Abstract
Salt stress is considered one of the major abiotic stresses that impair agricultural production, while boron (B) is indispensable for plant cell composition and has also been found to alleviate salt stress. However, the regulatory mechanism of how B improves salt resistance via cell wall modification remains unknown. The present study primarily focused on investigating the mechanisms of B-mediated alleviation of salt stress in terms of osmotic substances, cell wall structure and components and ion homeostasis. The results showed that salt stress hindered plant biomass and root growth in cotton. Moreover, salt stress disrupted the morphology of the root cell wall as evidenced by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis. The presence of B effectively alleviated these adverse effects, promoting the accumulation of proline, soluble protein, and soluble sugar, while reducing the content of Na+ and Cl- and augmenting the content of K+ and Ca2+ in the roots. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated a decline in the crystallinity of roots cellulose. Boron supply also reduced the contents of chelated pectin and alkali-soluble pectin. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis further affirmed that exogenous B led to a decline in cellulose accumulation. In conclusion, B offered a promising strategy for mitigating the adverse impact of salt stress and enhancing plant growth by countering osmotic and ionic stresses and modifying root cell wall components. This study may provide invaluable insights into the role of B in ameliorating the effects of salt stress on plants, which could have implications for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Introduction Adverse abiotic environmental conditions including excess salt in the soil, constantly challenge plants and disrupt the function of plants, even inflict damage on plants. Salt stress is one of the major limiting factors for agricultural productivity and severe restrictions on plant growth. One of the critical ways to improve plant salt tolerance is halotolerant bacteria application. However, few such halotolerant bacteria were known and should be explored furtherly. Methods Halophilic bacterium strain was isolated from saline soil with serial dilution and identified with classical bacteriological tests and 16S rRNA analysis. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) was used in this study to evaluate the potential effect of the bacteria. Results and discussion A halophilic bacterium strain GDHT17, was isolated from saline soil, which grows in the salinities media with 1.0%, 5.0%, and 10.0% (w/v) NaCl, and identified as Gracilibacillus dipsosauri. Inoculating GDHT17 can significantly promote ryegrass's seedling height and stem diameter and increase the root length, diameter, and surface area at different salt concentrations, indicating the significant salt stress alleviating effect of GDHT17 on the growth of ryegrass. The alleviating effect on roots growth showed more effective, especially on the root length, which increased significantly by 26.39%, 42.59%, and 98.73% at salt stress of 100 mM, 200 mM, and 300 mM NaCl when the seedlings were inoculated with GDHT17. Inoculating GDHT17 also increases perennial ryegrass biomass, water content, chlorophyll and carotenoid content under salt stress. The contents of proline and malonaldehyde in the seedlings inoculated with GDHT17 increased by 83.50% and 6.87%, when treated with 300 mM NaCl; however, the contents of MDA and Pro did not show an apparent effect under salt stress of 100 mM or 200 mM NaCl. GDHT17-inoculating maintained the Na+/K+ ratio in the salt-stressed ryegrass. The Na+/K+ ratio decreased by 26.52%, 6.89%, and 29.92% in the GDHT17-inoculated seedling roots treated with 100 mM, 200 mM, and 300 mM NaCl, respectively. The GDHT17-inoculating increased the POD and SOD activity of ryegrass seedlings by 25.83% and 250.79%, respectively, at a salt stress of 300 mM NaCl, indicating the properties of GDHT17, improving the activity of antioxidant enzymes of ryegrass at the salt-stress condition. Our results suggest that G. dipsosauri GDHT17 may alleviate salt stress on ryegrass in multiple ways; hence it can be processed into microbial inoculants to increase salt tolerance of ryegrass, as well as other plants in saline soil.

Abstract
Mineral nutrients spatiotemporally participate in the biosynthesis and accumulation of storage biopolymers, which directly determines the harvested grain yield and quality. Optimizing fertilizer nutrient availability improves the grain yield, but quality aspects are often underestimated. We hypothesize that extensive mineral nutrients have significant effects on the biosynthesis, content, and composition of storage proteins, ultimately determining physicochemical properties and food quality, particularly in the context of climate change. To investigate this, we hierarchized 16 plant mineral nutrients and developed a novel climate-nutrient-crop model to address the fundamental question of the roles of protein and starch in grain-based food quality. Finally, we recommend increasing the added value of mineral nutrients as a socioeconomic strategy to enhance agro-food profitability, promote environmental sustainability, and improve climate resilience.

