Olivine Dissolution in Seawater: Implications for CO2 Sequestration through Enhanced Weathering in Coastal Environments

Enhanced weathering of (ultra)basic silicate rocks such as olivine-rich dunite has been proposed as a large-scale climate engineering approach. When implemented in coastal environments, olivine weathering is expected to increase seawater alkalinity, thus resulting in additional CO₂ uptake from the atmosphere. However, the mechanisms of marine olivine weathering and its effect on seawater-carbonate chemistry remain poorly understood. Here, we present results from batch reaction experiments, in which forsteritic olivine was subjected to rotational agitation in different seawater media for periods of days to months. Olivine dissolution caused a significant increase in alkalinity of the seawater with a consequent DIC increase due to CO₂ invasion, thus confirming viability of the basic concept of enhanced silicate weathering. However, our experiments also identified several important challenges with respect to the detailed quantification of the CO₂ sequestration efficiency under field conditions, which include nonstoichiometric dissolution, potential pore water saturation in the seabed, and the potential occurrence of secondary reactions. Before enhanced weathering of olivine in coastal environments can be considered an option for realizing negative CO₂ emissions for climate mitigation purposes, these aspects need further experimental assessment.

Tissue-specific assimilation, depuration and toxicity of nickel in Mytilus edulis

The tissue-specific accumulation and time-dependent depuration of radioactive (63)Ni by the byssus, gut, foot, gills, kidney, adductor muscle and faeces of Mytilus edulis has been investigated using a pulse-chase technique. The rate and extent of depuration of (63)Ni varied between tissues and, after 168 h, the concentration factors and assimilation efficiencies ranged from 1 to 35 L kg(-1) and 5%-13%, respectively. Mussels were also exposed to a range of environmentally-realistic concentrations of dissolved Ni, prior to the analysis of biological endpoints. The clearance rate was concentration-dependent and at the highest concentration decreased by 30%. Neutral red retention (NRR) assays indicated a cytotoxic response and DNA strand breaks were observed in the haemocytes. The association of DNA damage with that of physiological and cytotoxic effects suggests that Ni exerts a significant impact on Mytilus edulis at cellular and genetic levels.

Metal sources to the Baltic clam Macoma balthica (Mollusca: Bivalvia) in the southern Baltic Sea (the Gulf of Gdansk)

Metal concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in an infaunal facultative deposit-feeding bivalve, the Baltic clam Macoma balthica, in the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic Sea) were assessed and compared to selected concentrations of metals in the environment. Between October 1996 and September 1997, dissolved and easy extractable (by 1M HCl) metal fractions of total suspended particulate matter (TPM) in the overlying water and of surficial sediments (<63 microm) were measured monthly at five sublittoral sites in the Gulf of Gdansk, and accumulated tissue metal concentrations in M. balthica were determined simultaneously. The study highlights the importance of sediment geochemistry as a factor modifying ambient trace metal bioavailabilities. Surficial sediments appeared to contribute most to the accumulation of Cu and Pb in M. balthica, reflecting the high metal availability in the Gulf. Assimilation of Cu from sediments is controlled by Mn components possibly through an inhibitory effect of Mn oxyhydroxides, while Pb accumulation from sediments depends on the organic content of the sediment. A dual metal uptake pathway, with a suspended particulate-bound fraction and surficial sediments, was apparent for Mn and Zn. Partitioning of Mn in sediments was related to the concentration of labile Fe, with increased levels of Fe tending to inhibit the accumulation of Mn by the clam. Tissue accumulated Zn might have been altered by the clam's internal regulation, making Zn tissue concentrations, to some degree, independent of its environmental level. The principal source of Ni accumulated by the clams exists in the soluble phase.

Nickel bioaccumulation in bivalves from the New Caledonia lagoon: seawater and food exposure

The New Caledonian lagoon is submitted to intense heavy metal input from land-based Ni mining. Therefore, the use of sentinel species is strongly recommended in order to develop and implement coastal zone management programmes of the metal contamination. The tropical oysters Isognomon isognomon and Malleus regula and the clam Gafrarium tumidum were previously proposed as such possible sentinel organisms and were thus investigated in this context. The three species were exposed to Ni via seawater or food using radiotracer techniques. Results indicate that uptake and retention efficiencies of Ni are independent of the dissolved Ni concentrations in the surrounding seawater. Hence, for the three species, body concentrations of Ni taken up from the dissolved phase are directly proportional to the ambient dissolved concentrations. Biokinetic patterns indicated that the major part of Ni was rapidly lost from bivalves during the first days of depuration, whereas 7 to 47% of 63Ni were retained in tissues with a biological half-life not significantly different from infinity. Finally, feeding experiments showed that Ni ingested with food (phytoplankton) was assimilated more efficiently in clams (assimilation efficiency, AE = 61%) than in oysters (AE = 17%), and was strongly retained (T(b1/2) > or = 35 d) in the tissues of both bivalves. It is concluded that the investigated species examined are efficient bioaccumulators of Ni from both the surrounding seawater and the food, and that they would be useful bioindicators for monitoring the status of Ni contamination in tropical coastal waters.
