, and cycle ability. In addition, a summary of the potential outlook for developments of these materials as anodes is provided.

Roles of Metal Ions in MXene Synthesis, Processing and Applications: A Perspective

With a decade of effort, significant progress has been achieved in the synthesis, processing, and applications of MXenes. Metal ions play many crucial roles, such as in MXene delamination, structure regulation, surface modification, MXene composite construction, and even some unique applications. The different roles of metal ions are attributed to their many interactions with MXenes and the unique nature of MXenes, including their layered structure, surface chemistry, and the existence of multi-valent transition metals. Interactions with metal ions are crucial for the energy storage of MXene electrodes, especially in metal ion batteries and supercapacitors with neutral electrolytes. This review aims to provide a good understanding of the interactions between metal ions and MXenes, including the classification and fundamental chemistry of their interactions, in order to achieve their more effective utilization and rational design. It also provides new perspectives on MXene evolution and exfoliation, which may suggest optimized synthesis strategies. In this respect, the different effects of metal ions on MXene synthesis and processing are clarified, and the corresponding mechanisms are elaborated. Research progress on the roles metal ions have in MXene applications is also introduced.