Abstract
Konjac glucomannan (KGM) can act as a food additive to improve the quality of dough. The effects of KGM on the aggregation patterns and structural properties of weak, middle, and strong gluten were studied. We found that with a higher proportion of KGM substitution (10%), the aggregation energy of middle and strong gluten became lower than the control samples, while exceeding the control for weak gluten. With 10% KGM, aggregation of glutenin macropolymer (GMP) was enhanced for weak gluten, but suppressed for middle and strong gluten. The α-helix transferred to β-sheet in weak, but caused more random-coil structures for middle and strong gluten induced by 10% KGM. With 10% KGM, the network for weak gluten became more continuous, but severely disrupted for middle and strong gluten. Thus, KGM has distinct effects on weak, middle, and strong gluten, which related to the alteration of gluten secondary structures and GMP aggregation pattern.

Abstract
With the continuous increase in saline–alkali land, sustainable development of the global environment and ecology have been seriously affected. This study compared the absorption and accumulation patterns of 11 elements in different parts (roots, stems and leaves) of different leaf Na regulation strategies of the pioneer plant Chenopodiaceae in saline–alkali land and evaluated the effects of soil nutrient status and soil salinity on the distribution of plant elements. The results showed that the changes in the content of Ca, Mg and Na in plants are affected by the salt-tolerant type and on different parts. Soil salinity had no significant effect on element concentrations in different parts of plants. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed that the correlation between plants and soil elements was different, and different parts of plants had the characteristics of selective absorption of soil elements. The salt tolerance type and soil mineral element concentrations explained most of the variation observed in element concentrations in Chenopodiaceae plants; the soil salinity property played only a minor role. It was concluded that the genetic factors are the prerequisite in the composition pattern of leaf elements in Chenopodiaceae, and soil factors are the key to determining element accumulation. These conclusions provide an effective reference for evaluating plant breeding and its response to environmental change in saline–alkali arid areas in Hulunbuir grassland and other parts of the world.

Abstract
Reducing sodium in foods has attracted the attention of consumers, it is therefore necessary to explore sodium alternatives (i.e., low-sodium salt). However, the mechanism of low-sodium salt on gluten in dough remains unclear. Effect of low-sodium salt on the aggregation behaviors of gluten in dough was investigated and compared with those with NaCl and KCl in this study. The results showed that low-sodium salt enhanced gluten strength and prolonged gluten aggregation time. Low-sodium salt decreased the content of SDS extractable protein under non-reducing conditions. Low-sodium salt changed the spatial conformation of gluten by reducing β-turn structure and increasing β-sheet structure. Confocal laser scanning microscopy images indicated that low-sodium salt promoted the formation of a larger and dense gluten network. In summary, this study showed that low-sodium salt promoted the aggregation of gluten in dough, and the change of gluten structure explained this aggregation mechanism. Its mode of action was similar to NaCl and KCl, which provided a theoretical basis for the study of sodium substitutes in flour products.

Abstract
The area of salinized land is gradually expanding cross the globe. Salt stress seriously reduces the yield and quality of crops and endangers food supply to meet the demand of the increased population. The mechanisms underlying nano-enabled plant tolerance were discussed, including (1) maintaining ROS homeostasis, (2) improving plant's ability to exclude Na+ and to retain K+, (3) improving the production of nitric oxide, (4) increasing α-amylase activities to increase soluble sugar content, and (5) decreasing lipoxygenase activities to reduce membrane oxidative damage. The possible commonly employed mechanisms such as alleviating oxidative stress damage and maintaining ion homeostasis were highlighted. Further, the possible role of phytohormones and the molecular mechanisms in nano-enabled plant salt tolerance were discussed. Overall, this review paper aims to help the researchers from different field such as plant science and nanoscience to better understand possible new approaches to address salinity issues in agriculture.

