Abstract
Anaerobic fermentation (AF) processes are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can influence the microbial activity and overall metabolic performances. Anaerobic reactors can face unforeseen temperature control failures, leading to instabilities in the process. The present study investigated the effect of two short-term temperature perturbations (down to 20°C and 15°C) on AF of food wastes (FWs). While 20°C did not exhibit a negative impact on AF performance maintaining the bioconversion yields over 40%, the reactor subjected to 15°C presented an acidogenic limitation, which decreased the bioconversion yields (36.4 ± 1.8%). As a result, 2.2 ± 0.5 g/L of succinic acid was accumulated in the reactor, being identified as a temperature failure indicator. Once the conditions were reestablished (operation temperature of 25ºC), the metabolic redundancies identified in the reactors allowed the AFs recovery to initial fermentation yields. 20°C was further tested as operational temperature resulting in stable bioconversion yield similar to the Control Reactor (43.2 ± 0.3%). These results showed the feasibility of conducting AF under low temperatures, indicating the potential of this technology to increase the cost-effectiveness of AF at psychrophilic conditions.

Abstract
The valorization of vinasses into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) via anaerobic fermentation (AF) is an emerging approach that remains under research. Given the diverse microbial metabolisms simultaneously occurring in AF, the control of operational parameters is essential to avoid process destabilization. To unravel their effect, the novelty of this investigation relied on the evaluation of the robustness of AF process against operational perturbation deliberately set (i.e. hydraulic retention time (HRT) and temperature increase). Regardless the applied perturbation, similar yields (0.5-0.6 g COD-SCFAs/g VSin) were attained. However, the selected perturbations exerted an effect on microbiome development. Whereas the temperature increase mediated a 49.70% microbiome dissimilarity, only a 21.91% dissimilarity was caused by the HRT increase. Microbial analysis revealed Clostridiales, Prevotella and Megasphaera as key bacteria in vinasses degradation. The similar bioconversion obtained despite the different microbiomes developed after each perturbation suggested a functional redundancy highlighting the AF robustness. These findings evidenced AF as a feasible biotechnology to further valorize vinasse into SCFAs, demonstrating the process stability against common perturbations that might be encountered at industrial scale.

Abstract
Food waste is a major problem faced by human beings. Acidogenic fermentation is an effective and feasible technology for resource recovery from food waste. The mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) hinders the utilization of fermentation products. In this study, we constructed fermentation reactors for food waste treatment. The operation period was separated to three stages: Stage 1 (from day 1-102), Stage 2 (from day 103-208), and Stage 3 (from day 209-304). CO2 was sparged to the reactors to promote the acetate enrichment at Stage 3. Bioinformatics analysis were performed to analyze the microbial community, genes, and pathways. Results showed that the highest average concentration of acetate was 6044 mg-COD/L (R1) and 5000 mg-COD/L (R2) at Stage 3, which was corresponded to the stage with highest acetate ratio (63% and 66% in R1 and R2). But the highest total VFAs concentration was 39424 mg-COD/L at Stage 2. Aeriscardovia belonging to Actinobacteria had an average relative abundance of 85.7% after CO2 sparging. Compared with Stage 1 and Stage 2, the number of down-regulated genes and pathways at Stage 3 were much higher than the number of up-regulated genes and pathways. The significant down-regulated genes were wcaB and ttrC, and the significant down-regulated pathways were pyruvate fermentation to acetone and acetyl-CoA fermentation to butanoate II pathway. This study demonstrated that CO2 can promote the acetate enrichment during food waste fermentation. The main mechanism was enriching acetate fermentation microorganisms and inhibiting the interfere genes and pathways.

Abstract
This research investigated the acidogenic fermentation (AF) of sugar cane molasses in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for the production of carboxylates. The first step was to assess the optimum process temperature (25, 35 or 55 ºC) using two different granular inocula, one from a brewery company (BGS) and other from a paper plant company (PGS). These experiments determined that the most suitable temperature for carboxylates production was 25 ºC, obtaining higher bioconversions (27.3 ± 0.3% using PGS and 39.2 ± 0.2% using BGS), despite the low pH value recorded (4.0-4.2). Then, both inocula were tested in UASB reactors. As a consequence of the operational conditions (25 ºC, pH = 5.5-6, organic loading rate (OLR) = 3 gCOD·L-1·d-1 and hydraulic retention time (HRT) = 10 d), the microbial communities changed from those typical for biogas production to those specialised in the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Indeed, the highest bioconversion efficiency (70.1%) was obtained with BGS, where uncultured Eubacteriaceae family microorganisms (56.0%) prevailed, enhancing the production of butyric acid (59.5 ± 2.4%w/w). Consequently, this inoculum was used to further identify the OLR threshold that should not be exceeded to attain optimal carboxylates production. OLR of 6 gCOD·L-1·d-1 resulted in a decrease in bioconversion efficiency (59.5%). The VFAs pool was dominated by butyric acid (63.0 ± 1.4%w/w at an OLR of 4.5 gCOD·L-1·d-1 and 52.8 ± 2.2%w/w at 6 gCOD·L-1·d-1). The microbial community became even more specialised, increasing the presence of Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota phyla, proving that the imposed conditions favoured the production of VFAs when operating semicontinuously fed UASB reactors.

