Abstract
Mycotoxins are representative contaminants causing food losses and food safety problems worldwide. Thymol can effectively inhibit pathogen infestation and aflatoxin accumulation during grain storage, but high volatility limits its application. Here, a thymol-betaine co-crystal system was synthesized through grinding-induced self-assembly. The THY-TMG co-crystal exhibited excellent thermal stability with melting point of 91.2 °C owing to abundant intermolecular interactions. Remarkably, after 15 days at 30 °C, the release rate of thymol from co-crystal was only 55%, far surpassing that of pure thymol. Notably, the co-crystal demonstrated the ability to bind H2O in the environment while controlling the release of thymol, essentially acting as a desiccant. Moreover, the co-crystals effectively inhibited the growth of Aspergillus flavus and the biosynthesis of aflatoxin B1. In practical terms, the THY-TMG co-crystal was successful in preventing AFB1 contamination and nutrients loss in peanuts, thereby prolonging their shelf-life under conditions of 28 °C and 70% RH.

Abstract
A head space-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometery (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method for the simultaneous analysis of pentene dimers from lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was proposed. A Doehlert design was performed; the conditions of the HS-SPME preconcentration step (extraction temperature, extraction time, sample amount, and desorption time) were optimized by response surface methodology, allowing defining the method operable design region. A quantitative method was set up using the multiple internal standard normalization approach: four internal standards were used, and the most suitable one was selected for area normalization of each external standard. The quantitative method was successfully validated and applied to a series of monocultivar EVOOs. This is the first paper in which a quantitative method using commercial standards has been proposed for the analysis of an important class of molecules of EVOO such as pentene dimers. The optimized method is suitable for routine analysis aimed at characterizing high quality EVOOs.

Abstract
One strategy to mitigate the emergence of bacterial resistance involves reducing antibiotic doses by combining them with natural products, such as trans-cinnamaldehyde (CIN). The objective of this research was to identify in vitro combinations (CIN + commercial antibiotic (ABX)) that decrease the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of seven antibiotics against 14 different Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria, most of them classified as ESKAPE. MIC values were measured for all compounds using the broth microdilution method. The effect of the combinations on these microorganisms was analyzed through the checkboard assay to determine the type of activity (synergy, antagonism, or addition). This analysis was complemented with a kinetic study of the synergistic combinations. Fifteen synergistic combinations were characterized for nine of the tested bacteria. CIN demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the MIC of chloramphenicol, streptomycin, amoxicillin, and erythromycin (94-98%) when tested on Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Pasteurella aerogenes, and Salmonella enterica, respectively. The kinetic study revealed that when the substances were tested alone at the MIC concentration observed in the synergistic combination, bacterial growth was not inhibited. However, when CIN and the ABX, for which synergy was observed, were tested simultaneously in combination at these same concentrations, the bacterial growth inhibition was complete. This demonstrates the highly potent in vitro synergistic activity of CIN when combined with commercial ABXs. This finding could be particularly beneficial in livestock farming, as this sector witnesses the highest quantities of antimicrobial usage, contributing significantly to antimicrobial resistance issues. Further research focused on this natural compound is thus warranted for this reason.

Abstract
This study aims to address the issue of environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable petroleum-based food packaging by exploring the application of biodegradable films. Film casting was employed to fabricate food packaging films from chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymers blended with moringa extract (MoE) and various concentrations of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs). The films were characterized through multiple techniques, including UV spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The study investigated the physicomechanical properties, water solubility, water vapor transmission rate, oxygen permeability, migration test, biodegradability, contact angle, anti-fogging, antibacterial and antifungal activity, and application of the films for food packaging. The results showed that blending CS/PVA films with MoE and MgO NPs significantly improved their mechanical properties. The highest tensile strength of 98 MPa was observed in the CPMMgO-0.5 film. The solubility of the films was low, with CPMMgO-0 and CPMMgO-0.25 demonstrating the lowest solubility as weight decreased by 3.41 % and 3.47 %, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate and oxygen permeability decreased with increasing MgO NP concentrations, with the CPMMgO-0.5 film exhibiting the lowest values. The films also demonstrated good biodegradability, anti-fogging ability, antibacterial and antifungal activity, and low water solubility, enabling bead encapsulation over 14 days in good condition. Moreover, the thermal stability of the films was improved, extending the shelf life of bread. Therefore, the fabricated films provide a promising alternative to non-degradable plastic packaging, which heavily contributes to environmental pollution.

