Abstract
Bioplastics made of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with a 20 mol% HV fraction are highly desirable in the market for 3-Hydroxyvalerate (HV)-conferred superior thermal, biological, and mechanical properties. Although Haloferax mediterranei (HM) is capable of producing PHBV from food waste, its HV fraction is generally lower than 10 mol%. This study for the first time investigated the engineering approach to increasing HV fraction through elevating the propionic and valeric acid fractions in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced from food waste via arrested anaerobic digestion with and without microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) incorporation. Results showed that HV fraction in PHBV produced by HM is proportional to the fractions of propionic and valeric acids in VFAs. A 20 mol% HV fraction can be achieved by MECs incorporation, which might be attributable to pH regulation by the MECs. These findings lay a foundation for developing waste-processing technologies that enable the production of high-value, microbially-derived materials.

Abstract
The production of bacterial cellulose (BC) has indeed garnered global attention due to its versatile properties and applications. Despite potential benefits, the challenges like low productivity, high fermentation costs, and expensive culture media hinder its industrialization. Utilizing low-cost substrates, especially waste streams, can help address the challenges. In this study, waste feedstocks such as restaurant leftovers, oranges, and grapefruit from canteens and supermarkets were valorized for BC production by Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans. Orange juice is a fascinating substrate with a highest concentration of 20.6 g/L and productivity of 2.05 g/L/d. Using HS medium with supplementary ions, organic acids, ethanol, and various carbon sources is a strategic approach for enhancing BC production. The study reveals that the addition of organic acids or ethanol moderately increased BC production, while ions inhibit BC synthesis, highlighting the complex interplay between various cultivation medium components. Additionally, fermentation with K. sucrofermentans using single and mixed carbon sources was conducted to elucidate the potential metabolic mechanism of BC production. Through alkaline treatment and drying in a 30 °C incubator, we produced the highest quality BC with 92.09 % crystallinity. Overall, the study enhances BC production knowledge and provides green and sustainable strategies for fermentative BC production.

Abstract
The substantial build-up of non-biodegradable plastic waste from packaging sector not only poses severe environmental threats but also hastens the depletion of natural petroleum-based resources. Presently, poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxy valerate) (PHBV), received enormous attention as ideal alternatives for such traditional petroleum-derived plastics based on their biocompatibility and superior mechanical properties. However, high cost of such copolymer, due to expensive nature of feedstock, inefficient microbial processes and unfavorable downstream processing strategies restricts its large-scale commercial feasibility in the packaging sector. This review explores merits and challenges associated with using potent agricultural and industrial waste biomasses as sustainable feedstocks alongside improved fermentation and downstream processing strategies for the biopolymer in terms of biorefinery concept. Despite PHBV's attractive properties, its inherent shortcomings like weak thermal stability, poor mechanical properties, processability difficulty, substantial hydrophobicity and comparatively higher water vapor permeability (WVP) demand the development of its composites based on the application. Based on this fact, the review assessed properties and potential applications of PHBV-based composite materials having natural raw materials, nanomaterials and synthetic biodegradable polymers. Besides, the review also enlightens sustainability, future prospects, and challenges associated with PHBV-based composites in the field of food packaging while considering insights about economic evaluation and life cycle assessment.

Abstract
Lignocellulose is a major biopolymer in plant biomass with a complex structure and composition. It consists of a significant amount of high molecular aromatic compounds, particularly vanillin, syringeal, ferulic acid, and muconic acid, that could be converted into intracellular metabolites such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and hydroxybutyrate (PHB), a key component of bioplastic production. Several pre-treatment methods were utilized to release monosaccharides, which are the precursors of the relevant pathway. The consolidated bioprocessing of lignocellulose-capable microbes for biomass depolymerization was discussed in this study. Carbon can be stored in a variety of forms, including PHAs, PHBs, wax esters, and triacylglycerides. From a biotechnology standpoint, these compounds are quite adaptable due to their precursors' utilization of hydrogen energy. This study lays the groundwork for the idea of lignocellulose valorization into value-added products through several significant dominant pathways.

