Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Genetic alterations play a critical role in hepatocarcinogenesis, with mutations in the telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter (TERTp) and CTNNB1 exon 3 representing two of the most frequently reported somatic events in HCC. However, the frequency and distribution of these mutations vary across geographic regions and viral etiologies, particularly hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). This study aimed to assess the global distribution and etiological associations of TERTp and CTNNB1 exon 3 mutations in HCC through a comprehensive literature review. Our analysis, encompassing over 4000 HCC cases, revealed that TERTp mutations were present in 49.2% of tumors, with C228T being the predominant variant (93.3% among mutated cases). A striking contrast was observed between viral etiologies: TERTp mutations were detected in 31.6% of HBV-related HCCs, compared to 66.2% in HCV-related cases. CTNNB1 exon 3 mutations were identified in 23.1% of HCCs, showing a similar association with viral etiology, being more common in HCV-related cases (30.7%) than in HBV-related tumors (12.8%). Geographically, both mutations exhibited comparable patterns, with higher frequencies in Europe, Japan, and the USA, while lower rates were observed in China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Our findings underscore the distinct molecular profiles of HCC according to viral etiology and geographic origin, highlighting the need for region- and etiology-specific approaches to HCC prevention, diagnosis, and targeted therapy.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of the study is to identify and evaluate multifaceted factors impacting the survival of elderly cirrhotic HCC patients following ablation therapy, with the goal of constructing a nomogram to predict their 3-, 5-, and 8-year overall survival (OS). Patients and Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 736 elderly cirrhotic HCC patients who underwent ablation therapy between 2014 and 2022. LASSO regression, random survival forest (RSF), and multivariate Cox analyses were employed to identify independent prognostic factors for OS, followed by the development and validation of a predictive nomogram. Harrell's concordance index (C-index), calibration plot and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to assess the performance of the nomogram. The nomogram was finally utilized to stratify patients into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups, aiming to assess its efficacy in precisely discerning individuals with diverse overall survival outcomes. Results Alcohol drinking, tumor number, globulin (Glob) and prealbumin (Palb) were identified and integrated to establish a novel prognostic nomogram. The nomogram exhibited strong discriminative ability with C-indices of 0.723 (training cohort) and 0.693 (validation cohort), along with significant Area Under the Curve (AUC) values for 3-year, 5-year, and 8-year OS in both cohorts (0.758, 0.770, and 0.811 for training cohort; 0.744, 0.699 and 0.737 for validation cohort). Calibration plots substantiated its consistency, while DCA curves corroborated its clinical utility. The nomogram further demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in discerning distinct risk populations, highlighting its robust applicability for prognostic stratification. Conclusion Our study successfully developed and validated a robust nomogram model based on four key clinical parameters for predicting 3-, 5- and 8-year OS among elderly cirrhotic HCC patients following ablation therapy. The nomogram exhibited a remarkable capability in identifying high-risk patients, furnishing clinicians with invaluable insights for postoperative surveillance and tailored therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Background The hTERT promoter mutation represents a common and early event in hepatocarcinogenesis, but its linkage to the morphological status of the underlying liver tissue is poorly understood. We analyzed the connection between the histopathological changes in tumor-bearing liver tissue and the occurrence of the hTERT promoter