Abstract
Recent studies have indicated that soil contamination with microplastics (MPs) can negatively affect agricultural productivity, although these effects vary greatly depending on the context. Furthermore, the mechanisms behind these effects remain largely unknown. In this study, we examined the impact of two concentrations of polypropylene (PP) fibers in the soil (0.4 % and 0.8 % w/w) on soybean growth, nitrogen uptake, biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), and water use efficiency by growing plants in two soil types, with and without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). PP contamination consistently reduced vegetative growth (-12 %, on average compared to the control), with the severity of this effect varying significantly by soil type (more pronounced in Alfisol than in Vertisol). The extent of BNF progressively reduced with the increase in PP contamination level in both soils (on average, -17.1 % in PP0.4 and -27.5 % in PP0.8 compared to the control), which poses clear agro-environmental concerns. Water use efficiency was also reduced due to PP contamination but only in the Alfisol (-9 %, on average). Mycorrhizal symbiosis did not seem to help plants manage the stress caused by PP contamination, although it did lessen the negative impact on BNF. These findings are the first to demonstrate the effect of PP on BNF in soybean plants, underscoring the need to develop strategies to reduce PP pollution in the soil and to mitigate the impact of PP on the functionality and sustainability of agroecosystems.

Abstract
Molybdenum (Mo) is a crucial microelement for both, humans and plants. The use of agronomic biofortification techniques can be an alternative method to enhance Mo content in vegetables. Concomitantly, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) application is a valuable strategy to enhance plant performances and overcome plant abiotic distresses such as microelement overdose. The aim of this research was to estimate the direct and/or indirect effects of Mo supply at four doses [0.0, 0.5 (standard dose), 2.0 or 4.0 μmol L-1], alone or combined with AMF inoculation, on plant performances. In particular, plant height and first flower truss emission, productive features (total yield, marketable yield and average marketable fruit weight) and fruit qualitative characteristics (fruit dry matter, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, lycopene, polyphenol, nitrogen, copper, iron and molybdenum) of an established cherry tomato genotype cultivated in soilless conditions were investigated. Moreover, proline and malondialdehyde concentrations, as well as Mo hazard quotient (HQ) in response to experimental treatments were determined. A split-plot randomized experimental block design with Mo dosages as plots and +AMF or -AMF as sub-plots was adopted. Data revealed that AMF inoculation enhanced marketable yield (+50.0 %), as well as some qualitative traits, such as fruit soluble solids content (SSC) (+9.9 %), ascorbic acid (+7.3 %), polyphenols (+2.3 %), and lycopene (+2.5 %). Molybdenum application significantly increased SSC, polyphenols, fruit Mo concentration (+29.0 % and +100.0 % in plants biofortified with 2.0 and 4.0 μmol Mo L-1 compared to those fertigated with the standard dose, respectively) and proline, whereas it decreased N (-25.0 % and -41.6 % in plants biofortified with 2.0 and 4.0 μmol Mo L-1 compared to those fertigated with the standard dose, respectively). Interestingly, the application of AMF mitigated the detrimental effect of high Mo dosages (2.0 or 4.0 μmol L-1). A pronounced advance in terms of plant height 45 DAT, fruit lycopene concentration and fruit Fe, Cu and Mo concentrations was observed when AMF treatment and Mo dosages (2.0 or 4.0 μmol Mo L-1) were combined. Plants inoculated or not with AMF showed an improvement in the hazard quotient (HQ) in reaction to Mo application. However, the HQ - for a consumption of 200 g day-1 of biofortified cherry tomato - remained within the safety level for human consumption. This study suggests that Mo-implementation (at 2.0 or 4.0 μmol L-1) combined with AMF inoculation could represent a viable cultivation protocol to enhance yield, produce premium quality tomato fruits and, concomitantly, improve Mo dose in human diet. In the light of our findings, further studies on the interaction between AMF and microelements in other vegetable crops are recommended.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) pose a significant threat to the function of agro-ecosystems. At present, research on MPs has mainly focused on the effects of different concentrations or types of MPs on a crop, while ignoring other environmental factors. In agricultural production, the application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is an important means to maintain the high yield of crops. The effects of MPs and N on growth parameters, photosynthetic system, active oxygen metabolism, nutrient content, and ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle of maize and wheat were studied in order to explicit whether N addition could effectively alleviate the effects of MPs on maize and wheat. The results showed that MPs inhibited the plant height of both maize and wheat, and MPs effects on physiological traits of maize were more severe than those of wheat, reflecting in reactive oxygen metabolism and restriction of photosynthetic capacity. Under the condition of N supply, AsA-GSH cycle of two plants has different response strategies to MPs: Maize promoted enzyme activity and co-accumulation of AsA and GSH, while wheat tended to consume AsA and accumulate GSH. N application induced slight oxidative stress on maize, which was manifested as an increase in hydrogen peroxide and malonaldehyde contents, and activities of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase. The antioxidant capacity of maize treated with the combination of MPs + N was better than that treated with N or MPs alone. N could effectively alleviate the adverse effects of MPs on wheat by improving the antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Soil microplastics (MPs) have attracted widespread attention recently. Most studies have explored how soil MPs affect the soil's physicochemical parameters, matter circulation, and soil microbial community assembly. Similarly, a key concern in agricultural development has been the use of phosphorus (P) fertiliser, which is essential for plant health and development. However, the relationship between MPs and phosphate fertilisers and their effects on the soil environment and plant growth remains elusive. This study assessed the influence of adding low-density polyethylene MPs (1%) with different phosphate fertiliser application rates on microbial communities and rice biomass. Our results showed that MPs changed the structure of soil bacterial and phoD-harbouring microbial communities in the treatment with P fertiliser at the same level and suppressed the interactions of phoD-harbouring microorganisms. In addition, we found that MPs contamination inhibited rice growth; however, the inclusion of P fertiliser in MP-contaminated soils reduced the inhibitory action of MPs on rice growth, probably because the presence with P fertiliser promoted the uptake of NO3--N by rice in MP-contaminated soils. Our results provide further insights into guiding agricultural production, improving agricultural management, and rationally applying phosphate fertilisers in the context of widespread MPs pollution and global P resource constraints.
