Abstract
This study investigates the presence of non-phthalate plastic additives (NPPAs), emerging contaminants increasingly used as alternatives to hazardous phthalates, in various water sources. To address their potential environmental and health risks, two complementary extraction methods were developed: direct immersion solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography coupled to Q-Orbitrap (DI-SPME-GC-Q-Orbitrap) and salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (SALLE-UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap). The complementary use of these two methods makes it possible to analyse a larger number of analytes, 27 in particular, enabling the detection of 19 and 23 NPPAs by GC and LC, respectively (15 compounds were simultaneously monitored by both techniques), with limits of quantification (LOQs) ranging from 0.05 to 4.0 μg/L. Both methods demonstrated satisfactory trueness and precision in accordance with analytical validation standards. The application of these methods to water samples revealed the widespread presence of NPPAs, particularly 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (HCPK) and triacetin (TA), which were detected at concentrations up to 5.33 μg/L. Toxicity assessments based on LD50 values indicated that these compounds pose significant environmental and health risks, surpassing some restricted phthalates in toxicity. These findings underscore the urgent need to monitor and regulate NPPAs as hazardous materials to safeguard water quality and public health. This work highlights the utility of green analytical methods for evaluating emerging pollutants in water systems, aligning with the principles of sustainable environmental management.

Abstract
Chemicals from food contact materials migrate into food, leading to a possible health risk for consumers. Other than their bulk material food contact materials often contain printing inks and adhesives. Multi-analyte methods for a large amount of these chemicals in food have not been developed, hampering food safety. A liquid chromatography and a gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method to analyze in total 110 food contact chemicals from printing inks and adhesives used on plastic food contact materials was developed and fully validated. Fifty-two food samples packaged in printed and/or multilayered materials were tested using this method. Thirty-nine samples contained at least one of the analytes and 16 different analytes were detected. One finding of caprolactam (at 28 mg/kg) was above the legislative limit. One potential hazard for consumer health was detected, as one sample contained 2-methyl-5-nitroaniline, a potententially carcinogenic compound.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop an analytical method for m-xylenediamine (m-XDA), an aldehyde scavenger, in various food simulants and food matrices. The analysis was performed using HPLC-UV (270 nm) with a Capcell pak MGII C18 column (4.6 × 250 mm, 5 μm). The method validation encompassed evaluations of specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ) across five food simulants and six food matrices. In the calibration curve range of 1-100 μg/mL, excellent linearity was observed with R2 ≥ 0.9992. The accuracy and precision were within the ranges of 86.4-98.6% and 0.7-2.9 relative standard deviation (RSD%), respectively. The LOD and LOQ were in the ranges of 0.26-0.56 μg/mL and 0.79-1.71 μg/mL, respectively. The significance lies in the development of analysis methods for each food matrix, not only for smart packaging simulant analysis. This research makes it well-suited for smart packaging safety management.

Abstract
Many nations have food contact material (FCM) legislation purporting to protect citizens from hazardous chemicals, often specifically by regulating genotoxic carcinogens. Despite such regulations, cancers that are associated with harmful chemical exposures are highly prevalent, especially breast cancer. Using the novel Key Characteristics of Toxicants framework, Kay et al. found 921 substances that are potential mammary carcinogens. By comparing Kay et al.'s chemicals list with our own Database on migrating and extractable food contact chemicals (FCCmigex), we found that 189 (21%) of the potential mammary carcinogens have been measured in FCMs. When limiting these results to migration studies published in 2020-2022, 76 potential mammary carcinogens have been detected to migrate from FCMs sold in markets across the globe, under realistic conditions of use. This implies that chronic exposure of the entire population to potential mammary carcinogens from FCMs is the norm and highlights an important, but currently underappreciated opportunity for prevention. Reducing population-wide exposure to potential mammary carcinogens can be achieved by science-based policy amendments addressing the assessment and management of food contact chemicals.

Abstract
The development of multi-analyte methods is always challenging, especially when the target compounds derive from many different substance classes. We present an approach to analyze up to 60 additives - mainly plasticizer - including 28 phthalates and 32 further compounds such as sebacates, adipates, citrates, fatty acid amides, among others. Our multi-analyte multi-technique approach combines a single sample preparation step with one GC-MS/MS and two LC-MS/MS quantification methods. We demonstrate the applicability for beverages by a full validation in tomato juice matrix and determining the recoveries in apple juice, mulled wine, and spirits. The approach features good reproducibilities and high precisions with limits of quantification in the low µg·kg-1 food range, enabling the method to be applied for enforcement and especially for exposure investigations. In course of the BfR MEAL study, 16 pooled beverage samples were examined and - if at all - analytes were found only in very low concentrations.