mutation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), correlated with clinical data. Methods The study cohort comprised 160 histologically confirmed HCC in patients with or without cirrhosis that were investigated for the hTERT promoter mutation. We evaluated the frequency of the hTERT promoter mutation in patients with HCC with or without cirrhosis and correlated it with potential clinical and histopathological drivers. In particular, we examined tumor-bearing noncirrhotic liver tissue regarding inflammation; the modified histological activity index (mHAI), fibrosis, and steatosis; and its correlation with the frequency of the hTERT promoter mutation in HCC. We evaluated overall survival with multivariate Cox regression. Furthermore, we compared hTERT antibody immunohistochemistry and molecular hTERT promoter mutation analysis of both HCC and background liver tissue. Results The hTERT promoter mutation was especially related to HCC in cirrhotic compared with noncirrhotic liver (p < 0.001) and independently of cirrhosis in patients ≥ 60 years (p = 0.005). Furthermore, the hTERT promoter mutation was associated with cirrhosis caused by alcohol toxicity and hepatitis C virus infection. In noncirrhotic liver tissue, the frequency of hTERT-promoter-mutated HCC increased with the degree of inflammation and fibrosis. Nevertheless, 25% of the hTERT-promoter-mutated HCC developed in normal liver tissue without HCC risk factors. Multivariate Cox regression analysis did not reveal an influence of the hTERT promoter mutation in HCC on overall survival at 3, 5, and 16 years. Immunohistochemical analysis with the hTERT antibodies LS-B95 and 2D8 in hTERT-promoter-mutated HCC and hTERT-wildtype HCC showed a mildly stronger immunoreaction compared with the tumor-bearing liver tissue (LS-B95: p < 0.01, 2D8: p < 0.01). Conclusions Our study reveals a connection between pathological changes in tumor-bearing liver tissue and the hTERT promoter mutation in most HCC, even in noncirrhotic liver tissue. Immunohistochemical hTERT antibodies do not discriminate between hTERT-promoter-mutated and wildtype HCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the long-term efficacy of no-touch radiofrequency ablation (NT-RFA) for treating single hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) less than 3 cm. METHODS A total of 331 patients with HCC less than 3 cm undergoing RFA in Southwest Hospital from 2015 to 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were divided into NT-RFA group (n = 113) and conventional RFA (C-RFA) group (n = 218). The survival rate, local tumor progression (LTP) and intrahepatic distant recurrence (IDR) of the two groups were calculated and compared. RESULTS A significant difference was observed in ablation range (p = 0.000) and safety margin (p = 0.000) between the two groups. The 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates in NT-RFA and C-RFA group were 99.12%, 93.73%, 76.18%, 57.00%, 45.17% and 99.08%, 89.91%, 71.26%, 54.28%, 41.77%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.281). The 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-and 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates in NT-RFA and C-RFA group were 78.51%, 52.59%, 41.02%, 34.36%, 30.92% and 68.81%, 44.95%, 30.88%, 23.73%, 22.88%, respectively. The two groups differed significantly (p = 0.044). The 1-, 3-and 5-year LTP-free survival rates in NT-RFA and C-RFA group were 87.12%, 74.99%, 72.32% and 75.75%, 65.52%, 65.52%, respectively. The two groups also differed significantly (p = 0.024). Furthermore, the RFS rates of D ≤ 2 cm subgroups in NT-RFA and C-RFA groups differed significantly (p = 0.037), while the RFS rates of 2 cm < D ≤ 3 cm subgroups in two groups showed no significant difference (p = 0.578). CONCLUSIONS The RFS rates of single HCC less than 3 cm treated by NT-RFA was significantly higher than that of C-RFA. Due to a larger ablation range and safety margin, NT-RFA could significantly reduce LTP and improve RFS. Dual-electrode NT-RFA can significantly improve the RFS rate of patients with HCC less than 2 cm, but there is no obvious advantage compared with C-RFA in the treatment of HCC over 2 cm.

