Synthesis of Graphene Nanosheets from Coconut and Candlenut Shells: Large-Scale Production and Application in Fe Ion Adsorption and Electrochemical Properties

Graphene nanosheets (GNS) have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional properties and wide-ranging applications. This research aims to synthesize GNS from coconut shells and candlenut shells and to compare their performance in Fe ion adsorption and electrochemical properties. Both coconut and candlenut shells were used as raw materials, and the pyrolysis method was chosen to produce large-scale GNS. The GNS were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, FESEM-EDX, AAS, and electrochemical measurements, including CV and EIS on modified electrodes. New findings from this study reveal that GNS derived from candlenut shells exhibit thinner layers and fewer defects compared with those derived from coconut shells. This structural advantage contributes to superior Fe ion adsorption efficiency and better electrochemical performance, making the GNS from candlenut shells more suitable for applications in flexible electronics and electrochemical devices. Furthermore, the synthesis method effectively reduces the amount of oxides associated with defects in the GNS, enhancing the material's potential for high-performance applications. The GNS produced from candlenut shells showed an Fe adsorption effectiveness of 0.33 ± 0.012 mg/g, a charge transfer resistance of 0.78 kΩ, and a capacitance of 108.8 F/g, indicating their promising role in future technological applications.

Graphene-based versus alumina supports on CO2 methanation using lanthanum-promoted nickel catalysts

The valorization of CO2 as a biofuel, transforming it through methanation as part of the power-to-gas (P2G) process, will allow the reduction of the net emissions of this gas to the atmosphere. Catalysts with 13 wt.% of nickel (Ni) loading incorporated into alumina and graphene derivatives were used, and the effect of the support on the activity was examined at temperatures between 498 and 773 K and 10 bar of pressure. Among the graphene-based catalysts (13Ni/AGO, 13Ni/BGO, 13Ni/rGO, 13Ni-Ol/GO, 13Ni/Ol-GO, and 13Ni/Ol-GO Met), the highest methane yield was found for 13Ni/rGO (78% at 810 K), being the only system comparable to the catalyst supported on alumina 13Ni/Al2O3 (89.5% at 745 K). The incorporation of 14 wt.% of lanthanum (La) into the most promising supports, rGO and alumina, led to nickel-support interactions that enhanced the catalytic activity of 13Ni/Al2O3 (89.5% at lower temperature, 727 K) but was not effective for 13Ni/rGO. The resistance against deactivation by H2S poisoning was also studied for these catalysts, and a fast deactivation was observed. In addition, activity recovery was impossible despite the regeneration treatment carried out over catalysts. Application of an in-house packed octadecylsilica-functionalized graphene oxide column for capillary liquid chromatography analysis of hormones in urine samples

Graphene oxide-based LC stationary phases were developed and applied for separating hormones from urine using capillaryLC-MS/MS. Using two analytical approaches - direct injection and column-switching arrangement - it was possible to evaluate the chromatographic parameters and perform tests on the raw biological fluid. Two stationary phases (SPs) were produced, varying the amino silica support particle diameter (Si, 5, and 10 μm). Graphene oxide was covalently bonded to the surface of Si particles, and this material was functionalized by the insertion of octadecylsilica groups, generating the SiGO-C18. Infra-red spectroscopy assays revealed that both steps were successful - supporting GO onto Si and further C18 customization. Scanning electron microscopy showed spherical geometries with minor irregularities and narrow particle size distribution for the produced SPs. The GO-coating rate was higher on the Si particles of 10 μm. As a result, the 10 μm produced column reported better resolution, efficiency, and peak capacity. Therefore, this SiGO-C18 capillary column (100 mm × 0.32 mm i.d., 10 μm dp) was applied successfully in a column-switching method to separate hormones in urine. Linearity (R2 above 0.99), quantification limits (between 1.0 and 5 μg/L), and other figures of merit of the method were determined. It is worth mentioning that the SiGO-C18 capillaryLC column performed adequately, separating the target compounds in less than 6 min. We hope this work could significantly contribute to shedding some light on graphene-based materials as a promising class of stationary phase for miniaturized liquid chromatography.

Recent Advancements of N-Doped Graphene for Rechargeable Batteries: A Review

Graphene, a 2D carbon structure, due to its unique materials characteristics for energy storage applications has grasped the considerable attention of scientists. The highlighted properties of this material with a mechanically robust and highly conductive nature have opened new opportunities for different energy storage systems such as Li-S (lithium-sulfur), Li-ion batteries, and metal-air batteries. It is necessary to understand the intrinsic properties of graphene materials to widen its large-scale applications in energy storage systems. In this review, different routes of graphene synthesis were investigated using chemical, thermal, plasma, and other methods along with their advantages and disadvantages. Apart from this, the applications of N-doped graphene in energy storage devices were discussed.

The Influence of the Size and Oxidation Degree of Graphene Flakes on the Process of Creating 3D Structures during its Cross-Linking

This article presents the results of the cross-linking of oxidized flake graphene (GO) using hydrazine at room temperature. Conducting the process at temperatures up to 30 °C allowed to eliminate the phenomenon of thermal GO reduction to its non-oxidized form. In addition, based on the Infrared and Raman spectroscopy as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the cross-linking ability of GO was observed depending on its size and degree of oxidation. These parameters were associated with selected physicochemical and electrical properties of obtained 3D structures. Three GO flakes sizes were tested in three different oxidation degrees. It was shown that, regardless of the size of GO, it is crucial to achieve a specific oxidation degree threshold which for the conducted tests was a >20% share of oxygen atoms in the whole structure. This value determines the ability to cross-link with hydrazine thanks to which it is possible to synthesize the spatial structure in which the π–π interactions among individual flakes are significantly reduced. This directly translates into the fact that the 3D structure shows an electrical resistance value in the range of 4–103 Ω, depending on the size and oxidation degree of the used material. The explanation of this phenomenon related to the electrical conductivity of 3D structures was confirmed based on the molecular modeling of the chemical structures.
