Changes in electrode resistances and limiting currents as a function of microbial electrolysis cell reactor configurations

A large cathode surface area promotes electromethanogenesis at a proper external voltage in a single coaxial microbial electrolysis cell

Microbial electrolysis cell coupled with anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) is currently encountering constraints on electromethanogenesis. The electrode configuration modification can be a simple yet efficient way to improve electromethanogenesis. This study evaluated two coaxial electrode configurations (large anode and small cathode: A₁₀C₁; small anode and large cathode: A₁C₁₀) using carbon felt as the electrode material. At an external voltage of 1.7 V, CH₄ content was found exclusively higher in A₁C₁₀ (11 % and 13 % higher for acetate-fed and cow manure-fed, respectively) than that of the control reactors. Consequently, CH₄ production was 13 % and 29 % higher in acetate-fed and CM-fed A₁C₁₀, respectively. The strengthened electromethanogenesis was attributed to the enrichment of interspecies hydrogen transfer microbes (i.e., Mesotoga and Bathyarchaeia). The coaxial configuration with a large cathode surface area demonstrated a viable stereotype in MEC-AD for improved waste treatment and energy recovery.

Impact of electrochemical reducing power on homoacetogenesis

Homoacetogenesis was performed in a microbial electrosynthesis single-chamber reactor at open and closed circuits modes. The aim is to investigate how an applied reducing power affects acetic acid synthesis and H₂ gas-liquid mass transfer. At a cathode voltage of -175 mV vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 NaCl), the acetic acid synthesis rate ramped up to 0.225 mmol L^-1h^-1 due to additional electrons and protons liberation from carbon-free sources such as water and ammonium via anodic oxidation. The study sets a new lowest benchmark that acetic acid can be bioelectrochemical synthesized at - 175 mV. The applied reducing power did not increase the H₂ gas-liquid mass transfer because the direct electron transfer from cathode to microorganisms reduced the demand for H₂ in the fermentation medium. Microbial analysis shows a high presence of Veillonellaceae spore-forming clostridia, which are identified as homoacetogens.

Vapor-Fed Cathode Microbial Electrolysis Cells with Closely Spaced Electrodes Enables Greatly Improved Performance

Hydrogen can be electrochemically produced in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) by current generated from bacterial anodes with a small added voltage. MECs typically use a liquid catholyte containing a buffer or salts. However, anions in these catholytes result in charge being balanced predominantly by ions other than hydroxide or protons, leading to anode acidification. To enhance only hydroxide ion transport to the anode, we developed a novel vapor-fed MEC configuration lacking a catholyte with closely spaced electrodes and an anion exchange membrane to limit the acidification. This MEC design produced a record-high sustained current density of 43.1 ± 0.6 A/m² and a H₂ production rate of 72 ± 2 LH₂/L-d (cell voltage of 0.79 ± 0.00 V). There was minimal impact on MEC performance of increased acetate concentrations, solution conductivity, or anolyte buffer capacity at applied voltages up to 1.1 V, as shown by a nearly constant internal resistance of only 6.8 ± 0.3 mΩ m². At applied external voltages >1.1 V, the buffer capacity impacted performance, with current densities increasing from 28.5 ± 0.6 A/m² (20 mM phosphate buffer solution (PBS)) to 51 ± 1 A/m² (100 mM PBS). These results show that a vapor-fed MEC can produce higher and more stable performance than liquid-fed cathodes by enhancing transport of hydroxide ions to the anode.