Abstract
Polyelectrolyte multilayers are nanofilms with vast applications in numerous areas such as medicine and food industry. Recently, they have been getting a lot of attention as potential food coatings for the prevention of fruit decay during transportation and storage, and therefore the coatings need to be biocompatible. In this study, we fabricated thin films made of biocompatible polyelectrolytes, positively charged polysaccharide chitosan, and negatively charged carboxymethyl cellulose on a model silica surface. Typically, to enhance the properties of the prepared nanofilms, the first layer (precursor layer) of poly(ethyleneimine) is used. However, for the construction of completely biocompatible coatings, this could be problematic due to potential toxicity. This study offers an option for a viable candidate as a replacement precursor layer: chitosan itself was adsorbed from a more concentrated solution. In the case of chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose films, using chitosan over poly(ethyleneimine) as a precursor layer has shown a twofold increase in film thickness, as well as an increase in film roughness. In addition, these properties can be tuned by the presence of a biocompatible background salt (e.g., sodium chloride) in the deposition solution that has proven to change the film thickness and surface roughness depending on the salt concentration. Such a straightforward way of tuning the properties of these films combined with their biocompatibility makes this precursor material a prime candidate for use as a potential food coating.

Abstract
Novel solid-phase microextraction coatings based on the use of multiwalled carbon nanotube-cyclodextrin (MWCNT-CD) nanocomposites were developed for the determination of 16-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ultratrace levels in snow samples. The performance of both β- and γ-CD was tested to increase the detection capabilities towards the heaviest and most lipophilic compounds, i.e., five- and six-ring PAHs. To facilitate the interactions of MWCNTs with CDs, an oxidation procedure using both HNO3 and H2O2 was applied, obtaining superior results using MWCNTs-H2O2-γ-CD fiber. Detection and quantitation limits below 0.7 and 2.3 ng/L, RSD lower than 21%, and recoveries of 88(± 2)-119.8(± 0.4)% proved the reliability of the developed method for the determination of PAHs at ultratrace levels. The complexation capability of the γ-CD was also demonstrated in solution by NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy studies and at solid state by XRD analysis. Finally, snow samples collected in the ski area of Dolomiti di Brenta were analyzed, showing a different distribution of the 16 priority PAHs, being naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene the only compounds detected in all the analyzed samples.

Abstract
Estimating the number of COVID-19 cases in 2020 exacerbated the food contamination and food supply issues. These problems make consumers more concerned about food and the need to access accurate information on food quality. One of the main methods for preserving the quality of food commodities for export, storage, and finished products is food packaging itself. In the food industry, food packaging has a significant role in the food supply which acts as a barrier against unwanted substances and preserves the quality of the food. Meanwhile, packaging waste can also harm the environment; namely, it can become waste in waterways or become garbage that accumulates because it is nonrenewable and nonbiodegradable. The problem of contaminated food caused by product packaging is also severe. Therefore, to overcome these challenges of safety, environmental impact, and sustainability, the role of food packaging becomes very important and urgent. In this review, the authors will discuss in more detail about new technologies applied in the food industry related to packaging issues to advance the utilization of Smart Packaging and Active Packaging.

Abstract
Nowadays, the strong increase in products consumption, the purchase of products on online platforms as well as the requirements for greater safety and food protection are a concern for food and packaging industries. Active packaging brings huge advances in the extension of product shelf-life and food degradation and losses reduction. This systematic work aims to collect and evaluate all existing strategies and technologies of active packaging that can be applied in food products, with a global view of new possibilities for food preservation. Oxygen scavengers, carbon dioxide emitters/absorbers, ethylene scavengers, antimicrobial and antioxidant active packaging, and other active systems and technologies are summarized including the products commercially available and the respective mechanisms of action. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Mechanochemistry has become a sustainable and attractive cost-effective synthetic technique, largely used within the frame of crystal engineering. Cocrystals, namely, crystalline compounds made of different chemical entities within the same crystal structure, are typically synthesized in bulk via mechanochemistry; however, whereas the macroscopic aspects of grinding are becoming clear, the fundamental principles that underlie mechanochemical cocrystallization at the microscopic level remain poorly understood. Time-resolved in situ (TRIS) monitoring approaches have opened the door to exceptional detail regarding mechanochemical reactions. We here report a clear example of cocrystallization between two solid coformers that proceeds through the formation of a metastable low melting binary eutectic phase. The overall cocrystallization process has been monitored by time-resolved in situ (TRIS) synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction with a customized ball milling setup, currently available at μSpot beamline at BESSY-II, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The binary system and the low melting eutectic phase were further characterized via DSC, HSM, and VT-XRPD.

