Abstract
This Schiff base chemosensor (SNN) detected dual ions, Al3+ and Zn2+ ions selectively. Fluorescence spectrum investigations showed that Al3+ ions increased fluorescence intensity, notably at 493 nm. Introducing Zn2+ ions caused a significant blue shift of roughly ∼65 nm at a wavelength of 434 nm, resulting in a notable change in fluorescence intensity. When binding Al3+/Zn2+ ions, the SNN receptor uses three methods. Inhibition of photoinduced electron transfer (PET), excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), and restriction of CN isomerization. The jobs plot method found that SNN + Al3+ and SNN + Zn2+ complexations had a 1:1 stoichiometry. DFT, LC-HRMS, and 1H NMR titration confirm this conclusion. The probe SNN's limit of detection (LOD) for Al3+/Zn2+ ions was 3.99 nM and 1.33 nM. Latent fingerprint (LFP), food samples, pharmaceutical products, and E. coli pathogen bio-imaging have all used the SNN probe to identify Al3+ and Zn2+ ions.

Abstract
The development of reliable probe technology for the detection of bisulfite (HSO3-) in situ in food and biological samples is contributing significantly to food quality and safety assurance as well as community health. In this work, a responsive probe, EHDI, is developed for ratiometric fluorescence detection of HSO3- in aqueous solution, meat samples, and living cells. The probe is designed based on the HSO3- triggered 1,4-addition of electron deficit C = C bond of EHDI. As a result of this specific 1,4-addition, the π-conjugation system was destructed, resulting in blue shifts of the emission from 687 to 440 nm and absorption from 577 to 355 nm. The probe has good water solubility, high sensitivity and selectivity, allowing it to be used for imaging of HSO3- internalization and production endogenously. The capability of probe EHDI for HSO3- was then validated by traditional HPLC technology, enabling accurately detect HSO3- in beef samples. The successful development of this probe thus offers a new tool for investigating HSO3- in situ in food and biological conditions.

Abstract
Herein, for the first time, we have successfully constructed a novel near-infrared (NIR) emission fluorescent probe Dpyt for ultrafast detecting (within 5 s) bisulfate and organic amines based on a 1,2-dihydrocyclopenta[b]chromene-barbiturate conjugation system. Upon addition of bisulfate or organic amines, Dpyt displayed a distinct color change from blue to colorless or from purple to blue, respectively, suggesting that the Dpyt can be used to detect two analytes by the naked eye. Based on quantum chemistry calculations, the fluorescence quenching of Dpyt after the addition of HSO3- is caused by the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process of the adduct Dpyt-HSO3-. The fluorescence enhancement of Dpyt caused by most organic amines is due to the enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process of deprotonated Dpyt. Notably, Dpyt can be applied for detecting HSO3- in actual food samples such as red wine and sugar, as well as for imaging of HSO3- and representative propylamine in living cells. And more importantly, indicator labels constructed by filter paper loaded with Dpyt can visually monitor the freshness of salmon in real-time by daylight and fluorescence dual-mode. The comparison with national standard method of China manifests that indicator labels are a valid tool to assess the freshness of seafood.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al), a non-essential element in living systems, can potentially cause chronic toxicity. Therefore, it is crucial to have a specific and sensitive method for detecting Al3+ in order to assess its risk to life. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent probe (IV) based on bromoflavonol. Upon binding to Al3+, probe IV exhibits a blue shift in emission and enhanced fluorescence, making it suitable for Al3+ detection. Our UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra demonstrate that probe IV has high selectivity and sensitivity towards Al3+ while being immune to interference from other metal ions. Through fluorescence titration, we determined that the detection limit (LOD) of probe IV for Al3+ is 1.8 × 10-8 mol/L. Job's curve and 1 H NMR titration further confirmed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry between probe IV and Al3+. Additionally, using DFT (Density Functional Theory), we calculated the energy gap difference between IV and IV + Al3+ and found that the complex formed by probe IV and Al3+ is more stable than IV alone. We successfully detected Al3+ in tap water and river water from the middle regions of the Han River, achieving recoveries of over 96% using this probe. This demonstrates its potential for quantitative detection of Al3+ in environmental water samples. Moreover, we successfully used the probe for imaging Al3+ in MG63 cells, suggesting its potential application in biological imaging.

