Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important biological messenger as well as a signaling molecule that participates in a broad range of physiological events and therapeutic applications in biological systems. However, due to its very short half-life in physiological conditions, its therapeutic applications are restricted. Efforts have been made to develop an enormous number of NO-releasing molecules (NORMs) and motifs for NO delivery to the target tissues. These NORMs involve organic nitrate, nitrite, nitro compounds, transition metal nitrosyls, and several nanomaterials. The controlled release of NO from these NORMs to the specific site requires several external stimuli like light, sound, pH, heat, enzyme, etc. Herein, we have provided a comprehensive review of the biochemistry of nitric oxide, recent advancements in NO-releasing materials with the appropriate stimuli of NO release, and their biomedical applications in cancer and other disease control.

Abstract
The ruthenium nitrosyl moiety, {RuNO}6, is important as a potential releasing agent of nitric oxide and is of inherent interest in coordination chemistry. Typically, {RuNO}6 is found in mononuclear complexes. Herein we describe the synthesis and characterization of several multimetal cluster complexes that contain this unit. Specifically, the heterotrinuclear μ3-oxido clusters [Fe2RuCl4(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)2(NO)(Hpz)2] (6) and [Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(MeOH)(NO)(Hpz)][Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(DMF)(NO)(Hpz)] (7·MeOH·2H2O) and the heterotetranuclear μ4-oxido complex [Ga3RuCl3(μ4-O)(μ-OMe)3(μ-pz)4(NO)] (8) were prepared from trans-[Ru(OH)(NO)(Hpz)4]Cl2 (5), which itself was prepared via acidic hydrolysis of the linear heterotrinuclear complex {[Ru(μ-OH)(μ-pz)2(pz)(NO)(Hpz)]2Mg} (4). Complex 4 was synthesized from the mononuclear Ru complexes (H2pz)[trans-RuCl4(Hpz)2] (1), trans-[RuCl2(Hpz)4]Cl (2), and trans-[RuCl2(Hpz)4] (3). The new compounds 4-8 were all characterized by elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, IR, UV-vis, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, with complexes 6 and 7 being characterized also by temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetometry indicated a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between paramagnetic centers in 6 and 7. The ability of 4 and 6-8 to form linkage isomers and release NO upon irradiation in the solid state was investigated by IR spectroscopy. A theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of 6 by DFT and ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations indicated a redox-noninnocent behavior of the NO ancillary ligand in 6, which was also manifested in TD-DFT calculations of its electronic absorption spectrum. The electronic structure of 6 was also studied by an X-ray charge density analysis.

Abstract
This work reports a series of five-acetate triruthenium clusters [Ru3O(OAc)5(L)(py)2]PF6, where L = dppn (benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, 1); dppz (dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, 2); CH3-dppz (7-methyldipyrido [3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine, 3); Cl-dppz (7-chlorodipyrido [3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine, 4); and phen (1,10-phenanthroline, 5). The EPR spectra collected at 10 K displayed one isotropic signal without a hyperfine structure and with g values of ∼2.0, which showed that the five-acetate triruthenium clusters are paramagnetic, and that their electronic delocalization resembled the electronic delocalization of the parent hexa-acetate complexes. 1H NMR analysis showed that the orthometalated phenazines lowered the symmetry of the compounds significantly. Inductive effects from the carbanion and ring current effects outweighed the effect of paramagnetic anisotropy and dominated the spectra. This resulted in a lack of typical correlations with ligand parameters such as pKa that are observed for the parent hexa-acetate compounds. DFT calculations allowed for a discussion of those parameters in terms of the optimized geometry of compound 2. Natural bond orbital (NBO) results, in turn, aided the rationalization of the orthometalation reaction. The intra-cluster transitions (IC) at ∼690 nm consistently shifted to higher energies, and the redox pair [Ru3O]0/+1 also shifted to more positive E1/2 values. Again, the shifts were small and produced poor correlations with phenazine basicity. Overall, the substitution of one acetate bridge caused poor π-interactions between the delocalized [Ru3O] unit and the phenazine electron cloud. fsTA experiments, performed for the first time for such systems, showed that an 2IC excited state decayed very fast on the picosecond timescale.

