High-index faceted Pt-Ru alloy concave nanocubes with enhancing ethanol and CO electro-oxidation

An acanthosphere-like PtRuRhPdAuIr high-entropy alloy as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes

An acanthosphere-like PtRuRhPdAuIr high-entropy alloy (HEA) was fabricated for the first time by the electrochemical method in a deep eutectic solvent. Owing to the HEA structure characteristics and the synergistic effect of multimetallic sites, the as-synthesized acanthosphere-like PtRuRhPdAuIr HEA exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes.

Electrocatalysis in deep eutectic solvents: from fundamental properties to applications

Electrocatalysis stands out as a promising avenue for synthesizing high-value products with minimal environmental footprint, aligning with the imperative for sustainable energy solutions. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), renowned for their eco-friendly, safe, and cost-effective nature, present myriad advantages, including extensive opportunities for material innovation and utilization as reaction media in electrocatalysis. This review initiates with an exposition on the distinctive features of DESs, progressing to explore their applications as solvents in electrocatalyst synthesis and electrocatalysis. Additionally, it offers an insightful analysis of the challenges and prospects inherent in electrocatalysis within DESs. By delving into these aspects comprehensively, this review aims to furnish a nuanced understanding of DESs, thus broadening their horizons in the realm of electrocatalysis and facilitating their expanded application.

The Synthesis of Carbon Black-Loaded Pt Concave Nanocubes with High-Index Facets and Their Enhanced Electrocatalytic Properties toward Glucose Oxidation

Catalysts with high catalytic activity and good stability are desirable in the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. Herein, Pt concave nanocubes with high-index facets (HIFs) supported by carbon black (Pt CNC/CB) are prepared through a hydrothermal method. The experimental results demonstrate that the peak current densities in different potential regions on the Pt CNC/CB anode are 0.22, 0.20, and 0.60 mA cm^-2. The catalytic process of the glucose oxidation reaction is investigated in electrolytes with different pH values. Better stability is achieved by Pt CNC/CB than by Pt concave nanocubes (Pt CNCs). Abundant surface defects with low-coordinated atom numbers, such as steps, kinks, and edges, served as active sites in the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. With the addition of carbon black, the catalytic activity can be improved by facilitating the full exposure of the active surface defects on the HIFs of the Pt CNCs. Moreover, to address the aggregation of Pt CNCs, caused by the high surface energy of HIFs, the introduction of carbon material is an effective way to preserve the HIFs and thus enhance the stability of the catalyst. Hence, the prepared Pt CNC/CB electrocatalyst has great potential to be applied in the electrooxidation of glucose.

A highly stable and sensitive ethanol sensor based on Ru-decorated 1D WO3 nanowires

Decorating materials with noble metal catalysts is an effective method for optimizing the sensing performance of sensors based on tungsten trioxide (WO₃) nanowires. Ruthenium (Ru) exhibits excellent catalytic activity for oxygen adsorption/desorption and chemical reactions between gases and adsorbed oxygen. Herein, small Ru nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of one-dimensional WO₃ nanowires. The nanowires were prepared by the electrospinning method through an ultraviolet (UV) irradiation process, and decoration with Ru did not change their morphology. A sensor based on 4% Ru nanowires (NWs) shows the highest response (∼120) to 100 ppm ethanol, which was increased around 47 times, and the lowest ethanol detection limit (221 ppb) at a lower temperature (200 °C) displays outstanding repeatability and stability even after 45 days or in higher-humidity conditions. Moreover, it also has faster response–recovery features. The improvement in the sensing performance was attributed to the stable morphology of the nanowires, the sensitization effect of Ru, the catalytic effect of RuO₂ and the optimal atomic utilization efficiency. This work offers an effective and promising strategy for promoting the ethanol sensing performance of WO₃.

Decorating Ru does not effect the morphology of NWs, increased the oxygen vacancies, adsorbed oxygen. This strategy results in a better sensing performance (∼120 to 100 ppm ethanol was increased around 47 times at 200 °C) and humidity resistance.