Abstract
The effect of operational conditions on the stability of acidogenic fermentation (AF) devoted to volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production still presents numerous gaps to achieve high yields and fully understand the responses of open microbiomes associated to this technology. To cope with that, this investigation was designed to assess the stability of VFAs production via AF of agro-food wastes at high hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (20 and 30 d) and pH oscillations (5.8-6.2). Similar bioconversion efficiencies (∼50 %) were reached regardless of the HRT, revealing that HRT of 20 d can be considered as a threshold from which, no further improvement was achieved. The combination of long HRTs, 25 °C and acid pHs promoted a robust microbiome that resulted in a stable outcome against pH variations, being Clostridiales order identified as key player of AF stability. These conditions mediated a high selectivity in the VFAs production profile, with acetic and butyric acids, prevailing in the VFAs pool (∼80 % of total VFAs) at HRT 20 d. The selection of appropriated conditions was shown to be critical to maximize the hydrolysis and acidogenesis of the substrate and attain a stable effluent against pH oscillations.

Abstract
Waste activated sludge (WAS) as one of the major pollutants with a significant annual production, has garnered significant attention regarding its treatment and utilization. If improperly discharged, it not only caused environmental pollution but also led to the wastage of valuable resources. In this study, the microalgae growth and lipid accumulation using waste activated sludge extracts (WASE) under different temperature conditions were investigated. The highest lipid content (59.13%) and lipid productivity (80.41 mg L-1 d-1) were obtained at cultivation temperatures of 10 and 25 °C, respectively. It was found that microalgae can effectively utilize TN/TP/NH4+-N and other nutrients of WASE. The highest utilization rates of TP, TN and NH4+-N were achieved at a cultivation temperature of 10 °C, reaching 84.97, 77.49 and 92.32%, respectively. The algal fatty acids had carbon chains predominantly ranging from C14 to C18, making them suitable for biodiesel production. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics revealed up-regulation of genes associated with triglyceride assembly, the antioxidant system of algal cells, and cellular autophagy, as well as the accumulation of metabolites related to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and lipids. This study offers novel insights into the microscopic mechanisms of microalgae culture using WASE and approaches for the resource utilization of sludge.

Abstract
Promoting short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production and ensuring the stability of SCFAs-producing process are becoming the two major issues for popularizing the acidogenic fermentation (AF). The key controlling operating and influencing factors during anaerobic fermentation process were thoroughly reviewed to facilitate better process performance prediction and to optimize the process control of SCFAs promotion. The wide utilization of iron salt flocculants during wastewater treatment could result in iron accumulating in sewage sludge which influenced AF performance. Additionally, appropriate ferric chloride (FC) could promote the SCFAs accumulation, while poly ferric sulfate (PFS) inhibited the bioprocess. Iron/persulfate (PS) system was proved to effectively enhance the SCFAs production while mechanism analysis revealed that the strong oxidizing radicals remarkably enhanced the solubilization and hydrolysis. Moreover, the changes of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and pH caused by iron/PS system exhibited more negative effects on the methanogens, comparing to the acidogenic bacteria. Furthermore, performance and mechanisms of different iron species-activating PS, organic chelating agents and iron-rich biochar derived from sewage sludge were also elucidated to extend and strengthen understanding of the iron/PS system for enhancing SCFAs production. Considering the large amount of generated Fe-sludge and the multiple benefits of iron activating PS system, carbon neutral wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were proposed with Fe-sludge as a promising recycling composite to improve AF performance. It is expected that this review can deepen the knowledge of optimizing AF process and improving the iron/PS system for enhancing SCFAs production and provide useful insights to researchers in this field.

Abstract
Global reliance on fossil oil should shift to cleaner alternatives to get a decarbonized society. One option to achieve this ambitious goal is the use of biochemicals produced from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB). The inherent low biodegradability of LCB and the inhibitory compounds that might be released during pretreatment are two main challenges for LCB valorization. At microbiological level, constraints are mostly linked to the need for axenic cultures and the preference for certain carbon sources (i.e., glucose). To cope with these issues, this review focuses on efficient LCB conversion via the sugar platform as well as an innovative carboxylate platform taking advantage of the co-cultivation of microorganisms. This review discusses novel trends in the use of microbial communities and co-cultures aiming at different bioproducts co-generation in single reactors as well as in sequential bioprocess combination. The outlook and further perspectives of these alternatives have been outlined for future successful development.

Abstract
The carboxylate platform is a sustainable and cost-effective way to valorize wastes into biochemicals that replace those of fossil origin. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are intermediates generated during anaerobic fermentation (AF) and are considered high-value-added biochemicals among carboxylates. This investigation aimed to produce SCFAs through the AF of sugar beet molasses at 25 °C and semi-continuous feeding mode in completely stirred tank reactors. A particular focus was devoted to the role of hydraulic retention time (HRT) variation in SCFAs production and distribution profile. The highest SCFAs concentration (44.1 ± 2.3 gCOD/L) was reached at the HRT of 30 days. Caproic acid accounted for 32.5-35.5% (COD-concentration basis) at the long HRTs of 20 and 30 days due to the carbon chain elongation of shorter carboxylic acids. The findings of this study proved that HRT could be used to steer the anaerobic process toward the targeted SCFAs for specific uses. Furthermore, the successful operation at low-temperature conditions (i.e., 25 °C) makes the process economically promising.