Abstract
Objective To develop and validate a radiomic nomogram for individualized prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in HBV cirrhosis patients based on baseline magnetic resonance imaging examinations and clinical data. Methods 364 patients with HBV cirrhosis from five hospitals were assigned to the training, internal validation, external validation-1 or external validation-2 cohort. All patients underwent baseline magnetic resonance image (MRI) scans and clinical follow-up within three-year time. Clinical risk factors and MRI-based features were extracted and analyzed. The radiomic signatures were built using the radiomics-score (Rad-score) that calculated for each patient as a linear weighted combination of selected MRI-based features. Prognostic performances of the clinical and radiomic nomograms were evaluated with Cox modeling in the training and validation cohorts. Results Eighteen features were selected for inclusion in the Rad-score prognostic model. The radiomic signature from multi-sequence MRI yielded a concordance index (C-index) of 0.710, 0.681, 0.632 and 0.658 in the training, internal validation, external validation-1, external validation-2 cohorts, respectively. Sex and Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class were the most prognostic clinical risk factors in univariate Cox proportional hazards analyses. The radiomic combined nomogram that integrated the radiomic signature with the clinical factors yielded a C-index of 0.746, 0.710, and 0.641 in the training, internal validation, and external validation-1 cohorts, respectively, which was an improvement over either the clinical nomogram or radiomic signature alone. Conclusion We developed an MRI-based radiomic combined nomogram with good discrimination ability for the individualized prediction of HCC in HBV cirrhosis patients within three-year time.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly heterogeneous disease, with more than 40% of patients initially diagnosed with multinodular HCCs. Although circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been shown to effectively detect somatic mutations, little is known about its utility to capture intratumor heterogeneity in patients with multinodular HCC undergoing systemic treatment.

Abstract
Liver transplant is indicated with curative intent for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The radiologic T category is used to determine candidacy and priority of patients on the waiting list. After transplant, the explant liver pathologic TNM stage is used as a predictor of postoperative outcomes and overall prognosis. Although the comparison of radiologic and pathologic T categories for concordance is often considered to be straightforward, the staging conventions significantly differ. Not accounting for these differences is in part the reason for the high rates of radiologic-pathologic discordance reported in the literature, with inconsistent terminology being an additional source of confusion when evaluating concordance. These factors may affect the understanding of important radiopathologic phenotypes of disease and the adequate investigation of their prognostic capabilities. The aims of this article are to provide an overview of the pathologic and radiologic TNM staging systems for HCC while describing staging procedures, emphasize the differences between these staging systems to highlight the limitations of radiologic-pathologic stage correlation, present a review of the literature on the prognostic value of individual features used for HCC staging; and signal significant aspects of preoperative risk stratification that could be improved to positively impact posttransplant outcomes.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of preoperative systemic inflammatory biomarkers including albumin to globulin ratio (AGR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and establish a nomogram in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after microwave ablation (MWA). 192 HCC patients receiving MWA as initial therapy from the first ward of hepatobiliary surgery were classified as training cohort. Whereas, 84 patients from the second of hepatobiliary surgery were classified as validation cohort. Kaplan–Meier (KM) method and univariate analyses showed that AGR, NLR, LMR, and PLR were significantly associated with OS in the training cohort. Multivariate analysis including clinicopathologic features screened out independent predictors including ascites, tumor size, cancer embolus, AGR, and PLR. Based on those variables, a nomogram for predicting OS was established. The C-index was 0.794 in the training cohort and 0.772 in the validation cohort. Calibration plots identified the nomogram performed well with an ideal model. Compared with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system and simple tumor size, the nomogram showed better predictive ability. Besides, the nomogram discovered the highest diagnostic accuracy in predicting postoperative clinical outcome than the combination of the present models with tumor size. In conclusion, the constructed nomogram could accurately predict individualized survival probability and might support clinician in individual treatment optimization and clinical decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have focused on risk factors which may predict an intrahepatic local recurrence (LR) on the surgical edge rather than a distant recurrence (DR) in other liver segments after surgery for hepatocarcinoma (HCC). The purpose of this study was to assess the risk factors for both patterns of recurrence. METHODS An international, multicentre, retrospective study was conducted by collecting data on all consecutive patients with a first diagnosis of HCC who were treated between 2010 and 2017. The presence of macrovascular invasion was an exclusion criteria. RESULTS About 376 patients were enrolled, and, among them, 62 presented LR, while 90 had DR. Baseline characteristics were comparable between the two groups, but the DR group had a much higher rate of HCV infection (48.9% vs 29%, p 0.014) and a higher median nodule size (3.40 cm IQR 2.2-5.5 versus 3.0 cm IQR 2.0-5.0 in the LR group, p 0.025). A positive surgical margin (R1, HR 4.721; 95% CI 1.83-12.17; p 0.001) was the only independent risk factor for LR, while MVI (HR 1.837; 95% CI 1.03-3.77; p 0.039) and satellitosis (HR 2.440, 95% CI 1.43-3.77, p 0.001) were the only predictive factors for DR. CONCLUSION MVI and satellitosis are predictive factors of intrahepatic distant recurrence, configuring a probable hallmark of advanced systemic disease, regardless of the treatment. LR has to be considered the expression of surgical failure.

