Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of copper, cobalt, nickel and iron in foodstuffs and vegetables with a new bis thiosemicarbazone ligand using chemometric approaches

Electrochemical sensor based on N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD nanomaterials: Application to simultaneous selective determination of Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ) irons released from iron supplement in simulated gastric fluid

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag-O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to detect Fe(II) and Fe(III) simultaneously. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD enhanced electrode performances because of the synergistic effect between N-CQDs, AgNPs and β-CD. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) released from four iron supplementations in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

Physico-analytical studies on some heterocyclic azo dyes and their metal complexes with some transition metals

In this investigation, the azo dyes; 2-(3′-phenyl-5′-pyrazolyl azo) schaffer acid (la) and 2-(3′-phenyl-5′-pyrazolyl azo) resorcinol (Ib); were prepared through diazotizing 3-phenyl-5-aminopyrazole (PAP) and coupling the resulting diazonium salt with Schäffer acid and resorcinol respectively. The prepared azo dyes are characterized using both IR spectra and the elemental analysis (C, H, N and S). The prepared azo dyes are used as chromogenic reagents for the spectrophotometric determination of copper (II), nickel (II), cobalt (II) and zinc (II) ions. The conditional acid dissociation constants of these azo dyes (la and Ib) and the stability constants of its metal ion complexes have been determined by spectro-analytical methods. The effect of pH, time, organic solvent and the foreign ions on the spectrophotometric determination of these ions and their complexes with the azo dyes under study were studied. The stoichiometric ratio (M:L) of the formed complexes was also determined. The molar absorptivity, the Sandell's sensitivity values, the obeyance of Beers law and the stability constants of the formed complexes have been also determined and discussed.

Influence of d-Electron Divalent Metal Ions in Complex Formation with L-Tartaric and L-Malic Acids

Binary complexes of α-hydroxy acids (L-Tartaric acid and L-Malic acid) with d-electron metal ions (copper, cobalt, nickel) were investigated. Potentiometric measurements have been performed in aqueous solution with computer analysis of the data for determination of the stability constants of complexes formed in the studied systems. The coordination mode of the complexes was defined using spectroscopic methods: electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), circular dichroism (CD), and infrared (IR). Results of the equilibrium studies have provided evidence for the formation of dimers with copper(II) ions and monomers with cobalt(II) and nickel(II) ions.

The use of complex formation manner for spectrophotometric analysis of gatifloxacin drug based on Co(II), Ni(II) and La(III) ions

Herein, a simple and accurate spectrophotometric method was developed to detect gatifloxacin (HGAT) in a pure and ophthalmic formulation. The method depends on complexation of HGAT with Co (II), Ni (II) and La(III) ions in ethanol medium at room temperature. The experimental conditions have been investigated to reach optimum conditions for HGAT-metal ions interaction, including detection of a suitable wavelength, medium pH, reaction time and reactants concentration. Moreover, the composition of these complexes in addition to their stability constants were also investigated and the result indicated that the molar ratio of HGAT: Metal ion is 1:1 for Ni (II) and La(III) ions and 1:2 for Co (II) ion. Beer's law plots were obeyed in the concentration ranges 18.77-150.16, 18.77-131.39 and 18.77-112.62 (μg mL-1) for Co(II), Ni(II) and La(III) ions interaction, respectively. The apparent molar absorptivity, Sandell's sensitivity, standard deviation, detection and quantification limits were calculated. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of HGAT in the bulk and ophthalmic formulation. The obtained results were compared statistically with other published methods and the results were in good agreement with those obtained by reported methods.

