Air pollution control efficacy and health impacts: A global observational study from 2000 to 2016

Visualization and Analysis of Urban Air Quality Management Using Bibliometric Techniques and Social Network Analysis for the Period 1975 to 2022: A Review

This study uses bibliometric techniques and social network analysis to evaluate 318 publications on air quality management in cities worldwide. The relevant data were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using the VOSviewer 1.6.7 tools. The analysis included the number of publications, citation analyses, research study area analyses, and the most common keywords from 1975 to November 6, 2022. In addition, based on the results of the cluster analysis, we developed co-occurrence networks that enable a more specific keyword classification. The visualization showed the existing relationships between key terms, research study areas, and publications dealing with air quality management in cities. China, the United States, and the United Kingdom led in terms of the number of scientific publications and overall strength of connections during the study period. The most productive journal was Science of the Total Environment, followed by Atmospheric Environment, and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Several limitations of the study are described and recommendations are made for future studies to increase the scope of studies and facilitate urban air quality management.

Independent and interaction effects of prenatal exposure to high AQI and extreme Humidex on the risk of preterm birth: A large sample population study in northern China

The combined effects of air pollution and extreme temperature on PTB remain unclear. To evaluate the independent effect and interaction effect of prenatal extreme exposure to air quality index (AQI) and Humidex, on PTB. Based on the National Health Care Data Platform of Shandong University, women who gave birth in 2019-2020 were selected for the study. First, the independent effects of AQI and Humidex on PTB were assessed by logistic regression model. Subsequently, the interaction effects of AQI and Humidex on PTB were estimated separately by calculation of the relative excess risk of interaction (RERI). A total of 34365 pregnant women were included and 1975 subjects were diagnosed with PTB. We observed a significant increase in the odds of PTB associated with maternal high AQI exposure, with an OR of 1.70 (95% CI: 1.59, 1.81). Similarly, extreme exposure to Humidex also demonstrated an elevated PTB odds, with a low Humidex OR of 2.48 (95% CI: 2.23, 2.76) and a high Humidex OR of 1.48 (95% CI: 1.31, 1.67). Finally, we observed an interaction between high AQI and extreme Humidex during the 1st trimester. Interaction effects were noted between high AQI and low Humidex throughout the entire trimester and the 2nd trimester. This study suggests that prenatal exposure to high AQI and extreme Humidex could increase the odds of PTB, with effects exhibiting the sensitivity window and a cumulative trend. Additionally, there is an interaction between AQI and Humidex.

Association between PM2.5 and hypertension among the floating population in China: a cross-sectional study

Few studies have investigated the association between PM2.5 and hypertension among floating populations. We therefore examined the relationship using binary logistic regression. Each grade of increment in the annual average PM2.5 (grade one: ≤15 µg/m3; grade two: 15-25 µg/m3; grade three: 25-35 µg/m3 [Excluding 25]; grade four: ≥35 µg/m3) was associated with an increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR] = 1.081, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.034-1.129). Among the female floating population (OR = 1.114, 95% CI: 1.030-1.204), those with education level of primary school and below (OR = 1.140, 95% CI: 1.058-1.229), construction workers (OR = 1.228, 95% CI: 1.058-1.426), and those living in the eastern region of China (OR = 1.241, 95% CI: 1.145-1.346) were more vulnerable to PM2.5. These results indicate that PM2.5 is positively associated with hypertension in floating populations. Floating populations who are female, less educated, construction workers, and living in the eastern region of China are more vulnerable to the adverse impacts of PM2.5.

Associations between short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 and incident cases of cardiovascular disease in Yantai, China

There are limited studies investigating the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) cases in China. This study aims to examine the short-term effects of PM2.5 on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. A combination of Poisson-distribution generalized linear model and distributed lag non-linear model was used to examine the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 and incident cases of CVD. The results revealed that per 10 µg/m3 increment of PM2.5 would increase the incident CVD cases by 0.147% (Relative Risk: 1.00147, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.00008-1.00286) at a lag of 2 days. The stratified analyses showed higher effects risk in females, older residents (aged 60-75 years), and acute myocardial infarction group (p-value for difference <0.05). This study indicates that short-term exposure to PM2.5 may increase the risk of CVD and highlights the necessity for a higher air quality standard in Yantai, China.

Ambient fine particulate matter and pregnancy outcomes: An umbrella review

The available evidence on the effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and pregnancy outcomes (birth outcomes and pregnancy complications) has increased substantially. The purpose of this umbrella review is to refine the evidence of the association between birth outcome (birth defects) and PM2.5; and summarize the credibility of existing research on the association between pregnancy complications and PM2.5. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases for relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses up to March 16, 2022 in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Two independent investigators conducted data extraction. AMSTAR 2 and GRADE assessment criteria were used to evaluate the methodological and evidence quality. We performed subgroup analyses by trimesters of pregnancy. The review protocol for this study has been registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022325550). This umbrella review identified a total of 41 systematic reviews, including 28 articles evaluating the influence of PM2.5 on birth outcomes and 13 on pregnancy complications. Positive associations between perinatal PM2.5 exposure and adverse birth outcomes were found, including low birth weight, preterm birth, stillbirth, small for gestational age, and birth defects. Pregnant women exposed to PM2.5 had a significantly higher risk of developing hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hypertension, and preeclampsia. The findings of subgroup analysis demonstrated that the effects of ambient PM2.5 exposure on pregnancy outcomes varied by trimesters. The findings of this extensive umbrella review provide convincing proof that exposure to ambient PM2.5 raises the risks of unfavorable birth outcomes and pregnancy complications. Some associations show considerable disparity between trimesters. These findings have implications for strengthen perinatal health care on air pollution and improving intergenerational equity.