Abstract
This paper discusses the framework of China's food safety standards and provides a brief overview of the problems and developmental characteristics of food safety in China. The composition and characteristics of China's food safety standards are revealed by an analysis of the changes in China's general food standards, an overview of the characteristics of the hygiene requirements in the production and operation process, and an introduction to food product and test method standards. In conclusion, Chinese food safety standards are still being improved, but they must also be effectively implemented and followed up in real time in order to continuously improve the quality of food and reduce food safety incidents. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Phthalates or phthalic acid esters (PAE) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (DEHA) are ubiquitous chemicals often used as plasticisers and additives in many industrial products and are classified as both persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and new emerging pollutants (NEPs). Exposure to these chemicals, especially through inhalation, is linked to a wide range of negative health effects, including endocrine disruption. Air particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm can be enriched with PAEs and DEHA and if inhaled can cause multi-system human toxicity. Therefore, proper monitoring of PAEs and DEHA in PM is required to assess human exposure to these pollutants. In this work, we developed and validated a new and sensitive gas-chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) method for targeted analysis of PAEs including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (DEHA), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP), in PM. Analytical aspects including sample preparation steps and GC-HRMS parameters, e.g., quadrupole isolation window, to enhance method sensitivity have been assessed. The estimated limit of detection (LODs) of target PAEs and DEHA ranged from 5.5 to 17 pg μL-1, allowing their trace-level detection in PM. Extraction efficiencies of 78-101% were obtained for the target compounds. Low DMP and DEP extraction efficiencies from the spiked filter substrates indicated that significant losses of higher volatility PAEs can occur during the sample collection when filter-based techniques are used. This work is the first targeted method based on GC-Orbitrap MS for PAEs and DEHA in environmental samples. The validated method was successfully applied for the targeted analysis of PAEs and DEHA in PM2.5 samples from the eighth most populous city in Brazil, Curitiba. This work is the first to report DBP, DEHA, DEHP, and DOP in urban PM from Brazil. The observed concentrations of PAEs (up to 29 ng m-3) in PM2.5 from Curitiba may not represent the extent of pollution by these toxic compounds since the analysed samples were collected during a COVID-19 restriction when anthropogenic activities were reduced.

Abstract
Food contact materials (FCMs) and food contact articles are ubiquitous in today's globalized food system. Chemicals migrate from FCMs into foodstuffs, so called food contact chemicals (FCCs), but current regulatory requirements do not sufficiently protect public health from hazardous FCCs because only individual substances used to make FCMs are tested and mostly only for genotoxicity while endocrine disruption and other hazard properties are disregarded. Indeed, FCMs are a known source of a wide range of hazardous chemicals, and they likely contribute to highly prevalent non-communicable diseases. FCMs can also include non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), which often are unknown and therefore not subject to risk assessment. To address these important shortcomings, we outline how the safety of FCMs may be improved by (1) testing the overall migrate, including (unknown) NIAS, of finished food contact articles, and (2) expanding toxicological testing beyond genotoxicity to multiple endpoints associated with non-communicable diseases relevant to human health. To identify mechanistic endpoints for testing, we group chronic health outcomes associated with chemical exposure into Six Clusters of Disease (SCOD) and we propose that finished food contact articles should be tested for their impacts on these SCOD. Research should focus on developing robust, relevant, and sensitive in-vitro assays based on mechanistic information linked to the SCOD, e.g., through Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) or Key Characteristics of Toxicants. Implementing this vision will improve prevention of chronic diseases that are associated with hazardous chemical exposures, including from FCMs.

Abstract
Polyesters (PES) and polystyrene (PS) are among the most used plastics in the production of food contact materials (FCM). The existence of compounds that could migrate from these materials into food requires a constant analytical control to ensure the safety of consumers due to consumption. It also implies a significant research challenge for their identification and quantification. One of the most important groups of known FCM migrants are the substances known as oligomers. PES and PS oligomers have long been suspected to possess some toxicological effects. The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the European Food Safety Authority alerted recently to the potential carcinogenicity of styrene, with its oligomers consequently being also in the spotlight. At the same time, PES cyclic oligomers are categorized as having Cramer III toxicity. Many recent works on the occurrence of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and PS oligomers in FCM and food have been published. The oligomeric chemical analysis requires the use of demanding analytical strategies to address their different physicochemical characteristics (melting points, octanol/water partition coefficients, and solubility properties). Chromatographic methods are normally preferred due to the intrinsic complexity of the target matrices, but the reduced amount of reliable analytical standards still hinders the widespread screening analysis of oligomers in food. This work presents the most relevant recent studies and analytical methodologies used in the analysis of PET, PBT, and PS oligomers in food and FCM, as well as current and future challenges.

