Color filters and human photon emission: Implications for auriculomedicine

Mechanism of the Formation of Electronically Excited Species by Oxidative Metabolic Processes: Role of Reactive Oxygen Species

It is well known that biological systems, such as microorganisms, plants, and animals, including human beings, form spontaneous electronically excited species through oxidative metabolic processes. Though the mechanism responsible for the formation of electronically excited species is still not clearly understood, several lines of evidence suggest that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the formation of electronically excited species. This review attempts to describe the role of ROS in the formation of electronically excited species during oxidative metabolic processes. Briefly, the oxidation of biomolecules, such as lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids by ROS initiates a cascade of reactions that leads to the formation of triplet excited carbonyls formed by the decomposition of cyclic (1,2-dioxetane) and linear (tetroxide) high-energy intermediates. When chromophores are in proximity to triplet excited carbonyls, the triplet-singlet and triplet-triplet energy transfers from triplet excited carbonyls to chromophores result in the formation of singlet and triplet excited chromophores, respectively. Alternatively, when molecular oxygen is present, the triplet-singlet energy transfer from triplet excited carbonyls to molecular oxygen initiates the formation of singlet oxygen. Understanding the mechanism of the formation of electronically excited species allows us to use electronically excited species as a marker for oxidative metabolic processes in cells.

Ultraweak photon emission as a non-invasive health assessment: a systematic review

We conducted a systematic review (SR) of the peer reviewed scientific literature on ultraweak photon emissions (UPE) from humans. The question was: Can ultraweak photon emissions from humans be used as a non-invasive health assessment? A systematic search was conducted across eight relevant databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, BIOSIS, CINAHL, PSYCHINFO, All of Cochrane EBM databases, GIDEON, DoD Biomedical Research, and clinicaltrials.gov from database inception to October 2011. Of the 1315 studies captured by the search strategy, 56 met the inclusion criteria, out of which 1 was a RCT, 27 were CCT, and 28 were observational and descriptive studies. There were no systematic reviews/meta-analyses that fit the inclusion criteria. In this report, the authors provide an assessment of the quality of the RCT included; describe the characteristics of all the included studies, the outcomes assessed, and the effectiveness of photon emission as a potential health assessment tool. This report demonstrates that the peer reviewed literature on UPE and human UPE measurement in particular is surprisingly large. Most of the human UPE literature is of good to high quality based on our systematic evaluation. However, an evaluation tool for systematically evaluating this type of "bio-evaluation" methodology is not currently available and would be worth developing. Publications in the peer reviewed literature over the last 50 years demonstrate that the use of "off-the-shelf" technologies and well described methodologies for the detection of human photon emissions are being used on a regular basis in medical and research settings. The overall quality of this literature is good and the use of this approach for determining inflammatory and oxidative states of patients indicate the growing use and value of this approach as both a medical and research tool.

Effects of a Color Filter Used in Auriculomedicine on Ultraweak Photon Emission of the Human Body

CONTEXT

The human body emits ultraweak photons. It has been demonstrated that feedback regulation of ultraweak photon emission from the hand is detectable utilizing gelatin color filters in complete darkness. Color filters are commonly utilized in auriculomedicine diagnostic procedures based on the radial artery vascular autonomic signal.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the possibility of an effect by a dark-adapted red filter on (1) local ultraweak human photon emission using different anatomic locations, and (2) on systemic photon emission using one location for red filter exposure and another for photon emission recording.

DESIGN

Photon emission of abdomen, forehead, palm, and dorsum of the hand was recorded before and after the presence of a red filter. In addition, photon emission of forehead and dorsum of the hand was recorded before, during, and after the presence of the red filter close to the palm. In both instances, the filter was dark-adapted and placed in close proximity to, but not touching the skin of the dark-adapted subject. A low-noise, end window photomultiplier for recording ultraviolet and visible (200-650 nm) photon emission (with a very low background count rate) and designed for manipulation in three directions was situated in a dark room. The technology was utilized to record spontaneous photon emission of the abdomen, forehead, palm, and dorsum of the hand of one human male subject.

RESULTS

Data demonstrate that a dark-adapted subject responds in the total absence of light with a temporary increase in photon emission from the anatomic locations that had been exposed for 200 s at a distance of 3 cm to a dark-adapted red filter. Data from sequential time series suggest red filter initiation of a refractory emission reaction. Exposure of the palm to the red filter also evokes photon emission from the dorsum of the same hand and from the forehead. This response could be registered immediately after the beginning of the exposure. The stimulated emission is followed by a slow decrease of emission in the period after exposure to the filter.

CONCLUSION

Data suggest that red filter-stimulated photon emission response is systemic and rapid. Data imply an exchange of information vis-à-vis light from both hand and red filter. The mechanism of such interaction is currently speculation only.