The interaction effects between exposure to ambient PM2.5 and economic development on the settlement intention for floating population in China

Limited studies examined the interaction effects between exposure to ambient PM_2.5 and economic development on the settlement intention of floating population. We used binary logistic model to examine the association of PM_2.5, per capita GDP (PGDP), PM_2.5 [Formula: see text] PGDP on the settlement intention. Additive interaction term of PM_2.5 and PGDP level was used to investigate their interactive effects. Overall, each one grade increment in annual average PM_2.5 was associated with decreased probability of settlement intention (OR = 0.847, 95%CI: 0.811-0.885). The interaction effect between PM_2.5 and PGDP on settlement intention was significant (OR = 1.168, 95%CI: 1.142-1.194). The stratified analysis showed PM_2.5 exhibits lower settlement intention in the aged 55 years or above, engaged in low-skilled works, and living in the western China. This study indicates that PM_2.5-exposed will decrease the settlement intention of floating population. High economic development level can weaken the relationship between PM_2.5 and settlement intention. Policymakers should balance the socio-economic development and environmental health and focus on vulnerable population.

Housing Supply and How It Is Related to Social Inequalities-Air Pollution, Green Spaces, Crime Levels, and Poor Areas-In Catalonia

We carried out a search of over 12,000 houses offered on the rental market in Catalonia and assessed the possibility of families below the poverty threshold being able to rent these homes. In this regard, we wanted to evaluate whether the economic situation of families is able to influence their social environment, surroundings, and safety. We observed how their economic situation can allow families the possibility of developing a life without exposure to health risks, and how economic constraints result in disadvantages in several areas of life. The results show how families at risk of poverty live in less favourable conditions and experience a widening of different gaps, with current prices leading to a possible poverty trap for the most disadvantaged groups. The higher the percentage of the population below the threshold, the lower the possibility of not being able to rent a house compared to areas with a lower prevalence of population below the threshold. This association was observed both when considering the risk linearly and non-linearly. Linearly, the probability of not renting a house was reduced by 8.36% for each 1% increase in the prevalence of population at risk of extreme poverty. In the second, third and fourth percentage quartiles, the probability of not being able to rent a house decreased by 21.13%, 48.61%, and 57.79%, respectively. In addition, the effect was different inside and outside of metropolitan areas, with the former showing a decrease of 19.05% in the probability of renting a house, whereas outside metropolitan areas the probability increased by 5.70%.

Association between exposure to ambient PM2.5 and the health status in the mobile population from 338 cities in China

There are limited studies investigating the relationship between exposure to PM_2.5 and the health status among the mobile population. A cross-sectional analysis was performed in a nationally representative sample (2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey data) consisting of 169,469 mobile population. The ordered logistic regression model was used to examine the association between PM_2.5 and the health status in mobile population. Stratified analyses were performed to identify whether the association varied across gender, age group, and regions in China. Overall, every 10 μg/m³ increment in annual average PM_2.5 was associated with increased risk of poor self-reported health (OR = 1.021, 95% CI: 1.012-1.030). Mobile population aged 31-49 years and living in the central region suffers the highest PM_2.5-associated health risk (OR = 1.030, 95% CI: 1.019-1.042; OR = 1.095, 95% CI: 1.075-1.116). Our study suggests that PM_2.5 exposure was associated with an increased risk of poor self-reported health in mobile population, particularly among the population aged 31-49 years and people living in the central region of China. Policymakers should pay more attention to the vulnerable mobile population to tackle the health burden of ambient air pollution.

Associations between short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 and incident cases of cerebrovascular disease in Yantai, China

There are limited studies examining the association between PM_2.5 exposure and incident cerebrovascular disease (CD) cases in China. In this study, daily counts of incident CD cases and daily PM_2.5 concentrations were obtained in Yantai, Shandong Province, China from 2014 to 2019. We used a combination of the Poisson-distribution generalized linear model (GLM) and a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to examine the association of short-term exposure to ambient PM_2.5 and incident cases of CD. The results revealed that for every 10 μg/m³ increment of PM_2.5 would increase the incident CD cases by 0.216% (RR:1.00216, 95%CI:1.0016-1.0028) at lag4. The stratified analysis demonstrated that the females and residents aged 65 years or above presented higher short-term PM_2.5-associated CD risks than the males and aged below 65 years. Targeted prevention strategies should be adopted to reduce the PM_2.5-related CD burden, especially for the susceptible population in China.

Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution and adverse birth outcomes: An umbrella review of 36 systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses linked prenatal exposure to ambient air pollutants to adverse birth outcomes with mixed findings, including results indicating positive, negative, and null associations across the pregnancy periods. The objective of this study was to systematically summarise systematic reviews and meta-analyses on air pollutants and birth outcomes to assess the overall epidemiological evidence. Systematic reviews with/without meta-analyses on the association between air pollutants (NO₂, CO, O₃, SO₂, PM_2.5, and PM₁₀) and birth outcomes (preterm birth; stillbirth; spontaneous abortion; birth weight; low birth weight, LBW; small-for-gestational-age) up to March 30, 2022 were included. We searched PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Medline, Embase, and the Web of Science Core Collection, systematic reviews repositories, grey literature databases, internet search engines, and references of included studies. The consistency in the directions of the effect estimates was classified as more consistent positive or negative, less consistent positive or negative, unclear, and consistently null. Next, the confidence in the direction was rated as either convincing, probable, limited-suggestive, or limited non-conclusive evidence. Final synthesis included 36 systematic reviews (21 with and 15 without meta-analyses) that contained 295 distinct primary studies. PM_2.5 showed more consistent positive associations than other pollutants. The positive exposure-outcome associations based on the entire pregnancy period were more consistent than trimester-specific exposure averages. For whole pregnancy exposure, a more consistent positive association was found for PM_2.5 and birth weight reductions, particulate matter and spontaneous abortion, and SO₂ and LBW. Other exposure-outcome associations mostly showed less consistent positive associations and few unclear directions of associations. Almost all associations showed probable evidence. The available evidence indicates plausible causal effects of criteria air pollutants on birth outcomes. To strengthen the evidence, more high-quality studies are required, particularly from understudied settings, such as low-and-middle-income countries. However, the current evidence may warrant the adoption of the precautionary principle.

Determining the effect of air quality on activities of daily living disability: using tracking survey data from 122 cities in China

Background

Current research on activities of daily living (ADLs) disability has mostly focused on the analysis of demographic characteristics, while research on the microcharacteristics of individuals and the macroenvironment is relatively limited, and these studies solely concern the impact of air quality on individual health.

Methods

This study innovatively investigated the impact of air quality on ADL disability by matching micro data of individuals from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study with data of urban environmental quality from 122 cities. In this study, an ordered panel logit model was adopted for the benchmark test, and the two-stage ordered probit model with IV was used for endogenous treatment.

Results

This innovative study investigated the impact of air quality on ADL disability by matching individual micro data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study with urban environmental quality data for 122 cities. The results showed that air quality significantly increased the probability of ADL disability. The positive and marginal effect of air quality on moderate and mild disability was higher. Generally, the marginal effect of air quality on residents’ health was negative. In terms of group heterogeneity, the ADL disability of individuals aged over 60 years, those in the high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) group, females, and those in the nonpilot long-term care insurance group was more affected by air quality, and the interaction between air quality and serious illness showed that the deterioration of air quality exacerbated the ADL disability caused by serious illness; that is, the moderating effect was significant.

Conclusions

According to the equilibrium condition of the individual health production function, the ADL disability caused by a 1% improvement in air quality is equivalent to the ADL disability caused by an 89.9652% reduction in serious illness, indicating that the effect of improved air quality is difficult to replace by any other method. Therefore, good air quality can not only reduce ADL disability directly but also reduce serious illness indirectly, which is equivalent to the reduction of ADL disability. This is called the health impact.

Spatio-Temporal Evolution and Spatial Heterogeneity of Influencing Factors of SO2 Emissions in Chinese Cities: Fresh Evidence from MGWR

In this study, based on the multi-source nature and humanities data of 270 Chinese cities from 2007 to2018, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of SO2 emissions are revealed by using Moran’s I, a hot spot analysis, kernel density, and standard deviation ellipse models. The spatial scale heterogeneity of influencing factors is explored by using the multiscale geographically weighted regression model to make the regression results more accurate and reliable. The results show that (1) SO2 emissions showed spatial clustering characteristics during the study period, decreased by 85.12% through pollution governance, and exhibited spatial heterogeneity of differentiation. (2) The spatial distribution direction of SO2 emissions’ standard deviation ellipse in cities was “northeast–southwest”. The gravity center of the SO2 emissions shifted to the northeast, from Zhumadian City to Zhoukou City in Henan Province. The results of hot spots showed a polarization trend of “clustering hot spots in the north and dispersing cold spots in the south”. (3) The MGWR model is more accurate than the OLS and classical GWR regressions. The different spatial bandwidths have a different effect on the identification of influencing factors. There were several main influencing factors on urban SO2 emissions: the regional innovation and entrepreneurship level, government intervention, and urban precipitation; important factors: population intensity, financial development, and foreign direct investment; secondary factors: industrial structure upgrading and road construction. Based on the above conclusions, this paper explores the spatial heterogeneity of urban SO2 emissions and their influencing factors, and provides empirical evidence and reference for the precise management of SO2 emission reduction in “one city, one policy”.