Abstract
Intratumoral neovascularization has intricate effects on tumor growth, metastasis, and treatment. Over the last 30 years, Microvessel density (MVD) has been the standard method for laboratory and clinical evaluation of angiogenesis. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a typical hypervascularized tumor, and the predictive value of MVD for prognosis is still controversial. According to previous viewpoints, this has been attributed to the determination of hotspot, counting methods, vascular endothelial markers, and different definitions of high and low vascular density; however, the heterogeneity of tumor angiogenesis patterns should be factored. The breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and algorithm can improve the objectivity and repeatability of MVD measurement, thus saving a lot of manpower. Presently, anti-angiogenesis therapy is the only effective systematic treatment for liver cancer, and the use of imaging technology-assisted MVD measurement is expected to be a reliable index for evaluating the curative effect. MVD in multinodular hepatocellular carcinoma represents a subject area with huge understudied potential, and exploring it might advance our understanding of tumor heterogeneity.

Abstract
Liver cancer is one of the most common cancer types worldwide and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death. Liver carcinoma is distinguished by a high heterogeneity in pathogenesis, histopathology and biological behavior. Dysregulated signaling pathways and various gene mutations are frequent in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), which represent the two most common types of liver tumors. Both tumor types are characterized by telomere shortening and reactivation of telomerase during carcinogenesis. Continuous cell proliferation, e.g., by oncogenic mutations, can cause extensive telomere shortening in the absence of sufficient telomerase activity, leading to dysfunctional telomeres and genome instability by breakage-fusion-bridge cycles, which induce senescence or apoptosis as a tumor suppressor mechanism. Telomerase reactivation is required to stabilize telomere functionality and for tumor cell survival, representing a genetic risk factor for the development of liver cirrhosis and liver carcinoma. Therefore, telomeres and telomerase could be useful targets in hepatocarcinogenesis. Here, we review similarities and differences between HCC and iCCA in telomere biology.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by high prevalence of multifocality. Multifocal HCC can arise synchronously or metachronously either from intrahepatic metastasis (IM) or multicentric occurrence (MO). To date, there have been no established criteria to accurately distinguish whether multifocal HCC originates from IM or MO. Histopathological features remain the most convenient strategy but with subjectivity and limited accuracy. Various molecular biological techniques involving assessment of TP53 mutation status, hepatitis B virus integration sites, and chromosomal alterations have been applied to determine the clonal origin. The introduction of next-generation sequencing facilitates a more comprehensive annotation of intertumor heterogeneity, resulting in more sensitive and accurate clonal discrimination. Generally, MO-HCC has better overall survival than IM-HCC after curative resection. Adjuvant antiviral treatment has been proved to decrease post-treatment recurrence probably by reducing MO-HCC recurrence, whereas adjuvant sorafenib treatment targeting prior micrometastasis failed to reduce IM-HCC recurrence. Recent studies recommended transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and traditional Chinese medicine Huaier granule as effective adjuvant treatments probably by preventing IM and both types of recurrences respectively. Immunotherapy that inhibits immune checkpoint interaction may be an optimal choice for both MO- and IM-HCC. In the future, effective personalized therapy against multifocal HCC may be achieved.

