Assessing the effect of working conditions on routine medical checkup among artisanal goldminers in Ghana

Prevalence and associations between occupational diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in Northern China

This study examined the prevalence and associations between occupational-related diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in Northern China. The study sampled 506 miners from two coal mines in Northern China. Descriptive (frequency, percentages, and chi-square tests) and inferential (complementary log-log logistic regression) analyses were carried out to assess prevalence and associations. The prevalence of coal mining-related pulmonary diseases was 94%, with 40% and 37% reporting pneumoconiosis and bronchitis respectively. Emphysema and tuberculosis were less prevalent with a total prevalence of 5% while 12% of the miners reported two, three, or four of these diseases. For cardiovascular diseases, 66% of the miners reported 3H (hypertension, hyperlipemia, and hyperglycemia) while heart disease and cerebral infarction were reported by 6% and 2% of the miners respectively. Also, 5% and 2% of the miners reported two or all three of 3H, heart condition, and cerebral infarction. The overall prevalence of cardiovascular diseases was 81% while 82% and 63% of the miners reported experiencing some frequency of emotional exhaustion and dust mask anxiety respectively. The study also identified associations between mining-related diseases, emotional exhaustion, dust mask anxiety, and other demographic, personal habits and work-related factors. Miners with pulmonary diseases were more likely to experience emotional exhaustion and dust mask anxiety. Contrariwise, miners with cardiovascular diseases were less likely to experience dust mask anxiety. Factors such as age, engaging in physical exercises, rhinitis, source of pressure and shift system were also associated with emotional exhaustion and dust mask anxiety. These findings highlight the prevalence of occupational diseases, emotional exhaustion, and dust mask anxiety among coal miners in China. The study emphasizes the need for interventions to address health risks, improve work conditions, and support miners' well-being in the coal mining industry.

Setting up a network of comprehensive care for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia: Lessons learned from Tanzania

Over the last 2 decades, the introduction of targeted therapies and the advances in the detection of BCR::ABL1 oncogene have dramatically improved comprehensive care for patients with Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The once deadly malignancy has now transformed into a chronic disease with an overall patient survival approaching that of the age-matched general population. While excellent prognoses have been reported among CML patients in high-income countries, it is unfortunately not the same for those living in low and middle-income (LMIC) countries such as Tanzania. This disparity is largely contributed by barriers associated with the provision of comprehensive care including early diagnosis, access to treatment, and regular monitoring of the disease. In this review, we will share our experiences and lessons learned in setting up a network of comprehensive care for patients with CML in Tanzania.

Application of wrapper based hybrid system for classification of risk tolerance in the Indian mining industry

The degree to which an individual is willing to take risks i.e., risk tolerance is often cited as a significant causal element in the majority of workplace accidents. It is essential to determine the risk tolerance level of miners and utilise their risk profiles to design improved training modules, safety, recruitment, and deployment policies. This paper aims to identify the most critical factors (or features) influencing miners' risk tolerance in the Indian coal industry and develop a robust prediction model to learn their risk tolerance levels. To do end, we first conducted a questionnaire survey representing the complete feature set (with 36 features) among 360 miners and divided their responses into five classes of risk tolerance. Next, we propose a wrapper based hybrid system that combines particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random forest (RF) to train a multi-class classifier with a subset of features. In general, the proposed system selects the best feature subset by iteratively generating different feature combinations using the PSO and training an RF classifier model to assess the effectiveness of the generated feature subsets for the F1-score. At last, we compared the PSO-RF with four traditional classification methods to evaluate its effectiveness in terms of precision, recall, F1-score, accuracy, goodness-of-fit, and area under the curve.

