Investigating electrochemical corrosion at Mg alloy-steel joint interface using scanning electrochemical cell impedance microscopy (SECCIM)

Developing strategies to prevent corrosion at the interface of dissimilar metal alloys is challenging because of the presence of heterogenous distribution of galvanic couples and microstructural features that significantly change the corrosion rate. Devising strategies to mitigate this interfacial corrosion requires quantitative and correlative understanding of its surface electrochemical reaction. In this work, scanning electrochemical cell impedance microscopy (SECCIM) was employed to study location-specific corrosion in the interfacial region of dissimilar alloys, such as AZ31 (magnesium alloy) and DP590 (steel) welded using the Friction-stir Assisted Scribe Technique (FAST) processes. Herein, SECCM and SECCIM were used to perform correlative mapping of the local electrochemical impedance spectroscopic and potentiodynamic polarization to measure the effect of electronic and microstructural changes in the welded interfacial region on corrosion kinetics. Microstructural characterization including scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction was performed to correlate changes in microstructural features and chemistry with the corresponding electronic properties that affect corrosion behavior. The variations in corrosion potential, corrosion current density, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy behavior across the interface provide deeper insights on the interfacial region-which is chemically and microstructurally distinct from both bare AZ31 and DP590 that can help prevent corrosion in dissimilar metal structures.

One-Step Synthesis of a Binder-Free, Stable, and High-Performance Electrode; Cu-O|Cu3P Heterostructure for the Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation Reaction (MOR)

Although direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have been spotlighted in the past decade, their commercialization has been hampered by the poor efficiency of the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) due to the unsatisfactory performance of currently available electrocatalysts. Herein, we developed a binder-free, copper-based, self-supported electrode consisting of a heterostructure of Cu₃P and mixed copper oxides, i.e., cuprous-cupric oxide (Cu-O), as a high-performance catalyst for the electro-oxidation of methanol. We synthesized a self-supported electrode composed of Cu-O|Cu₃P using a two-furnace atmospheric pressure-chemical vapor deposition (AP-CVD) process. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed the formation of 3D nanocrystals with defects and pores. Cu-O|Cu₃P outperformed the MOR activity of individual Cu₃P and Cu-O owing to the synergistic interaction between them. Cu₃P|Cu-O exhibited a highest anodic current density of 232.5 mAcm^-2 at the low potential of 0.65 V vs. Hg/HgO, which is impressive and superior to the electrocatalytic activity of its individual counterparts. The formation of defects, 3D morphology, and the synergistic effect between Cu₃P and Cu-O play a crucial role in facilitating the electron transport between electrode and electrolyte to obtain the optimal MOR activity. Cu-O|Cu₃P shows outstanding MOR stability for about 3600 s with 100% retention of the current density, which proves its robustness alongside CO intermediate.

Electrochemical Evaluation of Protective Coatings with Ti Additions on Mild Steel Substrate with Potential Application for PEM Fuel Cells

In this work, the corrosion behavior of NiCr(Ti) protective coatings deposited on mild steel substrates through laser cladding technology is studied as an alternative new material for metallic bipolar plates used in PEMFC applications. For electrochemical testing, a solution consisting of 0.5 M H₂SO₄ + 2 ppm F⁻ at room temperature is used as an electrolyte. The fluoride ions are added to simulate the conditions in the PEM fuel cell due to degradation of the proton exchange membrane and fluoride release. A saturated calomel electrode (SCE) is used as a reference electrode and a platinum mesh as the counter electrode. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM) are used for studying the morphology of the protective coatings and the effect of Ti addition. The electrochemical evaluation consisted of measuring the open circuit potential (OCP), followed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. It is found that the coatings with 5% Ti, 7% Ti and 10% Ti addition comply with the conditions of the US DOE regarding corrosion performance to be used as materials for the manufacture of the bipolar plates.