Abstract
The optimal type of surgery (e.g., anatomic or non-anatomic resection) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still under debate despite numerous comparative studies based on overall survival. This debate continues not only because these endpoints are influenced by non-surgical factors, such as liver function, but because the definition of non-anatomic resection for HCC has remained unclear. The optimal surgery could be logically determined based on the mechanism of local intrahepatic metastasis, that is, the drainage of tumour blood flow (TBF), because HCC spreads locally through tumour blood flowing to the peri-tumourous liver parenchyma. Since TBF is clearly demonstrated by CT scan under hepatic arteriography, the surgical margin can be determined individually based on the drainage of TBF without deteriorating local curability. Controversy regarding RFA and surgery does not result from the curability of treatment itself but from the lack of scientific evidence on safety margins. Based on proper concepts and self-evident truths, an algorithm of loco-regional treatment for HCC is proposed.

Abstract
Multiple hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is divided into two categories: intrahepatic metastasis (IM), which is a true relapse of HCC, and multicentric origin (MO), which is a second primary tumor. Clinical diagnosis of multiple HCC is usually made based on tumor location and/or time to recurrence; however, it is often difficult to distinguish the two types of multiple HCC. Using 41 matched pairs of multiple HCC specimens, we confirmed the accuracy of clinical diagnoses using exome sequence data and investigated the importance of discriminating the type of multiple HCC. Genomic analysis revealed that 18 (43.9%) patients diagnosed as having genomic IM had common mutations in a pair of HCC tumors with the main tumor of these patients being more progressive compared to those with genomic MO. The accuracy of clinical diagnosis based on lobe (Definition 1) and segment (Definition 2) were 68.3% and 78.0%, respectively. Intriguingly, recurrence ≥2 years after initial surgery for 3 patients was IM. The survival of patients with clinical IM was significantly shorter than for those with clinical MO based on both Definition 1 (P = 0.045) and Definition 2 (P = 0.043). However, mean survival was not different between the patients with genomic IM and those with MO (P = 0.364). Taken together, genomic analysis elucidated that liver cancer may spread more extensively and more slowly than previously thought. In addition, distinguishing multiple HCC as IM or MC may have provided biological information but was not of clinical importance with respect to patient prognosis.

Abstract
Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks fifth among malignancies globally. Previous studies have shown that systemic inflammatory response, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) are associated with poor prognosis of various types of cancer. Materials and methods Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) was performed using an internal cooling electrode with a 2- or 3-cm exposed tip. The LMR was calculated as the ratio of lymphocytes to monocytes. In order to explore the influence of pretreatment with PLR and LMR on survival of HCC patients undergoing transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and RFA, 204 cases with HCC which accepted RFA and TACE were retrospectively analyzed and assigned into 2 groups based on optimal cutoff values for LMR (low: ≤2.13 or high: >2.13) and PLR (low: ≤95.65 or high: >95.65). Results Patients with a lower PLR had a longer overall survival (OS) compared to those with a higher PLR (median OS, 20 versus 13 months), and patients with a higher LMR had a longer OS than those with a lower LMR (OS, 22 versus 10 months). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis for multiple prognostic factors and identified PLR and LMR as prognostic factors for OS of HCC cases. Conclusion We conclude that PLR and LMR, whose detection is generally available and affordable, may be novel noninvasive circulating markers to potentially assist doctors assess the prognosis of patients.