Abstract
The residual acrylamide in food paper packaging can be transferred into water and food, which will cause harmful effects on human beings. In this paper, a rapid and easily available fluorescent probe based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/Eu (Ⅲ) nanocomposites was designed to detect the residue acrylamide with high sensibility. The probe could respond in 1 min. The concentration of acrylamide was linearly correlated to the fluorescence intensity of the probe at the emission wavelength of 615 nm in the concentration range of 0.1–100 μmol/L. The limit of detection (LOD) of the probe was 0.085 μg/L, which is lower than the guideline value of the European Union, the U.S. EPA, and the WHO. An experiment was performed to simulate the acrylamide migrating from food-contacting paper materials to different foods, including waterborne food, alcohol beverage, acidic food, and greasy food. The recoveries and RSDs of acrylamide in all samples indicated that the CMC/Eu (Ⅲ) fluorescent probe was efficient for acrylamide detection. The possible mechanism of the probe for acrylamide detection involved both dynamically quenching and static quenching by forming of non-fluorescent substances.

Abstract
Extraction of photoinitiators (PIs) from food paper packages is difficult since they normally hide inside multiple ink layers. A one-step FastPrep-based extraction in combination with GC-MS was developed to simultaneously measure 18 PIs in food paper packaging materials. FastPrep-based extraction enabled direct and efficient release of PIs from raw paperboard in a minute without additional procedures. It was simple, high-throughput, consuming less solvent and not requiring heat or radiation. GC-MS using selected ion monitoring provided identification of PIs with high selectivity. The LODs and LOQs for 18 PIs ranged from 0.060 to 0.614 mg/kg, and 0.197-2.027 mg/kg, respectively. The method was successfully applied for various real samples, and the spiked recoveries using different real sample matrices ranged from 93.3% to 110.1%. The developed method can thus be used for the quality control of PI residues in paper packaging materials of food products.

Abstract
Dichloroanilines and phthalic acid esters (phthalates) are food contaminants, stable in solution even at high temperatures, which exhibit considerable toxic effects, while acting as endocrine disruptors. In the present study, a quick and easy UHPLC-MS/MS method for simultaneously analyzing two dichloroanilines (3,4-DCA and 3,5-DCA) and six phthalates (DMP, DnBP, BBP, DnOP, DEHP, and mBP) in commercial rice samples was developed, validated, and applied. For the cleanup process, the methodology of quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) was applied, whereas different dispersants (GCB, C18, and PSA) were tested. What was developed and presented had limits of detection ranging from 0.017 up to 0.12 mg/kg, recoveries (trueness) below 120%, and relative standard deviations (RSD; precision) <15% for all target analytes, whilst no significant matrix effects occurred for all analytes. It was determined that the rice samples analyzed using this developed technique did not contain any of the two dichloroaniline compounds (3,4-DCA and 3,5-DCA) nor two of the six phthalate (DMP and mBP) compounds analyzed, while the levels of other phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DnBP and DnOP) were within the legal limits. The current method ensures a fast and easy approach for the high-throughput quantification of the selected food contaminants in rice.

Abstract
A GC-HRMS analytical method for the determination of 60 migrant substances, including aldehydes, ketones, phthalates and other plasticizers, phenol derivatives, acrylates, and methacrylates, in plastic food contact materials (FCM) has been developed and validated. The proposed method includes migration tests, according to Commission Regulation (EU) 10/2011, using four food simulants (A, B, C, and D1), followed by vortex-assisted liquid–liquid extraction (VA-LLE) and GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode, with a resolving power of 30,000 FWHM and a mass accuracy ≤5 ppm. The method was validated, showing satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.98 from 40 to 400 µg L−1), limits of quantification (40 µg L−1), precision (RSD, 0.6–12.6%), and relative recovery (81–120%). The proposed method was applied to the analysis of field samples, including an epoxy-coated tin food can, a drinking bottle made of Tritan copolyester, a disposable glass made of polycarbonate, and a baby feeding bottle made of polypropylene, showing that they were in compliance with the current European regulation regarding the studied substances.
