Surface modified graphene/single-phase polyurethane elastomers with improved thermo-mechanical and dielectric properties

Preparation and Properties of SBR Composites Containing Graphene Nanoplatelets Modified with Pyridinium Derivative

The goal of this work was to study the effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) modified with ionic liquid (IL) on properties of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. GnPs were decorated with IL or were modified in bulk directly during rubber mix preparation. The ionic liquid used was 1-butyl-4-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate (BMPFB). The textural properties were studied to confirm surface modification of GnPs with BMPFB. In these investigations, the impact of the concentration of GnPs and the effect of the method of GnPs’ modification with IL on elastomers properties are described. Some thermal measurements (e.g., differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry) were conducted to characterize the thermal stability or the vulcanization process of the investigated samples. Complementary experimental techniques were used to investigate the properties of the obtained elastomers, specifically tensile testing, and electrical and barrier property measurements. The deposition of IL on the GnPs’ surface positively influenced the mechanical and barrier properties of elastomers. However, samples containing graphene nanoplatelets modified from solution were characterized by less electrical conductivity. SEM analysis was additionally performed to investigate GnPs’ dispersion within SBR composites.

Tailoring graphene reinforced thermoset and biothermoset composites

The surge of knowledge among researchers pertaining to the excellent properties of graphene has led to the utilisation of graphene as a reinforced filler in polymer composites. Different methods of graphene preparation, either bottom-up or top-down methods, are important requirements of starting materials in producing reinforced properties in the composites. The starting graphene material produced is either further functionalised or directly used as a filler in thermoset polymer matrixes. An effective interaction between graphene and polymer matrixes is important and can be achieved by incorporating graphene into a thermoset polymer matrix through melt mixing, solution mixing or in situ polymerisation processes. In addition, by taking into consideration the importance of green and sustainable composites, the details of previous work on graphene reinforced bio-thermoset polymer matrixes is discussed. The resultant mechanical and thermal properties of the composites were associated to the chemical interaction between the graphene filler and a thermoset matrix. Exploration for further variations of graphene polymer composites are discussed by taking the reinforcement properties in graphene composite as a starting point.

Polyurethane elastomer composites reinforced with waste natural cellulosic fibers from office paper in thermal properties

Polyurethane elastomer (PUE) composites were synthesized with a low additive content of waste natural cellulosic fibers from office paper. A new technology combining prepolymer method with physical blending and modification was adopted. The results showed that cellulosic fibers were covalently bonded to polyurethane molecular chains and served as a cross-linking agent making the degree of phase separation decrease. Even so, the lowest additive content of cellulosic fibers (1 wt%) in this work could make polyurethane still hold a certain degree of phase separation. Besides, thermal stability of polyurethane was improved from 288 to around 300 °C even at the low cellulosic fibers content. PUE with 3% cellulosic fibers had the better interfacial compatibility between cellulosic fibers and polyurethane causing the greater thermal reinforcement. PUE with 4% and 5% cellulosic fibers had the worse interfacial compatibility generating the better damping capacity indicating that cellulosic fibers could improve damping performance of polyurethane, especially polyurethane with 5 wt% fibers. It meant that cellulosic fibers had a potential application in damping materials.
