Abstract
Although previous studies have shown that preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation training may improve postoperative prognosis in patients with lung cancer, the literature included in the existing meta-analysis is highly heterogeneous and lacks effective subgroup analysis. Therefore, an updated meta-analysis is needed to integrate the latest published randomized controlled clinical trials (RCT). This updated analysis was performed to identify the clinical effects of preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation on physical rehabilitation (lung function, activity endurance, and dyspnea), psychological rehabilitation, quality of life, length of hospital stay, and postoperative pulmonary complications in patients with lung cancer. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science database were searched since inception up to March 2024. A random-effects model was used to pool data, and sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to explore the stability of outcomes and potential sources of heterogeneity. All analyses were conducted via Review Manager 5.4.1 and STATA 15.0. The final analysis included 11 RCTs with 1250 patients. The results of meta-analysis suggest that preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with lung cancer after surgery (SMD: 0.16; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.32; P = 0.04) and significantly reduce the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) (RR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.60; P < 0.0001). The results of subgroup analysis suggested that the effect of combined preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation was significantly better than that of preoperative rehabilitation alone, and the effect of short-term preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation (≤ 3 weeks) was significantly better than that of long-term rehabilitation. Preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with lung cancer can significantly improve their postoperative quality of life and reduce postoperative complications, but factors such as intervention time and intervention method may affect the rehabilitation effect.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Lung cancer is a common cancer, and its impact on public health is not only reflected in the 1 million deaths it causes annually but also in the significant implications it has on daily activities and quality of life, resulting in a considerable burden on healthcare systems. This review aims to determine the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation and pre- or post-surgical exercise in patients with lung cancer. Materials and methods: A systematic review with a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published between 2010 and 2024 was conducted; the search was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane Clinical Trial, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scielo, and LILAC. Results: Pulmonary rehabilitation or exercise before surgery was associated with a greater 6 min walking distance (MD: 37.42, 95% CI: 9.68-65.1; p = 0.008); however, it had no implications on hospital stay (MD: -0.91, 95% CI: -1.88-0.055; p = 0.06). When the intervention was performed post-surgery, higher FEV1 (SMD: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.32-0.92; p = 0.0001) and improved 6 min walking distances (60.8, 95% CI: 20.96-100.6; p = 0.0033) were found compared to standard management. Conclusions: This review suggests that, depending on the timing of implementation, pulmonary rehabilitation or exercise could produce positive effects on certain clinical variables in lung cancer patients.

Abstract
The emergence of virtual reality (VR) technologies is currently shaping the healthcare system and is now being employed in various healthcare interventions. Pulmonary rehabilitation remains one such area in which VR is currently thriving to ensure overall health and well-being. While the importance of these novel technologies is being primarily researched in pulmonary rehabilitation, especially over passive conventional breathing exercise training, there seems to be a limited number of studies that have comprehensively put together these findings. This study utilizes a scoping review methodology to review VR exercises in clinical settings related to pulmonary rehabilitation. To achieve this objective, three electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Library) were searched using a formulated search string related to the research objective. Following the database search, a total of 236 references were retrieved and managed using the reference manager. The screening of references was conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 screening process, and their quality was assessed using the JBI checklist. Ultimately, a total of eight publications of high quality were selected for inclusion in the scoping review. The results of the synthesis validate the importance of utilizing VR in the context of breathing exercise in rehabilitation. The effectiveness and rapid development of VR breathing exercises are primarily attributed to the engaging and immersive experience they provide. The use of biofeedback and self-regulation techniques into VR exercise systems was also seen to have a notable impact on the effectiveness of the breathing exercise system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of rehabilitation either before or after operation for lung cancer on postoperative pulmonary complications and the length of hospital stay. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, CINAHL Plus, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo and Embase were searched from inception until June 2021. REVIEW METHODS Inclusion criteria were patients scheduled to undergo or had undergone operation for lung cancer, randomised controlled trials comparing rehabilitative interventions initiated before hospital discharge to usual care control. Two reviewers independently assessed eligibility, extracted data and risks of bias. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) or standardised mean differences (SMDs) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were estimated using random-effects meta-analyses. RESULTS Twenty-three studies were included (12 preoperative, 10 postoperative and 1 perioperative), with 2068 participants. The pooled postoperative pulmonary complication risk and length of hospital stay were reduced after preoperative interventions (OR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.22, 0.47; I2 = 0.0% and SMD = -1.68 days, 95% CI = -2.23, -1.13; I2 = 77.8%, respectively). Interventions delivered during the immediate postoperative period did not have any significant effects on either postoperative pulmonary complication or length of hospital stay (OR = 0.85; 95% CI = 0.56, 1.29; I2 = 0.0% and SMD = -0.23 days, 95% CI = -1.08, 0.63; I2 = 64.6%, respectively). Meta-regression showed an association between a higher number of supervised sessions and shorter hospital length of stay in preoperative studies (β = -0.17, 95% CI = -0.29, -0.05). CONCLUSION Preoperative rehabilitation is effective in reducing postoperative pulmonary complications and length of hospital stay associated with lung cancer surgery. Short-term postoperative rehabilitation in inpatient settings is probably ineffective.