Abstract
Telomerase is a key enzyme for cell survival that prevents telomere shortening and the subsequent cellular senescence that is observed after many rounds of cell division. In contrast, inactivation of telomerase is observed in most cells of the adult liver. Absence of telomerase activity and shortening of telomeres has been implicated in hepatocyte senescence and the development of cirrhosis, a chronic liver disease that can lead to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. During hepatocarcinogenesis, telomerase reactivation is required to enable the uncontrolled cell proliferation that leads to malignant transformation and HCC development. Part of the telomerase complex, telomerase reverse transcriptase, is encoded by TERT, and several mechanisms of telomerase reactivation have been described in HCC that include somatic TERT promoter mutations, TERT amplification, TERT translocation and viral insertion into the TERT gene. An understanding of the role of telomeres and telomerase in HCC development is important to develop future targeted therapies and improve survival of this disease. In this Review, the roles of telomeres and telomerase in liver carcinogenesis are discussed, in addition to their potential translation to clinical practice as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The long-term prognosis after liver resection for multinodular (≥3 nodules) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally considered to be unfavorable. However, the role of liver resection for binodular HCC is less investigated. SUBJECTS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS From a multicenter database, consecutive patients who underwent curative-intent liver resection for binodular HCC and without macrovascular invasion between 2003 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients' clinical variables as well as perioperative and long-term survival outcomes were analyzed. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to identify the risk factors associated with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) after curative resection. RESULTS Of 263 enrolled patients, the perioperative 30-day mortality and morbidity rates were 1.5% and 28.5%. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS and RFS rates were 81.5%, 52.4%, and 39.1% and 57.1%, 35.8%, and 26.6%, respectively. Multivariable Cox-regression analyses identified preoperative alpha-fetoprotein level >400 μg/L, tumor size with a sum of two nodules >8 cm, tumor size ratio of large/small nodule >1.5 (asymmetrical proportion), unilateral hemiliver distribution of two nodules, distance of ≤3 cm between two nodules, and microvascular invasion in any nodule as independent risk factors associated with decreased OS and RFS. CONCLUSION Liver resection was safe and feasible in patients with binodular HCC, with acceptable perioperative and long-term outcomes. Sum of two tumor sizes, size ratio and distribution, and distance between two nodules were independent risk factors associated with long-term survival outcomes after surgery. These results may guide clinicians to make individualized surgical decisions and estimate long-term prognosis for these patients. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Liver resection was safe and feasible in patients with binodular hepatocellular carcinoma, with acceptable perioperative and long-term outcomes. The sum of two tumor sizes, the size ratio and distribution of the two nodules, and the distance between two nodules were independent risk factors associated with long-term overall survival and recurrence-free survival after liver resection. The results of this study may guide clinicians to make individualized surgical decisions, estimate long-term prognosis, and plan recurrence surveillance and adjuvant therapy for these patients.

Abstract
The interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3, also called 1-8U) gene represents dysregulated expression in various tumors and is involved in tumorigenesis and progression. However, the role of IFITM3 and its underlying mechanism in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still far from elucidated. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of endogenous (approximately 22 nucleotides) small noncoding RNAs, can post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression by repressing protein translation or silencing the expression of target genes that play critical roles in various cancers. miR-29a was identified as being aberrantly expressed in a significant proportion of HCC. However, the correlation between IFITM3 and miR-29a has not been reported to date. In this study, we investigated the expression of IFITM3 in HCC and its effect on the biological behavior of HCC cells as well as the association between IFITM3 and miR-29a. We determined that IFITM3 was upregulated and miR-29a downregulated in HCC tissues and that they were associated with HCC tumor size, tumor multifocal, and venous invasion. The expression of IFITM3 in HCC tissues was negatively correlated with miR-29a expression. Additionally, IFITM3 overexpression and miR-29a nonoverexpression were related to poor prognosis of HCC patients. Knockdown of IFITM3 inhibited migration, invasion, proliferation and promoted apoptosis of HCC cells, which are consistent with the effects of upregulated miR-29a. Additionally, after upregulation of IFITM3, the invasion, migration and proliferation abilities of HL-7702 cells were increased, but the apoptosis rate was decreased. Furthermore, using a Dual-Luciferase reporter gene assay, we identified IFITM3 as a new functional target gene of miR-29a. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated that the migration, invasion, proliferation and apoptosis features of HCC cells could be regulated by miR-29a via IFITM3. Thus, the present study indicated that miR-29a and IFITM3 play critical roles in the development and progression of HCC, revealing that miR-29a and IFITM3 may be novel potential therapeutic targets for patients with HCC.
