'A healthy lifestyle is a journey': exploring health perceptions and self-defined facilitators to health through photo-elicitation

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to explore health perceptions and self-defined facilitators to health in general population. An additional aim of the study was to assess if these perceptions were connected with the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

DESIGN

We applied photo-elicitation method by gathering original photographs and narratives (captions) via social media and e-mails. Participants (N = 50) were asked to answer the question: 'What does it mean to be healthy?'. Data were collected online in Poland. We generated and interpreted the main themes associated with common perceptions of health and self-defined facilitators to health using polytextual thematic analysis.

RESULTS

The health perception themes were, health as: a 'long journey'; keeping balance; and self-acceptance. The main facilitators to health were: enjoyment of activities that are part of a healthy lifestyle; planning time for rest; contact with nature, and supportive relationships. Participants' perceptions of how Covid-19 impacted on their health differed.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings provide evidence for individual health perceptions and self-defined facilitators to health and can support the development of future health interventions.

Unravelling the complexity of the relationship between social support sources and loneliness: A mixed-methods study with older adults

Loneliness is an increasingly significant social and public health issue in contemporary societies. The available evidence suggests that social support is one of the key psychosocial processes for the reduction and prevention of loneliness. This study investigated the role played by sources of social support in the experience of social and emotional loneliness, identifying seven sources of support split between family (spouse/partner, children, grandchildren, siblings) and non-family (friends, neighbours). The study population comprised people aged 65 years and over living in Spain, with a partner (without cohabiting children), alone or in a nursing home. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining data from a survey involving 887 participants (quantitative phase) and data from semi-structured interviews with 30 older adults (qualitative phase). The relationship between the various sources and loneliness was analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) for the survey data and thematic analysis for the qualitative information. The results from both phases of the study suggest different association dynamics between sources of social support and the social and emotional dimensions of loneliness. Lower levels of emotional loneliness were related to support from the following sources: spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings and friends. Lower levels of social loneliness were related to support from the following sources: spouse, grandchildren, siblings and friends. In contrast, greater levels of emotional loneliness were related to support from neighbours and greater levels of social loneliness were related to support from children. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the association between social support and loneliness and suggest that interventions aimed at reducing loneliness could be more effectively targeted by considering the specific effects of support derived from different sources.

Effects of Wisdom on Mental Health in Old Age: Exploring the Pathways Through Developmental Tasks Attainment and Self-Rated Health

Purpose

A number of studies indicate a relationship between wisdom and mental health in older adults, which can be explained by different pathways. However, the role of developmental task accomplishment, and of self-rated health in the relationships between wisdom and mental health in later life remain unclear. The aim of the current study is to explore the structure of the relationships between wisdom, developmental task attainment, self-rated health, and positive and negative mental health outcomes (viz. wellbeing and depressive symptoms) in older adults.

Methods

The study included 381 Polish older adults aged 60-86 (M= 67.33; SD = 5.08). The respondents completed the Personal Wellbeing Index, Geriatric Depression Scale, Three-Dimensional Wisdom Scale, Developmental Tasks Attainment Questionnaire for Seniors, self-rated health scale and sociodemographic survey.

Results

Three-dimensional wisdom, developmental task attainment and self-rated health scores were positive predictors of personal wellbeing and negative predictors of depressive symptoms in older adults. Structural equation modelling revealed that developmental tasks attainment and self-rated health partially mediated the relations between wisdom and mental health in older adults.

Conclusion

It can be assumed that wise older adults implement developmental tasks more efficiently and assess their subjective health more favorably, which may strengthen their personal wellbeing and prevent depression. The findings suggest that wisdom plays an important role in healthy aging.

Global, regional and national burden of endocrine, metabolic, blood and immune disorders 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease study 2019

Background

Endocrine, metabolic, blood and immune disorders (EMBID) is a vital public health problem globally, but the study on its burden and global trends was scarce. We aimed to evaluate the global burden of disease and trends in EMBID from 1990 to 2019.

Methods

We extracted the data of EMBID-related on death cases, Age-standardized death rates (ASDRs), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), Age-standardized DALY rates, years of life lost (YLLs), Age-standardized YLL rates, years lived with disability (YLDs) and Age-standardized YLD rates between 1990 and 2019 from the Global Burden of Disease 2019, by sex, age, and year at the global and geographical region levels. The Annual rate of change was directly extracted from Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) and we also calculated the age-related age-standardized rate (ASR) to quantify trends in EMBID-related deaths, DALYs, YLLs and YLDs.

Result

Globally, the EMBID-related ASDRs showed an increasing trend, whereas the DALYs ASR, YLLs ASR and YLDs ASR were decreased between 1990 to 2019. Furthermore, High-income North America and Southern Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest both ASDRs and DALYs ASR, and Southern Sub-Saharan Africa and Caribbean had the highest both YLDs ASR and YLLs ASR in 2019. Males had a higher EMBID-related ASDRs than females, but the DALYs ASR in females were higher than males. The burden of EMBID was higher in older-aged compared to other age groups, especially in developed regions.

Conclusion

Although EMBID-related ASRs for DALYs-, YLLs- and YLDs declined at the global level from 1990 to 2019, but the ASDRs was increasing. This implied high healthcare costs and more burden of ASDRs due to EMBID in the future. Therefore, there was an urgent need to adopt geographic targets, age-specific targets, prevention strategies and treatments for EMBID to reduce negative health outcomes globally.
