Degradation of phenanthrene by consortium 5H under hypersaline conditions

Enhanced degradation of enrofloxacin in mariculture wastewater based on marine bacteria and microbial carrier

This study aimed to isolate marine bacteria to investigate their stress response, inhibition mechanisms, and degradation processes under high-load conditions of salinity and enrofloxacin (ENR). The results demonstrated that marine bacteria exhibited efficient pollutant removal efficiency even under high ENR stress (up to 10 mg/L), with chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN) and ENR removal efficiencies reaching approximately 88%, 83%, 61%, and 73%, respectively. The predominant families of marine bacteria were Bacillaceae (50.46%), Alcanivoracaceae (32.30%), and Rhodobacteraceae (13.36%). They responded to ENR removal by altering cell membrane properties, stimulating the activity of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes and antioxidant systems, and mitigating ENR stress through the secretion of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). The marine bacteria exhibited robust adaptability to environmental factors and effective detoxification of ENR, simultaneously removing carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and antibiotics from the wastewater. The attapulgite carrier enhanced the bacteria's resistance to the environment. When treating actual mariculture wastewater, the removal efficiencies of COD and TN exceeded 80%, TP removal efficiency exceeded 90%, and ENR removal efficiency approached 100%, significantly higher than reported values in similar salinity reactors. Combining the constructed physical and mathematical models of tolerant bacterial, this study will promote the practical implementation of marine bacterial-based biotechnologies in high-loading saline wastewater treatment.

Biochar inoculated with Rhodococcus biphenylivorans altered microecological regulation by promoting quorum sensing and electron transfer: Up-regulation of related genes and enhancement of phenol and ammonia degradation

Bioaugmentation is an efficient method for improving the efficiency of coking wastewater removal. Nevertheless, how different immobilization approaches affect the efficiency of bioaugmentation remains unclear, as does the corresponding mechanism. With the assistance of immobilized bioaugmentation strain Rhodococcus biphenylivorans B403, the removal of synthetic coking wastewater was investigated (drying agent, alginate agent, and absorption agent). The reactor containing the absorption agent exhibited the highest average removal efficiency of phenol (99.74 %), chemical oxygen demand (93.09 %), and NH4+-N (98.18 %). Compared to other agents, the covered extracellular polymeric substance on the absorption agent surface enhanced electron transfer and quorum sensing, and the promoted quorum sensing benefited the activated sludge stability and microbial regulation. The phytotoxicity test revealed that the wastewater's toxicity was greatly decreased in the reactor with the absorption agent, especially under high phenol concentrations. These findings showed that the absorption agent was the most suitable for wastewater treatment bioaugmentation.

Mechanism of phenanthrene degradation by the halophilic Pelagerythrobacter sp. N7

PAHs has shown worldwide accumulation and causes a significant environmental problem especially in saline and hypersaline environments. Moderately halophilic bacteria could be useful for the bioremediation of PAH pollution in hypersaline environments. Pelagerythrobacter sp. N7 was isolated from the PAH-degrading consortium 5H, which was enriched from mixed saline soil samples collected in Shanxi Province, China. 16S rRNA in the genomic DNA revealed that strain N7 belonged to Pelagerythrobacter. Strain N7 exhibited a high tolerance to a wide range of salinities (1-10%) and was highly efficient under neutral to weak alkaline conditions (pH 6-9). The whole genome of strain N7 was sequenced and analyzed, revealing an abundance of catabolic genes. Using the whole genome information, we conducted preliminary research on key enzymes and gene clusters involved in the upstream and downstream PAH degradation pathways of strain N7, thereby inferring its degradation pathway for phenanthrene and naphthalene. This study adds to our understanding of PAH degradation in hypersaline environments and, for the first time, identifies a Pelagerythrobacter with PAH-degrading capability. Strain N7, with its high efficiency in phenanthrene degradation, represents a promising resource for the bioremediation of PAHs in hypersaline environments.
