From waste high speed steel alloy to valuable oxygen evolution reaction catalyst in alkaline medium

Closed-loop recovery of molybdenum and value-added reuse of tungsten from alloy waste in additive manufacturing

As metal additive manufacturing (MAM) technology is booming in the aerospace sector, alternatives to the traditional production methods of metals such as mining, processing, and refining with severe emissions are urgently needed. This study proposed a closed-loop route for efficient recovery of molybdenum (Mo) and value-added reuse of tungsten (W) from Cr-Co-Ni-Mo-W alloy waste in MAM. The results showed that the leaching efficiency of Mo and W reached 99.3% and 99.9%, respectively, using the dual chemical-physical means of mixed-alkali roasting and leaching by microwave heating, while the discharge of waste liquor containing Cr6+ was reduced. Leaching kinetic studies revealed that the metal leaching process was controlled by chemical reaction mechanism. Moreover, the 10%N1923 (primary amine)-5%TRPO (tri-alkyl phosphine oxide)-kerosene extraction system exhibited a synergistic extraction effect on Mo and W. After purification, Mo was recovered as Mo powder for MAM. Simultaneously, the recovered product of W, MnWO4, was applied as a photocatalytic material with excellent degradation of methylene blue dye. Ultimately, the proposed method obtained recovery efficiencies of 98.4% and 99.3% for Mo and W, respectively, achieving efficient and environmentally-friendly reuse of these key metals.

Waste-Derived Catalysts for Water Electrolysis: Circular Economy-Driven Sustainable Green Hydrogen Energy

The sustainable production of green hydrogen via water electrolysis necessitates cost-effective electrocatalysts. By following the circular economy principle, the utilization of waste-derived catalysts significantly promotes the sustainable development of green hydrogen energy. Currently, diverse waste-derived catalysts have exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water electrolysis (OWE). Herein, we systematically examine recent achievements in waste-derived electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. The general principles of water electrolysis and design principles of efficient electrocatalysts are discussed, followed by the illustration of current strategies for transforming wastes into electrocatalysts. Then, applications of waste-derived catalysts (i.e., carbon-based catalysts, transitional metal-based catalysts, and carbon-based heterostructure catalysts) in HER, OER, and OWE are reviewed successively. An emphasis is put on correlating the catalysts' structure-performance relationship. Also, challenges and research directions in this booming field are finally highlighted. This review would provide useful insights into the design, synthesis, and applications of waste-derived electrocatalysts, and thus accelerate the development of the circular economy-driven green hydrogen energy scheme.

Surface Reconstruction of Co4N Coupled with CeO2 toward Enhanced Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Constructing the active interface in a heterojunction electrocatalyst is critical for the electron transfer and intermediate adsorption (O*, OH*, and HOO*) in alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) but still remains challenging. Herein, a CeO₂/Co₄N heterostructure is rationally synthesized through the direct calcination of Ce[Co(CN)₆], followed by thermal nitridation. The in situ electrochemically generated CoOOH on the surface of Co₄N serves as the active site for the OER, and the coupled CeO₂ with oxygen vacancy can optimize the energy barrier of intermediate reactions of the OER, which simultaneously boosts the OER performance. Besides, electrochemical measurement results demonstrate that oxygen vacancies in CeO₂ and optimized absorption free energy originating from the electron transfer between CeO₂ and CoOOH contribute to enhanced OER kinetics. This work provides new insight into regulating the interface heterostructure to rationally design efficient OER electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions.