Abstract
Carboxylic acids have become interesting platform molecules in the last years due to their versatility to act as carbon sources for different microorganisms or as precursors for the chemical industry. Among carboxylic acids, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, and caproic acids can be biotechnologically produced in an anaerobic fermentation process from lignocellulose or other organic wastes of agricultural, industrial, or municipal origin. The biosynthesis of SCFAs is advantageous compared to chemical synthesis, since the latter relies on fossil-derived raw materials, expensive and toxic catalysts and harsh process conditions. This review article gives an overview on biosynthesis of SCFAs from complex waste products. Different applications of SCFAs are explored and how these acids can be considered as a source of bioproducts, aiming at the development of a circular economy. The use of SCFAs as platform molecules requires adequate concentration and separation processes that are also addressed in this review. Various microorganisms such as bacteria or oleaginous yeasts can efficiently use SCFA mixtures derived from anaerobic fermentation, an attribute that can be exploited in microbial electrolytic cells or to produce biopolymers such as microbial oils or polyhydroxyalkanoates. Promising technologies for the microbial conversion of SCFAs into bioproducts are outlined with recent examples, highlighting SCFAs as interesting platform molecules for the development of future bioeconomy.

Abstract
Added-value chemicals production via food waste (FWs) valorization using open-mixed cultures is an emerging approach to replace petrochemical-based compounds. Nevertheless, the effects of operational parameters on the product spectrum remain uncertain given the wide number of co-occurring species and metabolisms. In this study, the identification of 58 metagenome-assembled genomes and their investigation assessed the effect of slight pH variations on microbial dynamics and the corresponding functions when FWs were subjected to anaerobic fermentation (AF) in 1-L continuous stirred tank reactors at 25 °C. The initial pH of 6.5 promoted a microbial community involved in acetate, butyrate and ethanol production, mediated by Bifidobacterium subtile IE007 and Eubacteriaceae IE027 as main species. A slight pH decrease to 6.1 shaped microbial functions that resulted in caproate and H2 production, increasing the relevance of Eubacteriaceae IE037 role. This study elucidated the strong pH effect on product outputs when minimal variations take place in AF.

Abstract
The impact of food waste (FW) composition on co-fermentation performance was studied to elucidate if adjusting FW composition can be used to drive the fermentation yield and profile, which is relevant for biorefinery applications. First, the impact of individual FW components (i.e., fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, meat, fish, and cellulose) was assessed. Subsequently, the effect of mixing a protein-rich component and a carbohydrate-rich component was studied (i.e., fish/fruit and fish/cellulose, and meat/rice and meat/vegetable). All experiments were carried out in mesophilic batch assays using waste activated sludge (WAS) as main substrate, the same mixture ratio (70 % WAS +30 % FW on VS basis), and no pH control. Results showed that each FW component had a distinct effect on VFA yield and profile, with protein-rich components reaching the highest VFA yields; 502 and 442 mgCOD/gVS for WAS/Fish and WAS/Meat, respectively. A positive interaction on VFA yield was observed when mixing a protein-rich and a carbohydrate-rich component. This interaction was not proportional to the co-substrates proportion in the mixtures. On the other hand, the VFA profile was clearly driven by the components in the mixture, including both WAS and FW composition. Overall, these results indicate that predicting the VFA yield of WAS/FW co-fermentation is not just related to FW composition, but FW composition could be used to adjust the VFA profile to a certain extent.

Abstract
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) generation through anaerobic fermentation has been regarded as a promising pathway to achieve carbon recovery and economic benefits in waste activated sludge management. Despite the cation exchange resin (CER) assistant anaerobic fermentation strategy has been previously reported for enhancing anaerobic fermentation, the overlarge CER usage and serious CER pollution have limited its engineering application. This study provided a reconsideration for the operation pattern modification. Through 4-day anaerobic fermentation with CER residence period shrinking to 1 day, 40.9% sludge VSS solubilization and reduction were achieved, triggering a considerable sludge hydrolysis rate of 28.4%. Thereby, SCFAs production was improved to 264.8 mg COD/g VSS. Such performances were approximately 80.2-87.8% of those with conventional CER residence period (8 days). The organic composition distribution and parallel factor analysis demonstrated that similar biodegradability and utilizability of fermentative liquid were achievable with various operation patterns. Compared with the conventional operation pattern, the modified operation pattern with shortened CER residence period (1 day) also displayed satisfying anaerobic fermentation efficiency and numerous engineering bene fits, e.g. decreased CER usage, reduced engineering footprint, relieved CER fouling, and increased operation convenience. The findings might provide sustainable development for CER assistant anaerobic fermentation strategy and enlighten the direction of anaerobic fermentation process.
