Abstract
Aim It was the aim of this study to assess static postural control characteristics in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) of different ages using a force platform. A relationship was also established between static postural control parameters and age in this study. Methods A total of 706 participants with T2D were included in this study. The participants were stratified into three age groups: Group 1 (<60 years old), Group 2 (60-70 years old), and Group 3 (>70 years old). Static postural control assessment during two-leg stance was performed on a force platform by all participants. The center of pressure (CoP)-related parameters were measured under two stance conditions (eyes open and closed). Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied to explore the difference among the different age groups. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the relation between age and static postural control parameters. Results Group 1 (<60 years old) had significantly less CoP total tracking length (TTL), sway area (SA), and CoP velocity along the Y direction (V-Y) under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions compared with Group 2 (60-70 years old) and Group 3 (>70 years old). Group 1 (<60 years old) had significantly less CoP maximum sway length along the X direction (MSL_X) and longer tracking length each area unit (TTL/SA) under the eyes-open condition compared with Group 2 (60-70 years old) and Group 3 (>70 years old). There was a significantly positive correlation between age and the most static postural parameters such as CoP TTL, SA, MSL-X, MSL-Y, and V-Y. There was a significantly negative correlation between age and TTL/SA. Conclusion This study suggested that older T2D participants had worse static postural control ability than younger ones. Most static postural parameters presented a significant correlation with age; the higher the age, the worse the static postural control.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the effect of sensory perturbations on static postural control in older people with type 2 diabetes mellitus by comparing postural outcomes of people with and without diabetic neuropathy using a Wii Balance Board (WBB). MATERIALS AND METHODS Static postural balance assessments were performed in 31 participants: nine with type 2 diabetes mellitus; 12 with diabetic neuropathy; and 10 non-diabetic controls. Participants stood on the WBB under sensory perturbations (visual and proprioceptive). Body balance was analysed using centre of pressure ellipse area, mean velocity, and sample entropy. The effects of within-participant factors, sensory perturbations and the between-participants factor 'group' on outcomes were analysed using a multivariate analysis of variance model. RESULTS Type 2 diabetes mellitus participants with and without neuropathy showed altered postural performance under sensory perturbations compared to non-diabetic participants. Moreover, participants with diabetic neuropathy showed impaired postural performance when one perceptual system was disturbed. Finally, participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus without neuropathy decreased their postural performance when both sensory disturbances were present. CONCLUSIONS The Wii Balance Board can be a useful alternative for balance impairment screening related to diabetic neuropathy and contribute as an affordable source of insight in early interventions in integral diabetes care.Implications to rehabilitationOlder people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy depend on visual and somatosensory cues to keep their static postural balance.Static balance assessment using the Wii Balance Board allows the identification of alterations in postural performance in participants with diabetes.This low-cost method used can be considered as a complement to integral diabetes care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In physical therapy, postural tests are frequently used to diagnose neuropathies, particularly in diabetic individuals. This study aims to develop a method based on the analysis of time series that allows discriminating between healthy and diabetic subjects with or without a neuropathic condition. RESEARCH QUESTION Do features obtained from time series corresponding to postural tests allow us to reliably discriminate between healthy, diabetic and neuropathic patients? METHODS In this study, 32 people participated in the healthy, diabetic, and neuropathic categories (11, 9, and 12, respectively). The data was collected by positioning each participant on a Wii Balanced Board platform, under 8 different conditions. The analyzed time series are sensed by devices that capture variations in the subject's center of pressure when subjected to a test on different conditions over a short period of time. The method proposed considers statistical techniques used for characterizing the time series combined with machine learning techniques to classify the individual's profile into one of the three categories mentioned. The classification is supported by an underlying probabilistic model, based on the characteristics of the time series, generating average curves for each class, which are then used by the classification methods. RESULTS The empirical results include classification models for each class, obtaining a performance (F-score) over 98%. In addition, other models considering the particular conditions to which the subject is exposed during the test are developed, revealing that the conditions of eyes open and eyes closed show the highest levels of discrimination to classify participants into one of the three class categories. SIGNIFICANCE These results suggest a test protocol simplification and, at the same time, that the proposed method based on the analysis of the time series associated with the test used is highly predictive and may reliably complement or substitute a questionnaire-based diagnosis.

Abstract
Vascular endothelium insults caused by high serum glucose levels affect the oxygen supply to tissues, via the microvascular endothelium, resulting in an increased perfusion heterogeneity. These insults may lead to the underuse of blood capillaries, while other vessels are overused and effectively overload their oxygen supply capacity, which eventually causes damages to distal parts of the peripheral nervous system. Therefore, the proprioceptive and exteroceptive feedback information will be gradually lost and contribute to a mobility reduction. This study aims to assess the efficacy of whole-body vibration (WBV) associated with strength training (ST) on lower-limb blood flow and mobility in older adults with type 2 diabetes (DM2). Methods and analyses: This is a protocol (1st version) for Pa single-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial guided by the SPIRIT guidelines. Our sample will consist of 51 older adults with DM2 randomly allocated to three groups: low frequency WBV (16−26 Hz) associated to ST (G1), WBV sham (G2) and nonintervention control (G3). The study protocol is set for a 12-week (three times per week) schedule. Primary outcomes: skin temperature using infrared thermographic imaging (ITI); mean peripheral arterial blood flow velocity (MBF) by a handheld Doppler ultrasound (DU), and functional mobility by Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Secondary outcomes: quasi-static posture using the DX100 BTS Smart optoelectronic system, and plantar pressure and body balance using the MPS stabilometric platform. Data will be collected and analyzed at baseline and post-intervention, considering p-value < 0.05 level of significance. The analyses will also be conducted with an intention-to-treat method and effect size. Dissemination: All results will be published in peer-reviewed journals as well as presented in conferences.

