Abstract
Metal hydride complexes are key intermediates for N-alkylation of amines with alcohols by the borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) strategy. Reactivity tuning of metal hydride complexes could adjust the dehydrogenation of alcohols and the hydrogenation of imines. Herein we report ruthenium(ii) complexes with hetero-bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-phosphine ligands, which realize smart pathway selection in the N-alkylated reaction via reactivity tuning of [Ru-H] species by hetero-bidentate ligands. In particular, complex 6cb with a phenyl wingtip group and BArF- counter anion, is shown to be one of the most efficient pre-catalysts for this transformation (temperature is as low as 70 °C, neat conditions and catalyst loading is as low as 0.25 mol%). A large variety of (hetero)aromatic amines and primary alcohols were efficiently converted into mono-N-alkylated amines in good to excellent isolated yields. Notably, aliphatic amines, challenging methanol and diamines could also be transformed into the desired products. Detailed control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights to understand the mechanism and the smart pathway selection via [Ru-H] species in this process.

Abstract
The manifold interactions of (E)- or (Z)-1,2-ditosylethene with a palladium(0) centre bearing picolyl-NHC carbene ligands have been studied thoroughly. (E)-1,2-Ditosylethene produces the expected and stable η2-olefin palladium complexes, whereas the coordination of the Z derivative alternatively promotes the isomerization of the olefin itself or an oxidative addition process depending on the steric bulkiness of carbene substituents and/or the adopted synthetic procedure. Remarkably, the oxidative addition pathway involves a selective S-vinyl (not S-aryl) breaking and produces selectively the S- rather than O-coordinated sulfinate. A mechanistic study has clarified the reasons of the chemoselectivity of the process, which was proved to be kinetically controlled. All the involved species have been isolated and exhaustively characterized. In particular, we report the first example of the X-ray crystal structure of a complex bearing one vinyl and one S-sulfinate fragment coordinated to palladium.

Abstract
It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.

Abstract
Modifications on the ligand environment of Milstein ruthenium(II) pincer hydride catalysts have been proposed to fine-tune the activation free energy, ΔG(⧧) for the key step of H2 elimination in the water splitting reaction. This study conducted at the B3LYP level of density functional theory including the solvation effect reveals that changing the bulky t-butyl group at the P-arm of the pincer ligand by methyl or ethyl group can reduce the ΔG(⧧) by a substantial margin, ∼ 10 kcal/mol. The reduction in the steric effect of the pincer ligand causes exothermic association of the water molecule to the metal center and leads to significant stabilization of all the subsequent reaction intermediates and the transition state compared to those of the original Milstein catalyst that promotes endothermic association of the water molecule. Though electron donating groups on the pyridyl unit of the pincer ligand are advantageous for reducing the activation barrier in the gas phase, the effect is only 1-1.4 kcal/mol compared to that of an electron withdrawing group. The absolute minimum of the electrostatic potential at the hydride ligand and carbonyl stretching frequency of the catalyst are useful parameters to gauge the effect of ligand environment on the H2 elimination step of the water splitting reaction.

Abstract
The absence of solvent, associated with intensive mechanical agitation, allowed the first mechanosynthesis of high-value silver(I)-carbene complexes and the corresponding N,N-dialkylimidazolium precursors. This procedure gave outstanding results in terms of yield and reaction time, when compared to solution-based conditions previously described in literature, and was generalized to unprecedented compounds. Silver(I)-carbene complexes could either be obtained from N,N-dialkylimidazolium salts or directly from imidazole and alkyl halides in a one-pot two-step procedure without isolating the imidazolium intermediate. Additionally, an efficient one-pot three-step sequence, including imidazole alkylation, silver metalation, and transmetalation is reported.
