Abstract
BACKGROUND Xenoestrogens are synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals capable of altering the endocrine system of humans and animals owing to their molecular similarity to endogenous hormones. There is limited data regarding their effects on women´s health. Chronic exposure to xenoestrogens can promote the development of estrogen-related diseases. OBJECTIVES To examine xenoestrogen concentration (TEXB-α) differences between women with leiomyomas or endometriosis and control women, and to study the relationship between the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of these patients and their xenoestrogen levels. METHODS Prospective case-control study. We selected 221 women who underwent surgery at Quironsalud Madrid University Hospital between 2017 and 2021. The cases included 117 patients: 74 women who underwent surgery for uterine leiomyomas, 21 with endometriosis, and 22 with both pathologies. The control group comprised 104 healthy women who underwent surgical procedures for other reasons. TEXB-α was determined in the omental fat of all patients. Using a questionnaire and reviewing the patients' medical records, we collected sociodemographic data and other relevant variables. RESULTS A significant majority of study participants (68.8%) had detectable levels of xenoestrogens. We found no association between TEXB-α levels in omental fat and the presence of myomas or endometriosis. In the case group, women living or working in Madrid Community exhibited, on average, 3.12 Eeq pM/g higher levels of TEXB-α compared to those working in other areas (p = 0.030). Women who referred to the use of estrogen-containing hormonal contraceptives had, on average, 3.02 Eeq pM/g higher levels of TEXB-α than those who had never used them (p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS This study found no association between omental xenoestrogen levels and leiomyomas or endometriosis. However, their presence in most participants and their association with highly polluted areas emphasizes the importance of limiting environmental exposure to these substances. We also identified an association between hormonal contraceptive use and xenoestrogen concentration.

Abstract
Chronic exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is suspected to contribute to the onset of breast cancer, but the impact on the evolution of patients after diagnosis is unclear. We aimed to analyze the contribution of long-term exposure to five POPs to overall mortality, cancer recurrence, metastasis, and development of second primary tumors over a global follow-up of 10 years after surgery in breast cancer patients in a cohort study. Between 2012 and 2014, a total of 112 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients were recruited from a public hospital in Granada, Southern Spain. Historical exposure to POPs was estimated by analyzing their concentrations in breast adipose tissue samples. Sociodemographic data were collected through face-to-face interviews, while data on evolution tumor were retrieved from clinical records. Statistical analyses were performed using Cox regression (overall survival, breast cancer recurrence or metastasis) and binary logistic regression models (joint outcome variable). We also tested for statistical interactions of POPs with age, residence, and prognostic markers. The third vs first tertile of hexachlorobenzene concentrations was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality (Hazard Ratio, HR = 0.26; 95 % Confidence Interval, CI = 0.07-0.92) and of the appearance of any of the four events (Odds Ratio = 0.37; 95 % CI = 0.14-1.03). Polychlorinated biphenyl 138 concentrations were significantly and inversely associated with risk of metastasis (HR = 0.65; 95 % CI = 0.44-0.97) and tumor recurrence (HR = 0.69; 95 % CI = 0.49-0.98). Additionally, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene showed inverse associations with risk of metastasis in women with ER-positive tumors (HR = 0.49; 95 % CI = 0.25-0.93) and in those with a tumor size <2.0 cm (HR = 0.39; 95 % CI = 0.18-0.87). The observed paradoxical inverse associations of POP exposure with breast cancer evolution might be related to either a better prognosis of hormone-dependent tumors, which have an approachable pharmacological target, or an effect of sequestration of circulating POPs by adipose tissue.

Abstract
This study evaluated nickel and aluminium-induced neurotoxicity, as a binary metal mixture. Twenty-eight male Sprague Dawley albino rats were weight-matched and divided into four groups. Group 1 (control) received deionized water. Group 2 and 3 received Aluminium (1 mg/kg) and Nickel (0.2 mg/kg) respectively, while Group 4 received Ni and Al mixture HMM three times a week orally for 90 days. Barnes maze tests was performed. Rats were sacrificed under pentobarbital anaesthesia, cerebral cortex and hippocampus were separated, and metal levels were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), glutathione content (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), Nerve growth factor NGF, cyclo-oxygenase COX-2 and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were assayed using ELISA kits. Ni/Al binary mixture exposed rats showed a shorter latency period (though not significant) of 3.21 ± 1.40 s in comparison to 3.77 ± 1.11 (Ni only) and 3.99 ± 1.16(Al only). Ni/Al mixture gp had the lowest levels of Mg in both the hippocampus and frontal cortex when compared with the individual metals. In the hippocampus Al only exposed rats significantly showed p < 0.05 higher iron and Ca levels in comparison to Ni/Al mixture. Al alone significantly showed p < 0.05 lower levels of Fe but higher Ca than the Ni/Al mixture group. Exposure to Al only showed lower levels of BDNF in comparison to Ni/Al combination, whereas Ni/Al mixture gp had lower levels of NGF in comparison to the individual metals in the hippocampus. In the frontal cortex Ni only, group showed significantly lower BDNF in comparison to Ni/Al mixture whereas the mixture showed significantly lower NGF when compared with Al only group. There were higher levels of COX-2 in the Ni/Al mixture than individual metal treated rats in both hippocampus and frontal cortex. AChE levels in the Ni/Al mixture group was higher than Ni or Al only gps in the hippocampus whereas in the frontal cortex, Ni/Al exposed rats showed significantly lower AChE levels in comparison to Al only group. Ni, Al and Ni/Al mixture exhibited memory impairment by activation of oxidative stress, COX-2, and diminution of AChE, BDNF and NGF levels in cerebral cortex and hippocampus. The BDNF-COX-2 AChE signalling pathway may be involved in the neurotoxicity of Ni and Al.

Abstract
To identify bioaccumulation patterns of α-, β- hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dicofol in relation to sociodemographic, dietary, and lifestyle factors, adipose tissue samples of 387 subjects from GraMo cohort in Southern Spain were analyzed. Potential predictors of these organochlorine pesticides (OCP) levels were collected by face-to-face interviews and assessed by multivariable linear and logistic regression. OCPs were detected in 84.2% (β-HCH), 21.7% (α-HCH), and 19.6% (dicofol) of the population. β-HCH levels were positively related to age, body mass index (BMI), mother's occupation in agriculture during pregnancy, living in Poniente and Alpujarras, white fish, milk and water consumption, and negatively related to being male, living near to an agricultural area, working ≥10 years in agriculture, and beer consumption. Detectable α-HCH levels were positively related to age, BMI, milk consumption, mother's occupation in agriculture during pregnancy, and negatively with residence in Poniente and Alpujarras, Granada city, and Granada Metropolitan Area. Residence near to an agricultural area, smoking habit, white fish and water consumption, and living in Poniente and Alpujarras, Granada city and Granada Metropolitan Area were negatively associated with detectable dicofol levels. Our study revealed different bioaccumulation patterns of α, β-HCH and dicofol, probably due to their dissimilar period of use, and emphasize the need for assessing the exposure to frequently overlooked pollutants.