Sensitive detection of iron (II) sulfate with a novel reagent using spectrophotometry

In this study, a novel reagent was developed for sensitive detection of iron (II) sulfate, spectrophotometrically. A novel thio-anthraquinone derivative, 1-(Dodecylthio)anthracene-9,10-dione (3), was synthesized from the chemical reaction of 1-Chloroanthraquinone (1) and 1-Dodecanethiol (2) by an original reaction method and was used in the preparation of the novel reagent called Catal's reagent. A synthesized thio-anthraquinone analogue (3) was purified by column chromatography, and its chemical structure was characterized by spectroscopic methods such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), and ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectrophotometry. The chemical and molecular structure of the developed thio-antraquinone derivative (3) was illuminated using computational methods with the GaussView5 and Gaussian09 programs. Various solvents including ethanol, methanol, and acetonitrile were examined in the preparation of the reagent. A concentration range from 0.2 mg mL^-1 up to 10 mg mL^-1 of iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate solution in distilled water was prepared. The absorption spectra of Catal's reagent (0.816 mM) showed three peaks between 185 nm-700 nm of wavelength. However, after the reaction with H₂O₂ and the 30 mM trisodium citrate dihydrate mixture in the presence of an iron sulfate (II) solution, a single peak was observed, producing a stable and reddish/brownish homogenous solution (λ max = 304 nm). The following concentrations of iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate was examined using developed protocol and the reagent, and the concentrations were measured spectrophotometrically at 304 nm, 0.2-1 mg mL^-1. Absorbances of reaction mixtures of iron (II) sulfate remained stable up to 48 h. The results indicated that the novel Catal's reagent can be used for sensitive spectrophotometric detection of iron (II) sulfate in aqueous solutions.

Comparative studies on the adsorption of metal ions from aqueous solutions using various functionalized graphene oxide sheets as supported adsorbents

Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically modified by bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino groups (BPED) through a multistep procedure. For comparison, and to justify the grafting of BPED groups onto the GO sheets, the GO-based material obtained after each step was used as a solid phase adsorbent for removing Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) metal ions from aqueous solutions. The influence of metal ion concentrations, pH, contact time and temperature on their adsorption onto the GO-based adsorbents was investigated and the GO-EDA-CAC-BPED adsorbent showed the highest ability to adsorb Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) with a concentration of 250 mg.L^-1 at pH = 7. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the equilibrium adsorption capacities of these metal ions followed the order of Cu(II)>Ni(II)>Co(II) whatever the GO-based adsorbent. Moreover, to examine the underlying mechanism of the adsorption process, pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich or Roginsky-Zeldovich and intraparticle diffusion models were fitted to experimental kinetic data. It was shown that the pseudo-second-order model was the most appropriate one to describe the adsorption of heavy metal ions by the GO-based materials. Finally, it was demonstrated that their desorption/regeneration capacities were higher than 10 cycles, opening the path to the removal of metal ions from wastewater solutions.

Au nanoclusters/porous silica particles nanocomposites as fluorescence enhanced sensors for sensing and mapping of copper(II) in cells

In this work, we first report Au nanoclusters/porous silica particles nanocomposites as fluorescence enhanced sensors for selective and sensitive detection of Cu (II). As red-emitting GSH-protected Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) were self-assemble into porous silica particles (PSPs) after ultrasonic treatment. As a result, the Au NCs can be immobilized in the nano-channels of PSPs, which leads to the observation of an immobilized induced emission enhancement phenomenon. The photoluminscence (PL) intensity of the nanocomposites can enhance dozens of times compared with Au NCs. As a result, we obtain a novel PL enhanced sensor of Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites with excellent PL properties. The as-prepared Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites show good water-solubility, high stability, low toxicity, and exhibit a high PL quenching for reliable, sensitive and selective detection of Cu²⁺. The limit of detection can reach as low as 1 ppb. What is more, the Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites also show sensitive detection of Cu²⁺ in living cells. These properties provide the Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites with promising PL sensors for Cu²⁺ detection in various environmental and biological systems.

Carboxyl groups of citric acid in the process of complex formation with bivalent and trivalent metal ions in biological systems

Binary complexes of citric acid (H₃L - protonated form, H₂L and HL - partly protonated forms, L - fully deprotonated) with d- and f-electron metal ions were investigated. The studies have been performed in aqueous solution using the potentiometric method with computer analysis of the data, electron paramagnetic resonance, infrared, visible as well as luminescence spectroscopies. The overall stability constants of the complexes were determined. Analysis of the equilibrium constants of the reactions and spectroscopic data has allowed determination of the type of coordination and effectiveness of the carboxyl groups in the process of complex formation. On the basis of potentiometric titration for d-electron were found dimeric and monomeric type of complexes and for f-electron four type of complexes: MHL, ML, ML(OH) and ML(OH)₂.

