An Evidence-Based Measure to Assess Self-Efficacy Among Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Jordan

PURPOSE

The purpose of the study was to assess self-efficacy among adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and to identify its contributing factors using a new measure based on the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Guidelines: the Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Self-Efficacy Scale (T1DM-SES).

METHOD

A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 161 adolescents ages between 12 and 18 via an online questionnaire survey, including demographic and management-related variables and the 21 items of T1DM-SES.

RESULTS

Results demonstrated that adolescents had high self-efficacy levels regarding the basic needs to manage their diabetes and relatively moderate and low levels regarding more sophisticated needs, such as adjusting insulin dose to correct fluctuated glucose levels, covering carbohydrates, and managing ketoacidosis at home. Adolescent females and adolescents who have working mothers or caregivers demonstrated higher levels of self-efficacy, whereas adolescents who have another family member with T1DM reported lower levels.

CONCLUSION

Assessing adolescents' self-efficacy using evidence-based measures is crucial for informing health education plans. There should be a greater focus on acquiring the advanced knowledge and skills necessary for adolescents to manage the constantly evolving challenges of diabetes management. Access to health care and sufficient health insurance coverage that encompasses modern technology are fundamental for the effective management of T1DM.

Robust stability control for nonlinear time varying delay fractional order practical systems and application in Glucose-Insulin system

Diabetes Mellitus is a long-term and prevalent disease that 10% of the world population suffer ‎from. This study uses a state feedback controller to control blood glucose level in the delayed ‎fractional order model of this disease. Thus, first, a proper state feedback controller for ‎stabilizing the fractional order model with time-variant delays is presented. Then, stability and ‎stabilization of the fractional order models in the fractional order insulin-glucose model with ‎time-variant delays is presented. The results show that the insulin-glucose system with the ‎proposed controller is stabilized and the blood glucose concentration is controlled in a proper ‎time. Further studies might provide the opportunity for novel technologies in controlling and ‎treating diabetic patients.

A review of biomarkers in the context of type 1 diabetes: Biological sensing for enhanced glucose control

As wearable healthcare monitoring systems advance, there is immense potential for biological sensing to enhance the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The aim of this work is to describe the ongoing development of biomarker analytes in the context of T1D. Technological advances in transdermal biosensing offer remarkable opportunities to move from research laboratories to clinical point-of-care applications. In this review, a range of analytes, including glucose, insulin, glucagon, cortisol, lactate, epinephrine, and alcohol, as well as ketones such as beta-hydroxybutyrate, will be evaluated to determine the current status and research direction of those analytes specifically relevant to T1D management, using both in-vitro and on-body detection. Understanding state-of-the-art developments in biosensing technologies will aid in bridging the gap from bench-to-clinic T1D analyte measurement advancement.

Blood glucose regulation and control of insulin and glucagon infusion using single model predictive control for type 1 diabetes mellitus

This study elaborates on the design of artificial pancreas using model predictive control algorithm for a comprehensive physiological model such as the Sorensen model, which regulates the blood glucose and can have a longer control time in normal glycaemic region. The main objective of the proposed algorithm is to eliminate the risk of hyper and hypoglycaemia and have a precise infusion of hormones: insulin and glucagon. A single model predictive controller is developed to control the bihormones, insulin, and glucagon for such a development unmeasured disturbance is considered for a random time. The simulation result for the proposed algorithm performed good regulation lowering the hypoglycaemia risk and maintaining the glucose level within the normal glycaemic range. To validate the performance of the tracking of output and setpoint, average tracking error is used and 4.4 mg/dl results are obtained while compared with standard value (14.3 mg/dl).
