Synthesis, physical and magnetic properties of BaFe12O19/P(VDF-TrFE) multifunctional composites

Magnetostrictive and Magnetoactive Effects in Piezoelectric Polymer Composites

A mesoscopic model for a polymer-based magnetoelectric (ME) composite film is developed. The film is assumed to consist of a piezoelectric polymer matrix of the PVDF type filled with CFO-like single-domain nanoparticles. The model is treated numerically and enables one to obtain in detail the intrinsic distributions of mechanical stress, polarization and electric potential and helps to understand the influence of the main configurational parameters, viz., the poling direction and the orientational order of the particle magnetic anisotropy axes on the electric response of the film. As the model is fairly simple-it uses the RVE-like (Representative Volume Element) approach with a single-particle cell-the results obtained are rather of qualitative than quantitative nature. However, the general conclusions seem to be independent of the particularities of the model. Namely, the presented results establish that the customary ME effect in composite films always comprises at least two contributions of different origins, viz., the magnetostrictive and the magnetoactive (magnetorotational) ones. The relative proportion between those contributions is quite movable depending on the striction coefficient of the particles and the stiffness of the polymer matrix. This points out the necessity to explicitly take into account the magnetoactive contribution when modeling the ME response of composite films and when interpreting the measurements on those objects.

Effect of Piezoelectric BaTiO3 Filler on Mechanical and Magnetoelectric Properties of Zn0.25Co0.75Fe2O4/PVDF-TrFE Composites

Polymer-based multiferroics, combining magnetic and piezoelectric properties, are studied experimentally-from synthesis to multi-parameter characterization-in view of their prospects for fabricating biocompatible scaffolds. The main advantage of these systems is facile generation of mechanical deformations and electric signals in response to external magnetic fields. Herein, we address the composites based on PVDF-TrFE polymer matrices filled with a combination of piezoelectric (BaTiO_3, BTO) and/or ferrimagnetic (Zn_0.25Co_0.75Fe₂O₄, ZCFO) particles. It is shown that the presence of BTO micron-size particles favors stripe-type structuring of the ZCFO filler and enhances the magnetoelectric response of the sample up to 18.6 mV/(cm∙Oe). Besides that, the admixing of BTO particles is crucial because the mechanical properties of the composite filled with only ZCFO is much less efficient in transforming magnetic excitations into the mechanical and electric responses. Attention is focused on the local surfacial mechanical properties since those, to a great extent, determine the fate of stem cells cultivated on these surfaces. The nano-indentation tests are accomplished with the aid of scanning probe microscopy technique. With their proven suitable mechanical properties, a high level of magnetoelectric conversion and also biocompatibility, the composites of the considered type are enticing as the materials for multiferroic-based polymer scaffolds.

Bioinspired Three-Dimensional Magnetoactive Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Bone tissue repair strategies are gaining increasing relevance due to the growing incidence of bone disorders worldwide. Biochemical stimulation is the most commonly used strategy for cell regeneration, while the application of physical cues, including magnetic, mechanical, or electrical fields, is a promising, however, scarcely investigated field. This work reports on novel magnetoactive three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds suitable for effective proliferation of osteoblasts in a biomimetic microenvironment. This physically active microenvironment is developed through the bone-mimicking structure of the scaffold combined with the physical stimuli provided by a magnetic custom-made bioreactor on a magnetoresponsive scaffold. Scaffolds are obtained through the development of nanocomposites comprised of a piezoelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and magnetostrictive particles of CoFe₂O₄, using a solvent casting method guided by the overlapping of nylon template structures with three different fiber diameter sizes (60, 80, and 120 μm), thus generating 3D scaffolds with different pore sizes. The magnetoactive composites show a structure very similar to trabecular bone with pore sizes that range from 5 to 20 μm, owing to the inherent process of crystallization of PVDF with the nanoparticles (NPs), interconnected with bigger pores, formed after removing the nylon templates. It is found that the materials crystallize in the electroactive β-phase of PVDF and promote the proliferation of preosteoblasts through the application of magnetic stimuli. This phenomenon is attributed to both local magnetomechanical and magnetoelectric response of the scaffolds, which induce a proper cellular mechano- and electro-transduction process.

Magnetic composites based on NR and strontium ferrite

Two types of composites based on natural rubber (NR) and strontium ferrite were tested in this study. Composites of the first type were prepared by incorporation of strontium ferrite in the concentration range ranging from 0 to 100 phr (parts per hundred rubber) into pure NR based rubber matrix, while with those of the second type, strontium ferrite was dosed in the same concentration level into NR based rubber batch with constant amount of carbon black — 25 phr. For rubber matrices cross-linking, a standard sulfur based curing system was used. This work is focused on the effect of magnetic filler content on physico-mechanical, magnetic and thermo-physical properties of composite materials. Subsequently, the cross-link density and the structure of the formed sulfidic cross-links were examined. The results showed that the cross-link density of both types of composites increased with the increasing content of magnetic filler, while the structure of the sulfidic cross-links was almost not influenced by the amount of strontium ferrite. Tensile strength of rubber composites with pure rubber matrix was slightly improved by the incorporation of ferrite, while in case of composites based on a carbon black batch, the incorporation of magnetic filler resulted in the decrease of this characteristic. The presence of magnetic filler in both types of composites leads to a significant increase of the remanent magnetic induction.

Reinforcement of Rubber Magnetic Composites with Zinc Salts of Acrylic and Methacrylic Acids

Strontium ferrite was compounded with acrylonitrile butadiene rubber to prepare rubber magnetic composites. For cross-linking of the prepared materials, peroxide curing systems consisting of dicumyl peroxide as curing agent and zinc salts of acrylic and methacrylic acids as co-agents were used. The amount of strontium ferrite was kept constant in all experiments, while the main objective of the work was to investigate the composition of curing system and both types of co-agents on the cross-linking, physical-mechanical, dynamic and magnetic properties of the rubber magnets. The results showed that the change in composition of curing system has significant influence on cross-link density and properties of the tested composite materials. With an increasing amount of zinc based co-agents, significant improvement of tensile strength was achieved. The application of zinc based co-agents in peroxide vulcanization of rubber magnetic composites leads to the preparation of rubber magnets with not only good magnetic properties, but also with improved physical-mechanical characteristics.

Enhanced dielectric and energy storage performance of surface treated gallium ferrite/polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposites
