Safety perceptions of older adults on an urban greenway: Interplay of the social and built environment

Neighborhood safety perception and depressive symptoms in China: a moderated mediation relationship

PURPOSE

Despite rich data on neighborhood safety perception's role in shaping depressive symptoms, a comprehensive view of this dynamic interplay remains a frontier. This study seeks to unravel the intricate interplay of neighborhood safety perception and depressive symptoms, utilizing the lens of social safety theory.

METHODS

Employing the 2016 and 2020 waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this study utilized ordered logistic regression (ologit) for statistical analysis. The approach encompassed descriptive analysis of variables, Spearman's correlation analyses to explore associations between variables, and a moderated mediation analysis. Sensitivity analyses were also conducted to affirm the robustness of findings against model assumptions and data processing techniques.

RESULTS

The study uncovered a significant negative correlation between neighborhood safety perception and depressive symptoms (Direct effect =  - 0.338, Z =  - 2.564, p = 0.010). A key finding was the steeper slope of the relationship between neighborhood safety perception and neighborhood relation perception among individuals with a higher perception of neighborhood environment quality. As neighborhood environment quality perception increases, the strength of the mediated negative impact on depressive symptoms intensifies (- 0.102 >  - 0.132 >  - 0.162).

CONCLUSION

This study offers a comprehensive moderated mediation model that establishes a novel connection between neighborhood safety perception and depressive symptoms. It integrates the complexities of social safety theory and social information processes, revealing key strategies such as enhancing perceived neighborhood environment quality and neighborhood relationship quality.

Exploring Restrictions to use of community greenways for physical activity through structural equation modeling

Public health problems caused by rapid urbanization have attracted increasing amounts of attention. Existing studies show that improving the frequency and duration of physical activity among urban residents can effectively reduce their disease risk. A community greenway, as a green space for public activity directly serving community residents, is one of the best spatial place for bringing health benefits to people. Although the scale and scope of greenway construction have been increasing in recent years, the utilization rate of some greenways is not high for various reasons, restricting the extent to which people engage in healthy physical activities in greenway spaces. In this study, the greenway of Nancheng Community in Wenjiang District, Chengdu city, China was selected as the object of study, and structural equation modeling was conducted to explore the objective environmental factors and individual characteristics acting as barriers to use of the community greenway by the population for physical activity. The results show that user experience, the greenway landscape, and safety and accessibility are important factors that restrict people's willingness engage in physical activity in the community greenway environment. The results of this study provide a direction for further consideration of ways to enhance people's willingness to make use of greenways for physical activity, and further provide a theoretical basis for the healthy design and transformation of community greenway spaces.

Better Understanding Wearable Activity Monitor Use and Non-Use Among Older Adults: A Qualitative Study

We used qualitative methods to better understand wearable activity monitor (WAM) use and its relationship with physical activity (PA) among older adults. Four focus groups, stratified by current/past ("ever") WAM users and "never" WAM users, were conducted with 57 participants aged ≥60 years. Data were coded with deductive and inductive approaches. Among ever WAM users, those with low pre-WAM PA levels reported higher PA related to WAM use while those with high pre-WAM PA levels reported they used WAM for tracking and monitoring their activity. Ever WAM users were motivated to increase PA through rewards and social support. Many never WAM users reported that WAM was unnecessary. WAM may be helpful for some older adults to increase their PA, particularly those who are motivated by setting and achieving PA goals. The results could help develop strategies to overcome barriers to WAM adoption and promote WAM use among older adults.

The Incidence of Falls and Related Factors among Chinese Elderly Community Residents in Six Provinces

This cross-sectional study classified the factors related to falls among residents ≥ 60 years old in China in order to provide evidence for the prevention of falls in the elderly. A total of 2994 participants were enrolled, and the correlations between social demography, physical health, self-health management awareness, family support, and fall risk were analyzed. Factors influencing falls were classified by location, cause, and the activity during falls. Suffering from osteoarthropathy (OR = 1.761, 95% CI: 1.234-2.513, p < 0.05), depression or anxiety (OR = 1.896, 95% CI: 1.331-2.700, p < 0.001), household size > 2 (OR = 1.806, 95% CI: 1.042-3.130, p < 0.05), and poor self-assessed health (OR = 1.478, 95% CI: 1.107-1.972, p < 0.01) were risk factors. Higher participation in community health programs (OR = 0.522, 95% CI: 0.298-0.912, p < 0.05) and spousal support (OR = 0.909, 95% CI: 0.841-0.981, p < 0.05) were protective factors. Falls were divided into the following categories: stairs/hallway (vision, attention problems), bath/toilet (vision, attention problems, slipping), indoor housework (dizziness, leg weakness), and outdoor activities (attention, surface problems). While acknowledging that the personal physical and mental health of the elderly may lead to falls, community support, accelerated transformation of housing, and the construction of barrier-free environments play an important role in reducing the risk of falls.

Urban Green Space and Subjective Well-Being of Older People: A Systematic Literature Review

A growing number of articles have identified and reported the benefits and importance of urban green spaces for improving human well-being, but there is a significant knowledge gap regarding the impact of urban green spaces on the subjective well-being of older adults. The literature search (August 2015-August 2022) was derived from two major scientific databases, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. As a result, 2558 articles were found, 1527 of which were retrieved from WOS and the rest from Google Scholar. Bibliometric methods and VOSviewer software were used to screen and organize the articles in the relevant fields. Finally, 65 articles met the review criteria. The included studies aim to capture the benefits of various features of urban green spaces in meeting or enhancing the subjective well-being needs of older adults. The results of our review further support the existence of a strong link between older adults' subjective well-being and various features of urban green spaces, providing new insights for future in-depth reexamination and policy development. Furthermore, the relationship between urban green spaces and older adults' subjective well-being depends not only on the urban green spaces themselves but also on the characteristics of the older adult population that uses them.

The Use of Urban Parks by Older Adults in the Context of Perceived Security

The perception of urban greenery is determined by many aspects, including the personal security of different groups of city dwellers. The objective of this study was to investigate if there are differences between the sense of security of older adults and other groups of urban park users, and which factors play an important role in the evaluation of personal security and thus determine the use (or not) of parks. A survey questionnaire was administrated to a sample of randomly selected park users in Poland (n = 394), including seniors (s = 69). The results show statistically significant differences in security perception between respondents under the age of 60 and those over the age of 60 in the case of all questioned factors. At the same time, all of them are important for a sense of security in older adults. This knowledge is crucial for designing more inclusive and age-friendly urban parks, which should meet the needs and expectations of older adults and encourage them to engage in more activity.

Neighbourhood walkability and mortality: Findings from a 15-year follow-up of a nationally representative cohort of Canadian adults in urban areas

BACKGROUND

Using a nationally representative cohort of Canadian adults, we assessed associations between neighbourhood walkability and cause-specific mortality and investigated whether they differed by socioeconomic status.

METHODS

The study population was drawn from the 2001 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort, which contains individual-level data from a random sample of 20% of Canadian households mandated to complete the long-form census. We included those aged ≥ 25 years at baseline who lived in urban and suburban areas. The national death registry was used to ascertain annual vital status. Linkages to annual income tax data provided place of residence. The Canadian Active Living Environments, a national index that summarizes walkability across Canadian neighbourhoods, was assigned to individuals' residential history. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess associations between walkability and cause-specific mortality.

RESULTS

A total of 1.8 million participants (52.5% female) accrued 27.3 million person-years and 265 710 deaths during the 15-year follow-up. The adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for living in a highly walkable neighbourhood relative to living in the least walkable neighbourhoods was associated with a 9% (HR: 0.91 [0.88, 0.95]) and 3% (HR: 0.97 [0.94, 0.99]) reduced risk of cardiovascular and all non-accidental mortality, respectively. The strongest benefits of walkability were found among individuals within the lowest education and household income categories, and who lived in the most deprived neighbourhoods. There were no significant associations (most [class 5] versus least [class 1] walkable HR: 0.84 [0.61-1.16]) seen for accidental traffic mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

Canadian adults who live in walkable neighbourhoods have lower rates of cardiovascular and non-accidental mortality, with the greatest benefits seen in those from the lowest socioeconomic groups.

Measuring Achievement, Affiliation, and Power Motives in Mobility Situations: Development of the Multi-Motive Grid Mobility

The current study introduces the Multi-Motive Grid Mobility (MMG-M) in an age-stratified sample (N = 206) that aims to disentangle six motive components - hope of success, hope of affiliation, hope of power, fear of failure, fear of rejection, and fear of power - in mobility-related and mobility-unrelated scenarios. Similar to the classical Multi-Motive Grid (MMG), we selected 14 picture scenarios representing seven mobility and seven non-mobility situations. The scenarios were combined with 12 statements from the MMG. Both the MMG-M and MMG were assessed to allow comparability between psychometric criteria. The results of confirmatory factor analyses yielded a good model fit for a six-factor solution with an additional mobility factor for the MMG-M. Internal consistency of the items was similar to the MMG. Lastly, we investigated associations between the motive components and mobility-related variables. We found that risk awareness was positively related to all fear components in both mobility and non-mobility scenarios. Most importantly, physical constraint was positively associated with fear of rejection and fear of power in mobility situations underlining the importance to create support systems to reduce these concerns in people's everyday lives.
