Characterization of multilayered glitter particles using synchrotron FT-IR microscopy

Forensic Discrimination of Drug Powder Based on Drug Mixing Condition Determined Using Micro Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

The quantitative evaluation of the drug mixing condition was conducted for application in the forensic discrimination of drug powders using micro Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Bromhexine hydrochloride (BHCl) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) were used as the simulated drug and additive, respectively. Equal masses of two chemicals were (1) simply mixed, (2) homogenized using agate mortar, or (3) dissolved in methanol and dried, and then (4) homogenized using agate mortar. The mixed powders dispersed on BaF₂ plates were subjected to mapping analysis of micro FT-IR spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation (SR) or globar light in transmission mode with aperture sizes of 2.5 x 2.5 and 10 x 10μm², and x-y scanning steps of 2.5 and 10 μm, respectively. The areas of the vibration bands specific to BHCl (C-N bending) and PHBA (C=O stretching) were converted to the molar contents (C_BHCl, C_PHBA), and the relative content ratio (RCR: C_PHBA/[C_BHCl + C_PHBA]) was used as one mixing parameter. The resulting two-dimensional distribution map provided the relative spatial localizations of the two species, and frequency histograms with a horizontal axis of RCR were plotted to evaluate the RCR distribution. The percentage frequency of the extreme value in which RCR was 0 or 1 (%EV) was used as one mixing index. After excluding the extreme values, the coefficient of variation (CV) of the RCR distribution was used as another mixing index. The differentiation among four mixing modes could be evaluated from the standpoint of %EV and CV, and the discrimination capacity by SR instrument was superior to that by globe light instrument.

Preparation of urea-containing starch-castor oil superabsorbent polyurethane coated urea and investigation of controlled nitrogen release

With the aim of improving water absorption and controlled release performance of current controlled release fertilizers, a novel composite coating method for superabsorbent-polyurethane coated urea (SAPCU) was developed. Superabsorbent-polyurethane (SAPU) composite coating material was successfully formed through an insitu reaction, where castor oil polyurethane (COP) and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) were connected through urethane bonds with an optimal reaction ratio of SAP and PAPI as 2.5:1 (w w^-1). The ideal nitrogen release and water absorption characteristics of SAPCU were achieved by adjusting the amount of COP and SAPU. The SAPCU had a high total nitrogen content (40.23-42.14 %), large swelling ratios (120-160 g water/g SAPU), and long nitrogen release period (60-150 days).

SEM-EDS analysis and characterization of glitter and shimmer cosmetic particles

Perpetrators are often aware of commonly used trace evidence in forensic casework, thereby limiting potential transfer during a crime. With the lack of common evidence left behind at a crime scene, consideration of alternative potential evidence is necessary. Glitter and shimmer particles from cosmetic products will potentially transfer from or onto an offender, crime scene, or victim. The transfer of these cosmetic particles during a close personal attack generally goes unnoticed, and thus offenders are unaware of the use of such evidence that may associate a suspect to a crime scene. In this study, 36 glitter and 40 shimmer samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) whereby characterization schemes were developed to help identify particles potentially transferred during close personal assaults. Samples were classified into 7 glitter and 4 shimmer groups based on elemental composition, and the developed classification models showed high potential to accurately associate or differentiate unknown cosmetic particles collected from a potential crime scene, with cross-validation accuracies ranging from 94 to 100%. Pearson results showed no overlap between inter- and intra-sample correlations, thereby suggesting low possibility of false sample identification. Analysis of variance with post-hoc Tukey test was subsequently performed to determine how well detected elements and element peak ratios differentiated the glitter and shimmer samples, respectively.

Is this your glitter? An overlooked but potentially environmentally-valuable microplastic

As microplastic pollution evolved to a well-established research field, microplastic scientists started to explore new avenues in the field. Yet, while a multitude of different types of microplastics (microbeads, fibres, fragments) have been well-documented in microplastic literature, our analysis of this literature shows that glitter particles have been overlooked by the field. However, due to the presence of glitter-based research in forensic science, we explore the idea that glitter may have the potential to act as "flag items" - or markers - of a likely source, due to the often complex and individual composition of glitter particles compared to traditional microplastics, such as microbeads. As such, this article demonstrates glitter has insofar been overlooked as a microplastic particle, and demonstrates that glitter may have an important role in explaining microplastic pollution dynamics from source to sink.