Abstract
The present study contributes the synthesis of active films with the incorporation of moringa extract (ME) into chitosan (CS)/guar gum (GG)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix (CGPM) by simple solvent casting technique. The effect of ME on the mechanical, thermal, structural and morphological properties of CGPM active films were investigated. ME has shown a marked influence on the optical, thermal properties and swelling behaviour of CGPM active films. The improvement in the tensile strength of CGPM-1 active film (53.7 MPa) was observed compared to control CS/GG/PVA (CGP) film. DSC study revealed that glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) decreased with the addition of ME in the CGP matrix, which confirmed the miscibility among the components of active films. There was an improvement in the thermal stability of the CGPM active films. The FTIR study confirmed the molecular interaction between ME and CS/GG/PVA matrix. The XRD analysis showed a decrease in crystallinity with an increase in the ratio of CS for CGPM active films. The CGPM active films were an excellent barrier to UV- light and have exhibited a decrease in moisture adsorption and water solubility compared to CGP control film. The inclusion of ME in the CGP matrix leads to the formation of a dense compact surface, which in turn enhanced hydrophobicity of active films. The CGPM active films showed minimum WVP, OP values and overall migration values were within the limits of 10 mg/dm2. It was also observed that CGPM active films effectively inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus bacteria. These findings suggest CGPM active films are biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic and hence can find application as food packaging materials.

Abstract
Naphthalenediimide derivates are a class of π-conjugated molecules largely investigated in the literature and used as building blocks for metal-organic frameworks or coformers for hydrogen-bond-based cocrystals. However, their tendency to establish halogen-bond interactions remains unexplored. By using a crystalline engineering approach, we report here four new cocrystals with N,N'-di(4-pyrydyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxidiimide and diiodo-substituted coformers, easily obtained via a mechanochemical protocol. Cocrystals were characterized via NMR, electron ionization mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystallographic structures were then finely examined and correlated with energy framework calculations to understand the relative contribution of halogen-bond and π-π interactions toward framework stabilization.

Abstract
Thermoplastic starch (TPS) films filled with chitosan nanocapsules (CN) containing essential oils (EO) were prepared aiming active packaging. Two different EOs were studied: Ho wood (H) and Cinnamon (C). Besides, different capsules concentrations were investigated (1, 3, and 5 wt%), and the films were evaluated by chemical structure, thermal stability, crystallinity, water vapor permeability, antimicrobial assays, and potential application for strawberry packaging. The TPS/CN-Ho wood films showed a strong interaction between chitosan-starch, mainly for 3 and 5 wt%, confirmed by XRD. The FT-Raman spectra of TPS/CN-Cinnamon film indicated that Cinnamon EO quickly migrated to starch films, probably due to the new crystal structure, named C-type, affecting the film's water permeability. The addition of 1 and 3 wt% CN loaded with Ho wood or Cinnamon EO to the films decreased the water permeability. 3 wt% CN was the optimum concentration to inhibit the Escherichia coli or Bacillus subtillis growth on the films, confirming their biological activity. The films' preservation properties were evaluated using strawberries, and films with 1 or 3 wt% loaded-CN could extend the strawberries' shelf life without fungi contamination. The developed TPS films can be used as active food packaging or other films for biomedical or pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
With an increasing interest in cocrystals due to various advantages, demand for large-scale cocrystallization techniques is rising. Solution cocrystallization is a solvent-based approach that utilizes several single-component crystallization concepts as well as equipment for generating cocrystals. Solution-based techniques can produce cocrystals with reasonable control on purity, size distribution, morphology, and polymorphic form. Many of them also offer a scalable solution for the industrial production of cocrystals. However, the complexity of the thermodynamic landscape and the kinetics of cocrystallization offers fresh challenges which are not encountered in single component crystallization. This review focuses on the recent developments in different solution cocrystallization techniques for the production of pharmaceutically relevant cocrystals. The review consists of two sections. The first section describes the various solution cocrystallization methods, highlighting their benefits and limitations. The second section emphasizes the challenges in developing these techniques to an industrial scale and identifies the major thrust areas where further research is required.
