Validation of the Hungarian version of the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ)

Lost in Thought or Just Lonely? Everyday Cognitive Competence in Middle Adulthood

Everyday cognitive competence refers to the ability to manage cognitively demanding tasks essential for maintaining functional independence. While cognitive abilities are well explored in explaining individual differences in everyday cognitive competence, growing attention has been directed toward the impact of non-cognitive factors like loneliness. This study aims to investigate how executive function (EF) components-updating, inhibition, and task shifting-predict everyday cognitive competence and whether loneliness explains the additional variance beyond EF processes. To account for the multifaceted nature of everyday cognitive competence, both performance-based (Everyday Problems Test-EPT) and self-reported measures (Cognitive Failures Questionnaire-CFQ) were administrated. The sample included 176 middle-aged adults (ages 43-65), a group suitable for investigating predictors of everyday cognitive competence in the early stages of cognitive aging. The findings reveal that updating is a significant predictor of the performance on the EPT, while loneliness is not. When self-reported cognitive lapses are considered, loneliness emerges as a significant predictor. The lack of a relationship between the EPT and CFQ, along with their differing associations with EF, loneliness, and sociodemographic factors, suggests they assess distinct aspects of everyday cognitive competence. This highlights the need for a multidimensional assessment framework to gain a comprehensive understanding of everyday cognitive competence in middle-aged adults.

Cross-cultural adaptation, validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Cognitive Functioning Self-Assessment Scale (CFSS)

The Cognitive Functioning Self-Assessment Scale (CFSS) is a scale that enables individuals to assess their subjective cognitive performance. The study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the CFSS to Turkish (CFSS-TR) and prove its psychometric properties. The study included 180 community-dwelling adults over 18 years of age with no psychological or neurological disorders. Participants were assessed using the CFSS-TR, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS), and the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) via online survey. Two weeks later, the CFSS-TR was taken from the participants for the second time. The mean age of the individuals was 41.06 ± 13.34 years. The CFSS-TR had good test-retest reliability (ICC: 0.84, CI 95%: 0.78-0.88) and good internal consistency (α = 0.88). The standard error of measurement (SEM) and the 95% confidence interval minimal detectable change (MDC95) values for the total score were 0.11 and 0.30, respectively. CFSS-TR had a strong correlation with CFQ, moderate correlation with HADS depression subscore, and weak correlation with HADS anxiety subscore (respectively r = 0.71, r = 0.52, r = 0.39, p < 0.001). CFSS-TR is a reliable and valid questionnaire for self-assessment of cognitive function in Turkish-speaking community-dwelling adults.

Tinnitus-associated cognitive and psychological impairments: a comprehensive review meta-analysis

Background

Tinnitus is strongly associated with an increased risk of cognitive disabilities. The findings of this research will provide valuable support for future investigations aimed at determining the correlation between tinnitus and the risk of cognitive impairments.

Objectives

We investigated the potential correlation between tinnitus and the risk of various cognitive impairments, such as dementia, compromised learning attention, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The study examined this relationship collectively and by categorizing the data based on different age groups.

Methods

We compiled data from case-control studies and cohort studies obtained from reputable databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase. To minimize potential bias, two reviewers independently assessed the selected articles. After extracting the data, we calculated the pooled odds ratios (ORs) using a random-effects model.

Results

Seventeen relevant studies, comprising an adult population, were included in this analysis. Pooled estimated outcomes revealed a strong association between tinnitus and an elevated risk of dementia-compromised learning, auditory attention, anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality (P<0.05). Furthermore, the pooled analysis stratified by age demonstrated that patients aged above 60 years, in comparison to those aged 18 to 60 years, exhibited more significant outcomes in relation to the progression of cognitive impairments.

Conclusion

Tinnitus has the potential to increase the risk of cognitive impairments. Moreover, geriatric patients aged above 60 shows a higher susceptibility to developing cognitive disabilities compared to their younger counterparts.

The association between metamemory, subjective memory complaints, mood, and well-being: the Hungarian validation of Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire

The current study addressed the relationship between subjective memory complaints and negative affect, well-being, and demographic variables by investigating the Hungarian version of Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire. The original factor structure showed a poor fit on our data; therefore, principal component analysis was conducted on data from 577 participants, ranging in age from 18 to 92 years. Our analysis provided a six-component solution: Satisfaction, Retrospective memory mistakes, Prospective memory mistakes, External Strategies, Internal Strategies, and Frustration. To improve the reliability and internal consistency indicators we created four subscales by combining Frustration with Satisfaction, and Retrospective and Prospective memory mistakes subscales. Thus, we were able to preserve the factor structure similar to the original. Subjective memory complaints were correlated positively with anxiety and depression and were associated negatively with well-being. We found a slight positive correlation between age and memory ability, and age was associated negatively with the frequency of external strategy use. Individuals with higher education were satisfied with their memory, used more frequent external strategies. Furthermore, men were more satisfied with their memory and reported better memory ability, while women tended to use more external and internal strategies. Women also showed a higher level of anxiety and depression than men. In conclusion, self-reported memory changes are of particular importance because of their association with perceived mental health status and implications for later disease development.