Abstract
Bisulfite (HSO3-) and sulfite (SO32-) are commonly employed in food preservatives and are also significant environmental pollutants. Thus, developing an effective method for detecting HSO3-/SO32- is crucial for food safety and environment monitoring. In this work, based on carbon dots (CDs) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90), a composite probe (named CDs@ZIF-90) is constructed. The fluorescence signal and the second-order scattering signal of CDs@ZIF-90 are employed to ratiometricly detect HSO3-/SO32-. This proposed strategy exhibits a broad linear range for HSO3-/SO32- determination (10 µM to 8.5 mM) with a limit of detection of 2.74 μM. This strategy is successfully applied for evaluating HSO3-/SO32- in sugar with satisfactory recoveries. Therefore, this work has uniquely combined the fluorescence and second-order scattering signals to establish a novel sensing system with a wide linear range, which is applicable for ratiometric sensing of HSO3-/SO32- in actual samples.

Abstract
Three simple dipodal artificial acyclic symmetric receptors, SDO, SDM, and SDP, driven by positional isomerism based on xylelene scaffolds were designed, synthesized, and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopy techniques. Probes SDO, SDM, and SDP demonstrated selective detection of Ag+ metal ions and amino acid l-histidine in a DMSO-H2O solution (1:1 v/v, HEPES 50 mM, pH = 7.4). The detection of Ag+ metal ions occurred in three ways: (i) inhibition of the photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) process, (ii) blueshifted fluorescence enhancement via the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process, and (iii) restricted rotation of the dangling benzylic scaffold following coordination with a Ag+ metal ion. Job's plot analysis and quantum yields confirm the binding of probes to Ag+ in 1:1, 1:2, and 1:2 ratios with LODs and LOQs found to be 1.3 μM and 3.19 × 10-7 M, 6.40 × 10-7 and 2.44 × 10 -6 M, and 9.76 × 10-7 and 21.01 × 10-7 M, respectively. 1H NMR titration, HRMS, ESI-TOF, IR analysis, and theoretical DFT investigations were also used to establish the binding stoichiometry. Furthermore, the probes were utilized for the detection of Ag+ ions in water samples, food samples, soil analysis, and bacterial imaging in Escherichia coli cells and a molecular logic gate was constructed.

Abstract
Despite their status of being widely used as food additives, bisulfite (HSO3-)/sulfite (SO32-) can pose serious health risks when they are excessively added. Therefore, it is vital to develop a new method for detecting HSO3-/SO32- in foodstuff. In this paper, a benzopyran-benzothiazole derivative (probe DCA-Btl) with near-infrared emission was designed and synthesized by constructing a "push-pull" electronic system. DCA-Btl can selectively recognize HSO3-/SO32- via a colorimetric and fluorescence dual channel in DMF/PBS (1:1, v/v, pH = 8.4), and the emission wavelength of DCA-Btl can reach 710 nm. The fluorescence quenching of DCA-Btl after recognition of HSO3- is attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process of the adduct DCA-Btl-HSO3- as evaluated by the DFT/TD-DFT method. In addition, DCA-Btl has many advantages, including a large Stokes shift (95 nm), good anti-interference ability, and little cytotoxicity. What's more, DCA-Btl has been successfully applied for the detection of HSO3-/SO32- in actual water samples and food samples such as sugar, red wine, and biscuits with satisfying results, as well as for fluorescent imaging of HSO3- in living MCF-7 cells.

Abstract
Heavy metals are essential for a wide range of biological processes, including the growth and reproduction of cells, synthesis of biomolecules, many enzymatic reactions, and the body’s immunity, but their excessive intake is harmful. Specifically, they cause oxidative stress (OS) and generate free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in metabolism. In addition, the accumulation of heavy metals in humans can cause serious damage to different organs, especially respiratory, nervous and reproductive and digestive systems. Biologically, metal chelation therapy is often used to treat metal toxicity. This process occurs through the interaction between the ligand and a central metal atom, forming a complex ring-like structure. After metals are chelated with appropriate chelating agents, their damage in metabolism can be prevented and efficiently removed from the body. On the other hand, heavy metals, including Zn, Fe and Cu, are necessary for the suitable functioning of different proteins including enzymes in metabolism. However, when the same metals accumulate at levels higher than the optimum level, they can easily become toxic and have harmful effects toward biomolecules. In this case, it induces the formation of ROS and nitrogen species (RNS) resulting in peroxidation of biological molecules such as lipids in the plasma membrane. Antioxidants have an increasing interest in many fields due to their protective effects, especially in food and pharmaceutical products. Screening of antioxidant properties of compounds needs appropriate methods including metal chelating assay. In this study, a general approach to the bonding and chelating properties of metals is described. For this purpose, the basic principles and chemical principles of metal chelation methods, both in vivo and in vitro, are outlined and discussed. Hence, in the main sections of this review, the descriptions related to metal ions, metal chelating, antioxidants, importance of metal chelating in biological system and definitions of metal chelating assays as widely used methods to determine antioxidant ability of compounds are provided. In addition, some chemical properties, technical and critical details of the used chelation methods are given.
