The Relationship Between Empirical Avoidance, Anxiety, Difficulty Describing Feelings and Internet Addiction Among College Students: A Moderated Mediation Model

With the increasing detection rate of Internet addiction in college students, the correlation between Internet addiction and emotional problems is further strengthened. Therefore, it is crucial to actively investigate the emotional mechanisms underlying college students' internet addiction to foster their healthy development. This study establishes a moderated mediation model based on the relationships among experiential avoidance, internet addiction, anxiety, and difficulty describing feelings to explore the link between experiential avoidance and internet addiction, the mediating role of anxiety, and the moderating effect of difficulty describing feelings. The study collected data from 1,591 Chinese college students across seven provinces (municipalities), utilizing measures such as the Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire, the Internet Addiction Scale, the Anxiety Subscale, and the Difficulty Describing Feelings Scale. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted to further investigate the potential emotional mechanisms behind college students' internet addiction. The results indicated that experiential avoidance significantly predicts internet addiction among college students, with anxiety mediating the relationship between experiential avoidance and internet addiction. Additionally, difficulty describing feelings moderate the relationship between experiential avoidance and anxiety. These findings further suggest that emotional disorders such as experiential avoidance, anxiety, and difficulty describing feelings are potential risk factors behind college students' internet addiction. The study recommends enhancing psychological counseling and other intervention measures in interventions for college students' internet addiction.

Determinants of academic achievement: How parents and teachers influence high school students' performance

This study explores the contribution of various drivers of attainment in secondary education in Portugal. We propose a model explaining the influence of students, teachers, and parents' traits on high school achievement, measured by the self-reported Math and Portuguese final grades of 220 students. Using PLS-SEM, we show that previous achievement predicts current achievement in both subjects; however, noteworthy differences were found. Portuguese grades are significantly better for students whose parents have post-secondary education and communicate higher expectations about their offspring's school careers. At the same time, Math achievement is influenced by students' perception of teachers' involvement but not by parents' expectations or education. Previous retention and receiving educational allowance impair Math achievement, but not Portuguese. Results and implications are discussed.

Development study of 2–5 age Technology Addiction Scale (TAS)

PURPOSE

Although it is known that technology use increases in early childhood, no measurement tool has been found to examine technology addictions in children in this period. In this study, the development and validation process of the Technology Addiction Scale (TAS), which can be used to evaluate the technology addiction of children 2-5 years, is described.

DESIGN

The sample of the study consists of 308 children 2-5 years living in one of the big cities of Turkey.

METHODS

Item-total correlation coefficients, Cronbach Alpha reliability analyzes, explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses, and normality analyzes were used in the evaluation of the research data.

FINDINGS

As a result of the analyzes made, the validity and reliability of the 9-item 2-factor (impulsiveness and implicit attitude) TAS scale have been proven. The Cronbach alpha value of the impulsiveness factor was calculated as 0.865, the Cronbach alpha value of the implicit attitude factor was calculated as 0.840, and the total Cronbach alpha value of the scale was 0.90. These Cronbach alpha values show an acceptable level of reliability.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the results of the validity and reliability analyzes, it can be said that TAS can be used as a reliable scale.

A Weight and Meta-Analysis on the Academic Achievement of High School Students

Understanding the determinants of academic achievement (AA) is crucial for virtually every stakeholder interested in personal development and individual and societal wellbeing. Extensive research in several areas, such as education, economics, or psychology, has addressed this topic, identifying a vast number of determinants that impact high school students’ AA. In this work, we perform a meta-analysis, including a weight analysis of 49 quantitative studies that investigate this topic, exploring the best predictors of high school students’ academic success. We also explore moderation effects. Our results show that academic self-efficacy and socioeconomic status are the best predictors of AA, and they are statistically significant. Other statistically significant predictors, albeit less common in the analyses, are mastery avoidance, motivation, sleep habits, and work avoidance. Implications for theory and practice and directions for future research are discussed.