Reducing workplace unsafe behaviour using risk classification, profiling, risk tolerance approach

Individuals' risk tolerance capacity is one of the primary reasons for their unsafe behaviour at the workplace and is commonly identified as an important causal factor for the majority of workplace accidents. Research has exhibited the significance of individuals' risk tolerance while dealing with risk at workplace. However, limited research is done to explore the influence of various factors on individuals' risk tolerance. In this paper, questionnaire survey (42 questions based on the 36 factors) data were gathered from 606 miners (various category) belonging from three major coal producing subsidiary of northern India. Based on the responses received on the questionnaire survey, (1) Statistical method is used to identify the critical factors (10 critical factors) among all; (2) risk classification (Personal Protective Equipment, operational and others-3 way) system was introduced based on the nature of risk being taken; and (3) organisational risk profiling was done. The methodology of risk profiling and risk classification introduced in this paper will help the organisation identify the critical groups and the nature of the risks being taken, respectively. Further, by considering the combined effect of all three outcomes, necessary compliances can be carried out like design of training module, framing of safety policies and deployment of suitable manpower.

Mercury Exposure in Artisanal Mining: Assessing the Effect of Occupational Activities on Blood Mercury Levels Among Artisanal and Small-Scale Goldminers in Ghana

A cross-sectional survey of 425 male artisanal and small-scale goldminers (ASGM) was conducted to examine the relationship between the occupational activities of the miners and their blood mercury levels while controlling for relevant biosocial and socio-cultural factors. The data was subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. Initial findings showed that 43.29% of the ASGM miners had blood mercury levels above the occupational exposure threshold. Among the occupational factors, ASGM miners who amalgamate gold, burn amalgam, and ASGM miners who smelt gold were 2.260, 1.881, and 2.094 times respectively more likely to have high blood mercury levels as compared to ASGM miners who did not carry out these activities. Also, ASGM miners who suck excess mercury with their mouth (OR = 0.197, p < 0.001) were less likely to have high blood mercury levels. For the biosocial and socio-cultural attributes, high blood mercury levels was less likely among older ASGM miners (OR = 0.507, p < 0.05). Inversely, high blood mercury levels was more likely among ASGM miners who are married (OR = 1.627, p < 0.05), ASGM miners with junior (OR = 2.240, p < 0.001) and senior (OR = 1.575, p < 0.05) high school education, and ASGM miners who have 6-10 years (OR = 3.802, p < 0.001) and above 10 years (OR = 2.591, p < 0.001) work experience. ASGM miners who amalgamate gold, burn amalgam, and smelt gold are exposed to mercury and are at risk of mercury poisoning. This could, however, be minimized with the right capturing devices and personal protective equipment. This notwithstanding, unsafe, and unsustainable occupational practices such as working in mercury contaminated water and sucking excess mercury with the mouth should be discouraged.

Occupational health and safety in mining: Predictive probabilities of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use among artisanal goldminers in Ghana

Artisanal goldminers in Ghana are exposed to various levels and forms of health, safety and environmental threats. Without the required legislation and regulations, artisanal miners are responsible for their own health and safety at work. Consequently, understanding the probabilities of self-protection at work by artisanal goldminers is crucial. A cross-sectional survey of 500 artisanal goldminers was conducted to examine the probabilities of personal protective equipment use among artisanal goldminers in Ghana. The data was subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistics. Initial findings showed that personal protective equipment use among artisanal miners was 77.4%. Overall, higher probabilities of personal protective equipment use was observed among artisanal goldminers who work in good health and safety conditions as compared to artisanal miners who work in poor health and safety conditions. Also, personal protective equipment use was more probable among the highly educated artisanal goldminers, miners who regularly go for medical screening and the most experienced miners. Additionally, personal protective equipment use was more probable among artisanal miners who work in non-production departments and miners who work in the medium scale subsector. Inversely, personal protective equipment use was less probable among female artisanal miners and miners who earn more monthly income ($174 and above). To increase self-care and safety consciousness in artisanal mining, there is the need for a national occupational health and safety legislation in Ghana. Also, interventions and health promotion campaigns for better occupational conditions in artisanal mining should target and revise the health and safety related workplace programs and conditions.
