Abstract
Both ibuprofen (IBP) and chlorophene (CP) are frequently detected contaminants in surface aqueous environment. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component in water with high photo-reactivity, playing an important role in the transformation processes of various organic pollutants. This study systematically studied the influence of DOM on the photochemical transformation of IBP and CP by using humic acid as model DOM. In addition, the effect of inorganic salts on this process is also considered due to the high salt content in the ocean. Further quenching experiments and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) detection were also conducted to explore the reactive species acting on the IBP and CP transformation. Based on the products analysis and theoretical calculation, we proposed the IBP and CP transformation mechanism. Overall, this study provides some new insights into the transformation of organic pollutants in natural surface water, which is significant for assessing the fate of pollutants.

Abstract
Sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants onto thermally altered carbonaceous materials (TACM) constitutes a widely used technology for remediation of polluted waters. This process is typically described by sorption isotherms, with one of the most used models, the Polanyi-Dubinin-Manes (PDM) equation, including water solubility (Sw) as a normalizing factor. In case of pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), Sw depends on the pH of the environment due to the ionic/ionizable behavior of these chemicals, a fact frequently ignored in sorption studies of PhACs. In this work, we set the theoretical framework to include the variation of Sw with pH in the definition of the PDM model, and we applied this approach to describe the effect of ambient pH in the competitive sorption of three commonly detected PhACs (carbamazepine, ibuprofen, and sulfamethoxazole) onto three carbonaceous sorbents (biochar, powder activated carbon, and colloidal activated carbon). Changes in the ambient pH and hence in the hydrophobicity of the compounds could explain the strong variations observed in single-solute sorption and also in competitive sorption. Furthermore, Sw was used as a parameter for the linear regression model of sorption coefficients of our experiments, suggesting the incorporation of this variable as an improvement to existing approaches for prediction of PhACs sorption onto TACM.

Annamalai S, Shin WS. Algae-derived metal-free boron-doped biochar acts as a catalyst for the activation of peroxymonosulfate toward the degradation of diclofenac. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION (BARKING, ESSEX : 1987) 2023; 331:121850. Abstract
In this study, plain seaweed biochar (SW) and boron-doped seaweed biochar (BSW) were prepared through a simple pyrolysis process using Undaria pinnatifida (algae biomass) and boric acid. The BSW catalyst was utilized to degrade organic pollutants in aqueous environments by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Surface characterization of the BSW demonstrated successful doping of boron into the biochar materials. BSW600 exhibited greater catalytic activity than SW600, as evidenced by the former's maximum adsorption capacity of diclofenac (DCF) onto BSW600 (qmax = 30.01 mg g-1) and the activation of PMS. Complete degradation of DCF was achieved in 30 min using 100 mg L-1 BSW600, 0.5 mM PMS, and 6.5 initial solution pH as critical parameters. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model accurately described the DCF degradation kinetics. The scavenger experiment displayed that radical and non-radical reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed in the BSW600/PMS system. Furthermore, the generation of ROS in the BSW600/PMS system was confirmed by electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). The percentage contribution of ROS was assessed to be 10, 65, and 25% for HO•, SO4•-, and 1O2, respectively. Additionally, the electron transfer pathway was also confirmed by electrochemical analysis. Moreover, the influence of water matrics on the BSW600/PMS system was demonstrated. The co-existence of anions and humic acid (HA) did not affect the catalytic activity of the BSW600/PMS system. The recyclability of BSW600 was assessed by DCF removal (86.3%) after three cycles. Ecological structure-activity relationships software was used to assess by-product toxicity. This study demonstrates the efficacy of non-metallic heteroatom-doped biochar materials as eco-friendly catalysts in groundwater applications.