Abstract
The preparation and properties of a new cyano complex containing the Ru3(μ3-O) core, [Ru3(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CN)] (1; py = pyridine), are reported. Complex 1 in CH2Cl2 showed intense absorption bands at 244, 334, and 662 nm, corresponding to a π-π* transition of the ligand, cluster-to-ligand charge transfer, and intracluster transitions, respectively. The cyclic voltammogram of 1 in 0.1 M (n-Bu)4NPF6-CH2Cl2 showed redox waves for the processes Ru3(II,II,III)/Ru3(II,III,III), Ru3(II,III,III)/Ru3(III,III,III), and Ru3(III,III,III)/Ru3(III,III,IV) at E1/2 = -1.49, -0.26, and +1.03 V vs Ag/AgCl, respectively. The first two redox potentials are more negative by ca. 0.2 V in comparison with the corresponding potentials of [Ru3(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)3](+). This is in sharp contrast to the positive shifts of the corresponding waves of [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CO)]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)3], [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CN)](-), and [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CO)] showed that the positive charge of the ruthenium is delocalized over the triruthenium cores of the first two and is localized as Ru(II)(CO){Ru(III)(py)}2 in the CO complex. The calculations explain the difference in the π interactions of the two ligands with the triruthenium cores.

Abstract
The mononuclear complex [Mn(tptz)(CH(3)COO)(OH(2))(2)]NO(3) (1) was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in aqueous solution at pH 4.5. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry shows that mononuclear and dinuclear manganese cationic species are present in solution, probably in equilibrium with neutral 1. An experiment showed that the most important reaction in the presence of oxone (2KHSO(5).KHSO(4).K(2)SO(4)) is decoordination.

Abstract
Coordination of nitric oxide (NO) to a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of a triruthenium (Ru(3)) cluster, [Ru(3)(micro(3)-O)(micro-CH(3)COO)(6)(CO)(L(1))(L(2))] (0) (L(1) = [(NC(5)H(4))CH(2)NHC(O)(CH(2))(10)S-](2), L(2) = 4-methylpyridine), on a gold electrode surface has been studied by electrochemical and in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopic measurements. Ligand substitution reaction of NO for carbon monoxide (CO) ligands in the SAM strongly depends on the oxidation state of the terminal Ru(3) cluster. NO can be introduced into the Ru(3) cluster in the SAM with a high yield after one-electron oxidation of the Ru(3) core to a (III,III,III) oxidation state, while no coordination reaction occurs at the initial oxidation state (II,III,III) of the Ru(3) cluster. The kinetics of the NO coordination and desorption processes is also evaluated by time-resolved in situ IR spectroscopy. Finally, we demonstrate that the SAM with NO/CO randomly mixed ligands at a desired ratio can be constructed on the gold surface by tuning a suitable oxidation state of the Ru 3 cluster under electrochemical control.

Abstract
Silica gel bearing isonicotinamide groups was prepared by further modification of 3-aminopropyl-functionalized silica by a reaction with isonicotinic acid and 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to yield 3-isonicotinamidepropyl-functionalized silica gel (ISNPS). This support was characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and specific surface area. The ISNPS was used to immobilize the [Ru(NH(3))(4)SO(3)] moiety by reaction with trans-[Ru(NH(3))(4)(SO(2))Cl]Cl, yielding [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(SO(3))]. The related immobilized [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(L)](3+/2+) (L=SO(2), SO(2-)(4), OH(2), and NO) complexes were prepared and characterized by means of UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, as well as by cyclic voltammetry. Syntheses of the nitrosyl complex were performed by reaction of the immobilized ruthenium ammine [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(OH(2))](2+) with nitrite in acid or neutral (pH 7.4) solution. The similar results obtained in both ways indicate that the aqua complex was able to convert nitrite into coordinated nitrosyl. The reactivity of [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(NO)](3+) was investigated in order to evaluate the nitric oxide (NO) release. It was found that, upon light irradiation or chemical reduction, the immobilized nitrosyl complex was able to release NO, generating the corresponding Ru(III) or Ru(II) aqua complexes, respectively. The NO material could be regenerated from these NO-depleted materials obtained photochemically or by reduction. Regeneration was done by reaction with nitrite in aqueous solution (pH 7.4). Reduction-regeneration cycles were performed up to three times with no significant leaching of the ruthenium complex.

Abstract
The immobilization and properties of the nitric oxide donor trans-[Ru(NO)Cl(cyclam)](PF(6))(2), RuNO, entrapped in a silica matrix by the sol-gel process is reported herein. The entrapped nitrosyl complex was characterized by spectroscopic (UV-vis, infrared (IR), X-ray photoelectron, and (13)C and (29)Si MAS NMR) and electrochemical techniques. The entrapped species exhibit one characteristic absorption band in the UV-vis region of the electronic spectrum at 354 nm and one IR nu(NO) stretching band at 1865 cm(-1), as does the RuNO species in aqueous solution. Our results show that trans-[Ru(NO)Cl(cyclam)](PF(6))(2) can be entrapped in a SiO(2) matrix with preservation of the molecular structure. However, in a SiO(2)/SiNH(2) matrix, the complex undergoes a nucleophilic attack by the amine group at the nitrosonium. Irradiation of the complex, entrapped in the SiO(2) matrix, with light of 334 nm, resulted in NO release. The material was regenerated to its initial nitrosyl form by reaction with nitric oxide.