Abstract
Trehalose plays a critical role in plant response to salinity but the involved regulatory mechanisms remain obscure. Here, this study explored the mechanism of exogenous trehalose-induced salt tolerance in tomato plants by the hydroponic test method. Our results indicated that 10 mM trehalose displayed remarkable plant biomass by improving growth physiology, which were supported by the results of chlorophyll fluorescence and rapid light-response curve. In the salinity environment, trehalose + NaCl treatment could greatly inhibit the decrease of malondialdehyde level, and it increases the contents of other osmotic substances, carbohydrates, K+, and K+/Na+ ratio. Meanwhile, trehalose still had similar effects after recovery from salt stress. Furthermore, trehalose pretreatment promoted trehalose metabolism; significantly increased the enzymatic activity of the trehalose metabolic pathway, including trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS), trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP), and trehalase (TRE); and upregulated the expression of SlTPS1, SlTPS5, SlTPS7, SlTPPJ, SlTPPH, and SlTRE under saline conditions. However, the transcriptional levels of SlTPS1, SlTPS5, and SlTPS7 genes and the activity of TPS enzyme were reversed after recovery. In addition, we found that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (O2 -) were accumulated in tomato leaves because of salt stress, but these parameters were all recovered by foliar-applied trehalose, and its visualization degree was correspondingly reduced. Antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, POD, and CAT) and related gene expression (SlCu/Zn-SOD, SlFe-SOD, SlMn-SOD, SlPOD, and SlCAT) in salt-stressed tomato leaves were also elevated by trehalose to counteract salt stress. Collectively, exogenous trehalose appeared to be the effective treatment in counteracting the negative effects of salt stress.

Abstract
Melatonin (MT) is a small molecule indole hormone that plays an important role in the regulation of biological processes and abiotic stress resistance. Previous studies have confirmed that MT promotes the normal development of plants under stress by mediating physiological regulation mechanisms. However, the physiological mechanism of exogenous MT regulating seed germination and seedling growth of wheat under salt stress is still unclear. In this study, NaCl stress decreased germination rate and inhibited seedling growth of wheat, but shoot length, root length, and plant weight of SM15 did not change significantly. The addition of 300 μM MT in the cultivation solution directly promoted the germination rate of SM15 and ZM18, and lateral root production, but decreased the germination rate of JM22 and inhibited the length of germ and radicle of three varieties under salt stress. For wheat seedling, application of MT could increase proline content, soluble protein, soluble sugar, Ca2+ content, and vital amino acid content in leaves to keep high water content, low level of H2O2 content, and low [K+]/[Na+] ratio. MT increased root vigor and [K+]/[Na+] ratio and decreased H2O2 content in root induced by salt stress. In conclusion, MT enhanced salt tolerance in wheat seeds and seedlings by regulating the synthesis of soluble protein and sugar, ion compartmentation in roots and leaves, enhancement of enzymatic systems, and changes in amino acid levels. Salt resistance varied with different varieties under the same environmental condition. SM15 was a higher salt-resistant variety and JM22 was a salt-sensitive one. In wheat production, the application of exogenous MT should consider the differences among varieties of wheat during the sowing and seedling stages.

Abstract
Durum wheat is a staple crop for the Mediterranean diet because of its adaptability to environmental pressure and for its large use in cereal-based food products, such as pasta and bread, as a source of calories and proteins. Durum wheat whole grains are also highly valued for their peculiar amount of dietary fiber and minerals, as well as bioactive compounds of particular interest for their putative health-beneficial properties, including polyphenols, carotenoids, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and phytosterols. In Mediterranean environments, durum wheat is mostly grown under rainfed conditions, where the crop often experiences environmental stresses, especially water deficit and soil salinity that may induce a hyperosmotic stress. In particular, changes in C and N accumulation due to these abiotic conditions, during grain filling, can influence starch and storage protein amount and composition in durum wheat caryopsis, thus influencing yield and quality traits. Recent advancements regarding the influence of water deficit and salinity stress on durum wheat are critically discussed. In particular, a focus on stress-induced changes in (a) grain protein content and composition in relation to technological and health quality; (b) starch and dietary fiber accumulation and composition; (c) phytochemical composition; (d) health-related grain micronutrient accumulation, such as Fe and Zn.