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are natural biopolyesters produced by microorganisms that represent one of the most promising candidates for the replacement of conventional plastics due to their complete biodegradability and advantageous material properties which can be modulated by varying their monomer composition. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB-co-3HV)] has received particular research attention because it can be synthesized based on the same microbial platform developed for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] without much modification, with as high productivity as P(3HB). It also offers more useful mechanical and thermal properties than P(3HB), which broaden its application as a biocompatible and biodegradable polyester. However, a significant commercial disadvantage of P(3HB-co-3HV) is its rather high production cost, thus many studies have investigated the economical synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV) from structurally related and unrelated carbon sources in both wild-type and recombinant microbial strains. A large number of metabolic engineering strategies have also been proposed to tune the monomer composition of P(3HB-co-3HV) and thus its material properties. In this review, recent metabolic engineering strategies designed for enhanced production of P(3HB-co-3HV) are discussed, along with their current status, limitations, and future perspectives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The escalating global concerns about food waste and the imperative need for sustainable practices have fuelled a burgeoning interest in the valorization of food waste. This comprehensive review delves into various technologies employed for converting food waste into valuable bio-based products. The article surveys individual technologies, ranging from traditional to cutting-edge methods, highlighting their respective mechanisms, advantages, and challenges. SCOPE AND APPROACH The exploration encompasses enzymatic processes, microbial fermentation, anaerobic digestion, and emerging technologies such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal processing. Each technology's efficacy in transforming food waste into bio-based products such as biofuels, enzymes, organic acids, prebiotics, and biopolymers is critically assessed. The review also considers the environmental and economic implications of these technologies, shedding light on their sustainability and scalability. The article discusses the role of technological integration and synergies in creating holistic approaches for maximizing the valorization potential of food waste. Key finding and conclusion: This review consolidates current knowledge on the valorization of food waste, offering a comprehensive understanding of individual technologies and their contributions to the sustainable production of bio-based products. The synthesis of information presented here aims to guide researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders in making informed decisions to address the global challenge of food waste while fostering a circular and eco-friendly economy.

Abstract
In view of implementing green technologies for bioplastic turning polices, novel durable feedstock for Bacillus mycoides ICRI89 used for efficient polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) generation is proposed herein. First, two food waste (FW) pretreatment methods were compared, where the ultrasonication approach for 7 min was effective in easing the following enzymatic action. After treatment with a mixture of cellulase/amylases, an impressive 25.3 ± 0.22 g/L of glucose was liberated per 50 g of FW. Furthermore, a notable 2.11 ± 0.06 g/L PHB and 3.56 ± 0.11 g/L cell dry eight (CDW) over 120 h were generated, representing a productivity percentage of 59.3 wt% using 25% FW hydrolysate. The blend of polyhydroxybutyrate/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PHB/PMMA = 1:2) possessed the most satisfactory mechanical properties. For the first time, PHB was chemically crosslinked with PMMA using dicumyl peroxide (DCP), where a concentration of 0.3 wt% had a considerable effect on increasing the mechanical stability of the blend. FTIR analysis confirmed the molecular interaction between PHB and PMMA showing a modest expansion of the C=O stretching vibration at 1725 cm-1. The DCP-PHB/PMMA blend had significant thermal stability and biodegradation profiles comparable to those of the main constituent polymers. More importantly, a 3-Dimetional (3D) filament was successfully extruded with a diameter of 1.75 mm, where no blockages or air bubbles were noticed via SEM. A new PHB/PMMA "key of life" 3D model has been printed with a filling percentage of 60% and a short printing time of 19.2 min. To conclude, high-performance polymeric 3D models have been fabricated to meet the pressing demands for future applications of sustainable polymers.

Abstract
Kitchen waste (KW) is frequently available for free or with a negative cost due to its huge production. It contains a large proportion of organic substances, especially fermentable sugars, which can be used for bioplastic (polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHA) synthesis. Nevertheless, due to the difficulties in processing, various pre-treatments of KW are being investigated to enhance the concentration of simple sugars released during its hydrolysis. The effective use of KW will help in minimizing the issues of its inappropriate disposal. However, the review on KW to bioplastic synthesis is rarely reported in the literature. Hence, this particular review provides a comprehensive summary of the updated research developments in KW valorization and its potency as a feedstock for PHAs synthesis. Additionally, the impacts of KW, its availability, the necessary pre-treatments for the biopolymerization process, as well as the prospects and challenges for industrially generating sustainable PHAs, are critically discussed.
