The limits of aerial techniques for producing twist in forward 1½ somersault dives

Insights from a Nine-Segment Biomechanical Model and Its Simulation for Anthropometrical Influence on Individualized Planche Learning and Training in Gymnastics

The Planche is a challenging, the most required, and a highly valued gymnastic skill. Yet, it is understudied biomechanically. This article aims to explore the anthropometric variations that could affect the quality of balancing control in the Planche and to identify the body types that have an advantage in learning and training. To achieve this goal, a 9-segment rigid-body model is designed to simulate the skill performance by using 80 different body types. The results demonstrate that body type is a critical factor in determining an individual's innate ability to perform the Planche. The innate ability is affected by body mass, height, gender, and race. The findings reveal that a personalized training plan based on an individual's body type is necessary for optimal learning and training. A one-size-fits-all approach may not be effective since each individual's body type varies. Additionally, this study emphasizes the importance of considering segmental and/or limb characteristics in designing effective training plans. This study concludes that, for a given height, individuals with relatively longer legs and a shorter trunk (the characteristics of Europeans in comparison to Asians) could be better suited to perform the Planche. This suggests that European body types are naturally more advanced than Asian body types when it comes to performing the Planche. The practical implications of the current study are that practitioners can use biomechanical modeling and simulation techniques to identify body types that are most suited for the Planche and design training programs that are tailored to individual body types for optimizing their learning and training.

Fifty years of performance-related sports biomechanics research

Over the past fifty years there has been considerable development in motion analysis systems and in computer simulation modelling of sports movements while the relevance and importance of functional variability of sports technique has become increasingly recognised. Technical developments for experimental work have led to increased, and still increasing, subject numbers. Increased subjects per study give better statistical power, the ability to utilise different data analyses, and thus the determination of more subtle and nuanced factors. The overall number of studies has also increased massively. Most actions in sport can, and have, been studied at some level with even the more challenging ones, such as player on player impacts, having some developing research. Computer simulation models of sports movements have ranged from simple (one or two segment) models to very complex musculoskeletal models and have used parameters ranging from the generic to individual-specific. Simple models have given insights into the key mechanics of movement while individual-specific model optimisations have been used to improve athlete performance. Our depth of understanding of the mechanics of sports techniques has increased across a wide range of sports. In the future there is likely to be more development and use of markerless motion capture, individual-specific model parameters, and more consideration of motor control aspects in the analysis of sports technique.

Angular velocity around the longitudinal axis in combination with head movements of springboard divers during twisted somersaults

The ability of springboard divers to perform and control difficult elements with multiple twisted somersaults before entering the water is of great interest for coaches and researchers. In order to produce twists within somersaults, divers use both 'contact' and 'aerial' techniques. After completing body axes rotations, head movements seem to be important, as they enable visual information in the air. The current study aims at investigating angular velocities around the longitudinal axis in combination with head movements of 13 springboard divers during twisted somersaults. Divers performed forward and backward somersaults with different numbers of half twists. The results revealed maximum longitudinal axis angular velocities between 500°/s and 1300°/s. Moreover, results showed that the use of contact technique was greater in twisted somersaults with backward approaches, and thus higher angular velocities could be achieved. While finishing the twists, head movements in the opposite direction to the longitudinal axis rotation occurred, which allow divers to orient themselves. Twist speeds influenced athletes' head movements to have greater angles and greater rotational velocities. Therefore, it is concluded that fast head movements are necessary in difficult twisted dives to allow orientation in the short phase between finishing the twist and entering the water surface.

Optimal forward twisting pike somersault without self-collision

In acrobatic sports, twisting fast before piking allows athletes to enlarge their scoring potential. Since planning the arm and hip movements to twist fast is unintuitive, optimal control appears as a powerful and risk-free tool. To our knowledge, predictive simulations of human motion did not include self-collision avoidance constraints resulting potentially in unrealistic solutions. Our objective was to generate innovative and realistic twisting techniques for forward somersaults ending in pike position by solving an optimal control problem including non-collision constraints. Optimal techniques for one, two, or three twists before piking were generated by minimising the duration of the twisting and piking phases. The model was composed of five segments with one degree of freedom at the chest and two at the hips and shoulders. We explored local minima using a multi-start approach. Solutions were further analysed to assess the impact of non-collision constraints, the segments' contribution to twist creation, and their stability. For each desired number of twists, one relevant solution was chosen. Optimisation showed that trampolinists could attempt new acrobatics: forward triple twisting somersault ending in pike position. This research also shows that non-collision constraints strongly modify the optimal techniques without impairing significantly their performance.

The limits of aerial and contact techniques for producing twist in reverse 1½ somersault dives

An angle-driven computer simulation model of aerial movement was used to determine the maximum amount of twist that can be produced in a reverse 1½ somersault dive from a three-metre springboard using various aerial and contact twisting techniques. The segmental inertia parameters of an elite springboard diver were used in the simulations and lower bounds were placed on the durations of arm and hip angle changes based on recorded performances of twisting somersaults. A limiting dive was identified as that producing the largest possible odd number of half twists. Simulations of the limiting dives were found using simulated annealing optimisation to produce the required amounts of somersault, tilt and twist after a flight time of 1.5 s. Additional optimisations were then run to seek solutions with the arms less adducted during the twisting phase. It was found that the upper limits ranged from 3½ to 5½ twists with arm abduction ranges lying between 8° and 23°. Similar results were obtained when the inertia parameters of two other springboard divers were used. It may be concluded that a reverse 1½ somersault dive using aerial asymmetrical arm and hip movements to produce 5½ twists is a realistic possibility. To accomplish this limiting dive the diver needs to be able to coordinate the timing of configurational changes with the progress of the twist with a precision of 10 ms or better.

Maximising forward somersault rotation in springboard diving

Performance in the flight phase of springboard diving is limited by the amounts of linear and angular momentum generated during the takeoff phase. A planar 8-segment torque-driven simulation model combined with a springboard model was used to investigate optimum takeoff technique for maximising rotation in forward dives from the one metre springboard. Optimisations were run by varying the torque activation parameters to maximise forward rotation potential (angular momentum × flight time) while allowing for movement constraints, anatomical constraints, and execution variability. With a constraint to ensure realistic board clearance and anatomical constraints to prevent joint hyperextension, the optimised simulation produced 24% more rotation potential than a simulation matching a 2½ somersault piked dive. When 2 ms perturbations to the torque onset timings were included for the ankle, knee and hip torques within the optimisation process, the model was only able to produce 87% of the rotation potential achieved in the matching simulation. This implies that a pre-planned technique cannot produce a sufficiently good takeoff and that adjustments must be made during takeoff. When the initial onset timings of the torque generators were unperturbed and 10 ms perturbations were introduced into the torque onset timings in the board recoil phase, the optimisation produced 8% more rotation potential than the matching simulation. The optimised simulation had more hip flexion and less shoulder extension at takeoff than the matching simulation. This study illustrates the difficulty of including movement variability within performance optimisation when the movement duration is sufficiently long to allow feedback corrections.
