Management of oil spill contamination in the Gulf of Patras caused by an accidental subsea blowout

Modeling the Agia Zoni II tanker oil spill in Saronic Gulf, Greece

We employed GNOME to simulate the oil spill due to the sinking of the tanker "Agia Zoni ΙΙ" in September 2017 in Saronic Gulf. We performed simulations using various combinations of wind and current input, and values of the GNOME parameters, and compared the simulated oil spill trajectories with coastal pollution and satellite data. The best scenario, i.e., the combination that showed the most satisfactory agreement with field data, uses wind data from one of the closest meteorological stations, calculated currents by a hydrodynamic model and default values of the parameters, except for the windage and the refloat half-life whose proposed values are 3-4 % and 6 h, respectively. Neglecting the effect of the wind in the best scenario worsened the agreement. Mass balance results depicted that approximately 47 % of the total 500 tons of the oil spill ended up on the coastline of Attica peninsula and Salamina Island.

Screening and validation of new diagnostic ratios of dibenzothiophenes and fluorenes for identification of seriously weathered oil spills

Fingerprinting technique is a universal method for tracing oil spill. It is usually achieved by means of diagnostic ratios (DRs) of biomarkers. In the process of severely weathering, the important components usually change greatly and the relevant diagnostic ratios may also change. Therefore, it is more difficult to trace severely weathered oil to its source. On 22 November 2013, the huge explosion of Sinopec pipeline occurred in Qingdao, China. The beaches near the explosion site were contaminated and damaged by oil spills. After the explosion, an actual weathering experiment was carried out on an oil-polluted beach. The original and weathered spilled oil samples have been collected from this site. Synchronized with actual coastal weathering, a 360-day Lab simulated weathering experiment was carried out using the sampled original oil spill samples. According to data analysis techniques including similarity, t-test method and repeatability limit analysis, 27 new diagnostic ratios of dibenzothiophenes and fluorenes in the weathered oil samples were selected and verified. 6 of them maintained good stability during both of the simulated and actual weathering process. It is recommended that these stable DRs be used for tracing the source of severely weathered oil spills to promote the efficiency and accuracy.

Gene expression profiles of putative biomarkers in juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

There is evidence that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are consistently the predominant organic contaminants in concentration found in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from the North and Central Adriatic Sea. Hence this study investigates the PAH toxicity to loggerheads by using a particular set of genes [i.e. CYP1B, CAT, GPX, GSTT1, SOD3, DNMT1, Epoxide hydrolase 1 (EPHX1), Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1), Lamin-A/C isoform 3 (LMNA), Talin 1 (TLN1), Annexin A1 (ANXA1)] whose altered expression is potentially dependent on and specific for the PAH-related mechanism of action. Twenty healthy juvenile loggerheads were thus divided into high and low exposure groups (mean of ΣPAHs: 80.34 ng mL^-1 vs. 8.84 ng mL^-1, P < 0.0001) according to the median split of ΣPAHs. Interestingly, we found that the whole blood mRNA levels of each gene biomarker tested were significantly increased in high PAH-exposed turtles thus proving to be useful for the biological monitoring of PAH toxicity and hematotoxicity in sea turtles.