Abstract
UNLABELLED WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by problems of inattention and impulsive hyperactivity in children. Equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAATs) have been used as alternative non-pharmacological intervention option in patients with ADHD. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Nowadays, more studies of high methodological quality are needed to determine whether EAAT is an effective intervention for the treatment in children with ADHD. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Between 15 and 40 min of rising horses, 8-32 total sessions, for 4-32 weeks, seem to be beneficial to reduce the symptoms of ADHD. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder characterized by problems of inattention and impulsive hyperactivity. Equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAATs) have become an emerging non-pharmacological intervention option in patients with ADHD. AIM To perform a systematic review of updated literature about EAAT in children with ADHD. METHOD A systematic review was performed until 28 November 2019, in four electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (a) intervention programme, with pre- and post-data, based on EAAT, (b) children with ADHD and (c) articles written in English. RESULTS A total of 9 articles were found that meet the inclusion criteria. The evidence level was C for 7 studies and B for 2 studies. The level of conclusion was 3. DISCUSSION There are few studies with high methodological quality, and there is a high heterogeneity in the variables included, what make that the level of evidence and conclusion are low. CONCLUSION There is no account with enough studies of high methodological quality to determine whether EAAT is an effective intervention for the treatment in children with ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fall-risk assessments for patients with diabetes fail to consider reactive responses to balance loss. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using a simple clinical tool to evaluate the impact of diabetes and fall history on reactive balance in older adults. METHODS We recruited 72 older adults with and without diabetes. Postural perturbations were applied by a waist-mounted spring scale. Stepping thresholds (STs) in the anterior and posterior directions were defined as the lowest spring-loads that induced a step. Balance was assessed via the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Standing Balance Test, and lower extremity sensation was assessed using vibratory perception threshold and Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments. Fall history over the past year was self-reported. Cox regressions and analysis of variance were used to compare hazard rates for stepping and observed STs between groups. RESULTS Anterior STs were elicited in 42 subjects and posterior STs in 65 subjects. Hazard rates for posterior ST were significantly affected by diabetes, with greater hazards for fallers with diabetes versus control fallers and nonfallers, after accounting for balance and sensory loss. For those who stepped, ST was lower in the posterior direction for the diabetes group. Additionally, anterior but not posterior ST was lower in all fallers vs all nonfallers. CONCLUSIONS The waist-mounted spring scale is a clinically implementable device that can assess ST in older adults with diabetes. Using the device, we demonstrated that ST was affected by diabetes and could potentially serve as a fall-risk factor independent of balance or sensory loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retropulsion is an impairment of body orientation against gravity in the sagittal plane. In a Delphi study, the Scale for Retropulsion (SRP) was developed with a high level of expert agreement. OBJECTIVE To assess the clinimetric properties of the German SRP in patients with neurological disorders. METHODS The SRP was applied to 70 hospitalized patients with neurological disorders (stroke, critical illness neuropathy and/or myopathy, Parkinson syndromes). Internal consistency was determined with the Cronbach ɑ. Test-retest and interrater reliabilities were evaluated with the weighted kappa, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots. The construct validity was evaluated with Spearman correlation. RESULTS The median (interquartile range) SRP score was 5 (3-8) and ranged from 0 to 22 (total scale range: 0 to 24). The SRP had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach ɑ = 0.875) and good to excellent test-retest reliability (weighted kappa = 0.957, ICC = 0.957) and interrater reliability (weighted kappa = 0.837, ICC = 0.837). Analysis of construct validity resulted in good correlations with other clinical balance scales (rSp > 0.80), and fair to moderate correlations with posturographic measures (rSp = 0.27-0.56) and the subjective postural vertical error in the sagittal plane (rSp = -0.325, p = 0.012) as well as the range in the frontal plane (rSp = 0.359, p=0.007). The SRP discriminated between patients classified with and without retropulsion by an independent clinical expert (p<0.001). CONCLUSION The SRP provides a valid and reliable bedside test to quantify retropulsion in individuals with neurological disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the impact of the Peripheral Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) on the postural and functional balance and quality of life of Brazilian older adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study. Sixty older men and women (60-79 years) were divided into three groups: control, DM without and with PDN. The following parameters were evaluated: anthropometry; quality of life; postural balance (BESTest); functional balance in force plate (NeuroCom Balance). RESULTS PDN group presented significant differences compared with the other groups, with the worst performance in quality of life than DM2 without PDN in: sensory functioning (p = 0.030); past and future (p = 0.036); death and dying (p = 0.035). Postural balance deficit in the total score (p = 0.025) and biomedical constraints section (p = 0.043) of the BESTest, compared with DM2 without PDN (p = 0.007). In the functional balance (Neurocom), PDN group presented a worse performance in the time spent on the left side (p = 0.030) than the control group. During step up over test, the control group performed the task faster than the group with PDN (p = 0.004). CONCLUSION This study showed that neuropaths presented worse physical performance and postural balance deficits, sensorial limitations, affecting the daily tasks and, as a consequence, decreasing the quality of life in Brazilian older adults.
