Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether the frequency of eating together is associated with the incidence of functional disability in older adults who live alone. METHODS This 6-year observational prospective cohort study utilised self-reported questionnaires. Data were drawn from the participants of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study project between 2016 and 2022. The participants were independent older adults aged ≥65 years living alone in Japan. The primary outcome was the incidence of functional disability during the follow-up period, with the self-reported frequency of eating together serving as the explanatory variable. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models after adjusting for confounders associated with incident functional disability. RESULTS Among the 7167 participants, the mean age at baseline was 75.3 ± 6.5 years and 69.2% were female. About, 12.8% of participants (n = 917) developed functional disabilities during the observation period. The incidence rates were 11.7% for 'every day', 11.3% for 'several times a week', 11.5% for 'several times a month', 12.7% for 'several times a year' and 19.0% for 'seldom'. The frequency of eating together 'seldom' was significantly associated with an increased incidence of functional disability (HR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.10-2.18). CONCLUSION Among older adults living alone, infrequent eating together ('seldom') was identified as a risk factor for developing functional disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have explored the longitudinal association between eating alone and depressive symptoms, and have focused on the effect of eating alone transition. This study aims to explore the longitudinal association between eating alone, its transition and depressive symptoms among two national surveys using a cohort study design. METHODS The participants aged ≥ 45 years were recruited for the 2016 to 2018 waves China Family Panel Data (CFPS) and 2015 to 2018 waves China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Eating alone was assessed by self-reported. Depressive symptoms were evaluated by Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Cox hazard regression was used to explore the associations between eating alone, its transition and depressive symptoms after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS A total of 21,476 participants were included in this study. The Cox model showed that compared with commensality, eating alone was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms, both in the CFPS, CHARLS and pooled analysis. In addition, compared with commensality consistently, the transition from commensality to alone and eating alone consistently were associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms. The sensitivity analyses showed that the association remained robust. CONCLUSIONS Eating alone and a change from commensality to eating alone were associated with higher risks of depressive symptoms among Chinese middle-aged and older adults in two cohorts. This study suggested that providing eating partners may be an effective intervention method to prevent depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty is a major geriatric syndrome that predicts increased vulnerability to minor stressor events and adverse outcomes such as falls, fractures, disability and death. The prevalence of frailty among individuals above the age of 65 varies widely with an overall weighted prevalence of 10.7%. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of prefrailty and frailty in community-dwelling older adults from the regions of Lolland-Falster, which is one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas of Denmark with lower income and lower life expectancy compared with the general Danish population. Moreover, the objective was to find selected individual characteristics associated with frailty. DESIGN An observational, cross-sectional registry-based population study with data from the regions of Lolland-Falster collected between February 2016 and February 2020. RESULTS The study included 19 000 individuals. There were 10 154 above the age of 50 included for analysis. Prevalence of frailty in the age group of 50-64 years was 4.7% and 8.7% in the age group of 65 years and above.The study demonstrates associations between frailty and high age, female gender, low education level, low income, smoking, living alone, frequency of seeing one's children and getting help when needed. These associations are comparable with findings from other studies. CONCLUSION The syndrome of frailty consists of not only physiological and medical issues but also education, life conditions such as living alone and living in poverty and how you evaluate your own health.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is defined as an age-related decline in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Eating alone has been linked to various health issues in older adults. This study investigated the relationship between eating alone and handgrip strength (HGS) in older adults using data from 7278 individuals (≥65 years) who participated in the 2014-2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. HGS was measured using a digital grip strength dynamometer, relative HGS was calculated by dividing HGS by body mass index, and dynapenia was defined as an HGS < 28 kg for men and <18 kg for women. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that women who ate two meals alone were more likely to exhibit dynapenia than those who never ate alone (odds ratio [OR], 1.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03-1.77). If the groups that never ate alone or ate one meal alone were combined as the reference group, the probability of dynapenia was higher in the combined groups that ate two or three meals alone (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.04-1.50). No association was observed between eating alone and dynapenia in men. This suggests that eating alone is a modifiable related factor of dynapenia in older women.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore all the relevant subtypes of cognitive frailty among Japanese community-dwelling older adults with multimorbidity. Moreover, it examined the associations between these potential subtypes of cognitive frailty and social relationships. This study targeted relevant cross-sectional data regarding community-based older adults with multimorbidity. It employed a person-centered method to perform a latent class analysis and explore the subtypes of cognitive frailty among older adults. Moreover, a multinominal logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the association between potential subtypes of cognitive frailty and social relationships. Data for 396 participants (mean age, 75.8 [SD, 7.3] years; 51.3% females) were analyzed. Three cognitive frailty subtypes were subsequently revealed: the robust group (42.0%), the group with partial cognitive frailty (38.6%), and the group with cognitive frailty (19.4%). People with high levels of social relationships were more likely to be in the robust and the partial cognitive frailty groups. This study identified different subtypes of cognitive frailty among multimorbid older adults and highlighted the significance of social relationships. These findings could serve as a reference for conceptualizing cognitive frailty through the person-centered method. Promoting a high level of social relationships could be useful to prevent the cognitive frailty among older adults with multimorbidity.
