Development of Personal Protective Clothing for Reducing Exposure to Insecticides in Pesticide Applicators

Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment during the application of pesticides is one method of reducing dermal exposure to pesticides. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop personal protective clothing (PPC) coated with gum rosin and investigate the efficiency of its level of protection against chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin. Comparison of the protection efficiency of each PPC with Tychem^® C coveralls was also investigated. Five commercially available cotton fabrics were chosen for tailoring the PPC, and then, the PPC was coated with a gum rosin finish to provide water repellence. The efficiency of the level of protection of the gum rosin-coated PPC against insecticides was tested in a laboratory (closed chamber). The remarkable findings were that the % protection efficiencies for all the PPC, with the exception of one, were not significantly different to those for Tychem^® C coveralls. The protection efficiencies ranged from 99.85% to 99.97% against chlorpyrifos and 99.11% to 99.89% against cypermethrin. Therefore, our results suggest that gum rosin-coated clothing provided satisfactory levels of protection against insecticides and could be considered as suitable protective clothing for pesticide applicators. Choice of an appropriate fabric for coating with gum rosin also needs to be considered. A further study in field conditions is warranted to confirm the protection efficiency in a working environment.

Farmers' Exposure to Pesticides: Toxicity Types and Ways of Prevention

Synthetic pesticides are extensively used in agriculture to control harmful pests and prevent crop yield losses or product damage. Because of high biological activity and, in certain cases, long persistence in the environment, pesticides may cause undesirable effects to human health and to the environment. Farmers are routinely exposed to high levels of pesticides, usually much greater than those of consumers. Farmers’ exposure mainly occurs during the preparation and application of the pesticide spray solutions and during the cleaning-up of spraying equipment. Farmers who mix, load, and spray pesticides can be exposed to these chemicals due to spills and splashes, direct spray contact as a result of faulty or missing protective equipment, or even drift. However, farmers can be also exposed to pesticides even when performing activities not directly related to pesticide use. Farmers who perform manual labor in areas treated with pesticides can face major exposure from direct spray, drift from neighboring fields, or by contact with pesticide residues on the crop or soil. This kind of exposure is often underestimated. The dermal and inhalation routes of entry are typically the most common routes of farmers’ exposure to pesticides. Dermal exposure during usual pesticide handling takes place in body areas that remain uncovered by protective clothing, such as the face and the hands. Farmers’ exposure to pesticides can be reduced through less use of pesticides and through the correct use of the appropriate type of personal protective equipment in all stages of pesticide handling.

Dermal exposure associated with occupational end use of pesticides and the role of protective measures

BACKGROUND

Occupational end users of pesticides may experience bodily absorption of the pesticide products they use, risking possible health effects. The purpose of this paper is to provide a guide for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers working in the field of agricultural health or other areas where occupational end use of pesticides and exposure issues are of interest.

METHODS

This paper characterizes the health effects of pesticide exposure, jobs associated with pesticide use, pesticide-related tasks, absorption of pesticides through the skin, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for reducing exposure.

CONCLUSIONS

Although international and national efforts to reduce pesticide exposure through regulatory means should continue, it is difficult in the agricultural sector to implement engineering or system controls. It is clear that use of PPE does reduce dermal pesticide exposure but compliance among the majority of occupationally exposed pesticide end users appears to be poor. More research is needed on higher-order controls to reduce pesticide exposure and to understand the reasons for poor compliance with PPE and identify effective training methods.

Evaluation by Environmental Monitoring of Pesticide Absorption in Farm Workers of 18 Italian Tomato Cultivations

Tomato cultivation farms of Southern Italy were investigated in order to evaluate the general working conditions and the levels of exposure of farm workers to pesticides, during the mixing/loading and the application of pesticides on fields. Information on working modalities, personal protective equipment, etc. was collected using a questionnaire. Inhaling and cutaneous exposure levels were measured, and the estimated pesticide total absorbed dose was compared with Admissible Daily Intakes (ADIs). Field treatments were mainly carried out by using sprayers with open cab tractors, and, in 57.9% of cases, the pesticide mixture was manually prepared by mixing pesticides in a pail, often without using gloves (59.5%). The estimated pesticides absorbed doses varied in the range 0.56–2630.31 mg (mean value, 46.9 mg), and 20% of the measured absorbed doses exceeded ADIs. The findings obtained in the 18 examined farms show a worrying situation, suggesting the investigation of many more farms, so that a statistically significant picture of tomato cultivations in Southern Italy could be formed. Besides, the planning of training courses aimed to increase workers consciousness about health risks and how they can be prevented is advisable.