Abstract
Salt stress significantly contributes to major losses in agricultural productivity worldwide. The sustainable approach for salinity-accrued toxicity has been explored. The use of plant growth regulators/phytohormones, mineral nutrients and other signaling molecules is one of the major approaches for reversing salt-induced toxicity in plants. Application of the signaling molecules such as nitric oxide (NO) and ethylene (ETH) and major mineral nutrient such as nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) play significant roles in combatting the major consequences of salt stress impacts in plants. However, the literature available on gaseous signaling molecules (NO/ETH) or/and mineral nutrients (N/S) stands alone, and major insights into the role of NO or/and ETH along with N and S in plant-tolerance to salt remained unclear. Thus, this review aimed to (a) briefly overview salt stress and highlight salt-induced toxicity, (b) appraise the literature reporting potential mechanisms underlying the role of gaseous signaling molecules and mineral nutrient in salt stress tolerance, and (c) discuss NO and ETH along with N and S in relation to salt stress tolerance. In addition, significant issues that have still to be investigated in this context have been mentioned.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE Recent genomic and functional genomics analyses have substantially improved the understanding on gluten proteins, which are important determinants of wheat grain quality traits. The new insights obtained and the availability of precise, versatile and high-throughput genome editing technologies will accelerate simultaneous improvement of wheat end-use and health-related traits. Being a major staple food crop in the world, wheat provides an indispensable source of dietary energy and nutrients to the human population. As worldwide population grows and living standards rise in both developed and developing countries, the demand for wheat with high quality attributes increases globally. However, efficient breeding of high-quality wheat depends on critically the knowledge on gluten proteins, which mainly include several families of prolamin proteins specifically accumulated in the endospermic tissues of grains. Although gluten proteins have been studied for many decades, efficient manipulation of these proteins for simultaneous enhancement of end-use and health-related traits has been difficult because of high complexities in their expression, function and genetic variation. However, recent genomic and functional genomics analyses have substantially improved the understanding on gluten proteins. Therefore, the main objective of this review is to summarize the genomic and functional genomics information obtained in the last 10 years on gluten protein chromosome loci and genes and the cis- and trans-factors regulating their expression in the grains, as well as the efforts in elucidating the involvement of gluten proteins in several wheat sensitivities affecting genetically susceptible human individuals. The new insights gathered, plus the availability of precise, versatile and high-throughput genome editing technologies, promise to speed up the concurrent improvement of wheat end-use and health-related traits and the development of high-quality cultivars for different consumption needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The protein aggregation characteristics of three types of freshly milled wheat flour with high, medium or low gluten were investigated during 90 days of maturation. Changes in the content and particle size of the glutenin macropolymer (GMP), contents of sulfhydryl groups and disulfide bonds (SS), and secondary structure and molecular weight distribution of the protein were determined. RESULTS For high, medium and low gluten flour, GMP content increased to 22.25, 13.72 and 10.32 g kg-1 ; free sulfhydryl group content decreased by 5.5%, 4.1% and 4.4%; and SS content increased by 1.6%, 1.8% and 2%, respectively. The proportion of β-sheet and random coil increased, and the proportion of α-helix and β-turns decreased. The polymeric protein content increased, whereas that of gliadin decreased. CONCLUSION Protein aggregation mediated by SS cross-linking helped develop a stronger gluten network. The findings provide theoretical support for the changes in protein structure during flour maturation and also help to predict the quality of wheat flour and its products. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Intensive crop breeding has increased wheat yields and production in India. Wheat improvement in India typically involves selecting yield and component traits under non-hostile soil conditions at regional scales. The aim of this study is to quantify G*E interactions on yield and component traits to further explore site-specific trait selection for hostile soils. Field experiments were conducted at six sites (pH range 4.5-9.5) in 2013-14 and 2014-15, in three agro-climatic regions of India. At each site, yield and component traits were measured on 36 genotypes, representing elite varieties from a wide genetic background developed for different regions. Mean grain yields ranged from 1.0 to 5.5 t ha-1 at hostile and non-hostile sites, respectively. Site (E) had the largest effect on yield and component traits, however, interactions between genotype and site (G*E) affected most traits to a greater extent than genotype alone. Within each agro-climatic region, yield and component traits correlated positively between hostile and non-hostile sites. However, some genotypes performed better under hostile soils, with site-specific relationships between yield and component traits, which supports the value of ongoing site-specific selection activities.