Vortex-assisted low density solvent and surfactant based dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction for sensitive spectrophotometric determination of cobalt

This study describes the development of vortex-assisted low density solvent and surfactant based dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (VALS-DLLME) for Co(ii) prior to its spectrophotometric detection. The method consisted of the complexation of Co(ii) with pyrocatechol violet (PV) followed by the preconcentration of the Co(II)–PV complex using VALS-DLLME and then an absorption measurement at 600 nm. The optimum conditions for complex formation were a 1 : 3 mole ratio of Co(ii) and PV at pH 7.5, while the conditions for VALS-DLLME were 300 μL 1-dodecanol as extraction solvent, and 300 μL acetonitrile as dispersive solvent under a vortex for 20 s with the addition of cationic surfactant (0.02 mmol L⁻¹ CTAB). Under the optimum conditions, good linearity was in the range of 0.1–10 mg L⁻¹, the enrichment factor (EF) was 13.5 and the low limit of detection (LOD) was 0.04 mg L⁻¹. The method was applied to the analysis of Co(ii) in water, green leaf vegetable and vitamin B₁₂ samples. The proposed method provided good recoveries in the range of 86–104%, which were comparable to those obtained from flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

The formation of a Co(II)–PV complex and the VALS-DLLME procedure.

Fe3O4/hydroxyapatite/graphene quantum dots as a novel nano-sorbent for preconcentration of copper residue in Thai food ingredients: Optimization of ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid phase extraction

Fe₃O₄/hydroxyapatite/graphene quantum dots (Fe₃O₄/HAP/GQDs) nanocomposite was synthesized and used as a novel magnetic adsorbent. This nanocomposite was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and magnetization property. The Fe₃O₄/HAP/GQDs was applied to pre-concentrate copper residues in Thai food ingredients (so-called "Tom Yum Kung") prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Based on ultrasound-assisted extraction optimization, various parameters affecting the magnetic solid-phase extraction, such as solution pH, amount of magnetic nanoparticles, adsorption and desorption time, and type of elution solvent and its concentration were evaluated. Under optimal conditions, the linear range was 0.05-1500ngmL^-1 (R²>0.999), limit of detection was 0.58ngmL^-1, and limit of quantification was 1.94ngmL^-1. The precision, expressed as the relative standard deviation of the calibration curve slope (n=5), for intra-day and inter-day analyses was 0.87% and 4.47%, respectively. The recovery study of Cu for real samples was ranged between 83.5% and 104.8%. This approach gave the enrichment factor of 39.2, which guarantees trace analysis of Cu residues. Therefore, Fe₃O₄/HAP/GQDs can be a potential and suitable candidate for the pre-concentration and separation of Cu from food samples. It can easily be reused after treatment with deionized water.

Onsite-detection of barium and nickel from river, pond and tap water samples using gold nanoparticles as a chemical sensor

We report a simple, selective and sensitive colorimetric assay for onsite determination of Ni(II) and Ba(II) from river, pond and tap water samples using the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of malonate capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a chemical sensor. The method is based on the color change and red shift of LSPR absorption band in visible region that caused by the aggregation of NPs because of the coordination complex between Ba(II) and Ni(II) with carboxylate ions of malonate capped AuNPs. The determination of Ba(II) and NI(II) in a same sample was performed by masking one of the analyte at a time, EDTA was used to mask Ni(II) for detection of Ba(II) and dilute H₂SO₄ was used to mask the Ba(II) for detection of Ni(II). The linear range for quantitative determination of Ba(II) and NI(II) were found in the range of 15-500 and 10-500ngmL^-1 with a limit of detection of 5 and 3ngmL^-1, respectively. The advantages of the AuNPs based chemical sensor is found to be simple, rapid and sensitive as well as it can be applied at the sample source for trace detection of Ba(II) and Ni(II) in various environmental samples.
