Solution Spin Crossover Versus Speciation Effects: A Cautionary Tale

Two acyclic tetradentate Schiff base ligands, HL^X-OH (X = H and Br), were synthesised by 2:1 condensation of either 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde or 5-bromo-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and 1,3-diamino-2-propanol and then used to prepare six mononuclear complexes, [Fe^II(HL^X-OH)(NCE)₂], with three different NCE co-ligands (E = BH₃, Se, and S). The apparent solution spin crossover switching temperature, T_1/2, of these 6 complexes, determined by Evans method NMR studies, is tuned by several factors: (a) substituent X present at the 5 position of the pyridine ring of the ligand, (b) E present in the NCE co-ligand, (c) solvent employed (P'), and (d) potentially also by speciation effects. In CD₃CN, for the pair of NCE = NCBH₃ complexes, when X = H, the complex is practically LS (extrapolated T_1/2 ∼624 K), whereas when X = Br, it is far lower (373 K), which implies a higher field strength when X = H than when it is Br. The same trend, X = H results in a higher apparent T_1/2 than X = Br, is seen for the other two pairs of complexes, with E = Se (429 > 351 K, ΔT_1/2 = 78 K) or S (361 > 342 K, ΔT_1/2 = 19 K). For the family of three X = Br complexes, the change of E from BH₃ (373 K) to Se (351 K) to S (342 K) leads to an overall ΔT_1/2(apparent) = 31 K, whereas the decreases are far more pronounced in the X = H family (BH₃ ∼624 > Se 429 > S 361 K). Changing the solvent used from CD₃CN to (CD₃)₂CO and CD₃NO₂, for [Fe^II(HL^Br-OH)(NCE)₂] with either E = BH₃ or S, revealed excellent, and very similar, positive linear correlations (R² = 0.99) of increasing solvent polarity index P' (from 5 to 7) with increasing apparent T_1/2 of the complex (E = BH₃ gave T_1/2 300 < 373 < 451 K , ΔT_1/2 = 151 K; E = S gave T_1/2 288 < 342 < 427 K, ΔT_1/2 = 147 K). Several other solvent parameters were also correlated with the apparent T_1/2 of these complexes (R² = 0.74-0.96). Excellent linear correlations (R² = 0.99) are also obtained with the coordination ability (a^TM) of the three NCE co-ligands with the apparent T_1/2 in both families of compounds, [Fe^II(HL^X-OH)(NCE)₂] where X = H or Br. The ¹⁵N NMR chemical shifts of the nitrogen atom in the three NCE co-ligands (direct measurement) show modest correlations (R² = 0.74 for L^H-OH family and 0.80 for L^Br-OH family) with the apparent T_1/2 values of the corresponding complexes.

Electronic and Spin-State Effects on Dinitrogen Splitting to Nitrides in a Rhenium Pincer System

Bimetallic nitrogen (N₂) splitting to form metal nitrides is an attractive method for N₂ fixation. Although a growing number of pincer-supported systems can bind and split N₂, the precise relationship between the ligand properties and N₂ binding/splitting remains elusive. Here we report the first example of an N₂-bridged rhenium(III) complex, [(trans-P₂^tBuPyrr)ReCl₂]₂(μ-η¹:η¹-N₂) (P₂^tBuPyrr = [2,5-(CH₂P^tBu₂)₂C₄H₂N]^-). In this case, N₂ binding occurs at a higher oxidation level than that in other reported pincer analogues. Analysis of the electronic structure through computational studies shows that the weakly π-donor pincer ligand stabilizes an open-shell electronic configuration that leads to enhanced binding of N₂ in the bridged complex. Utilizing SQUID magnetometry, we demonstrate a singlet ground state for this Re-N-N-Re complex, and we offer tentative explanations for antiferromagnetic coupling of the two local S = 1 sites. Reduction and subsequent heating of the rhenium(III)-dinitrogen complex leads to chloride loss and cleavage of the N-N bond with isolation of the terminal rhenium(V) nitride complex (P₂^tBuPyrr)ReNCl.

Carbenaporphyrins: No Longer Missing Ligands in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry

The synthesis of an NHC-containing porphyrinoid ligand is presented. The formally antiaromatic 20 πe- macrocyclic framework can be obtained via a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition ("click-reaction") to form two triazole moieties which were alkylated to the respective triazolium macrocycle. Deprotonation of the ligand precursor with lithium bases to the respective dilithio carbenaporphyrin complex and transmetallation to scandium lead to complexes that exhibit orange fluorescence. Optical property combined with TD-DFT studies verify an aromatic character for each heterocyclic moiety rather than an antiaromatic macrocycle in the ligand precursor as well as in the complexes. While the geometric features of the carbenaporphyrin ligand strongly resemble those of porphyrin, DFT calculations reveal a stronger electron-donating ability of the new ligand.

New types of Cu and Ag clusters supported by the pyrrole-based NNN-pincer type ligand

While the neutral ligand 2,5-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)pyrrole gives the dihalide ion bridged binuclear and coordination polymers, its anionic form affords a new type of tetranuclear ‘hourglass’ shaped copper(i) and triangular silver(i) clusters owing to its increased denticity.

Crystal structures of 2,6-bis[(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methyl]pyridine and 1,1-[pyridine-2,6-diylbis(methylene)]bis(4-methyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium) iodide triiodide

In the structures of the 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazoly-3-yl)methyl-substituted pyridine compound, C11H11N7, (I) and the iodide triiodide salt, C13H17N72+·I−·I3−, (II), the dihedral angles between the two triazole rings and the pyridine ring are 66.4 (1) and 74.6 (1)° in (I), and 68.4 (2)° in (II), in which the dication lies across a crystallographic mirror plane. The overall packing structure for (I) is two-dimensional with the layers lying parallel to the (001) plane. In (II), the triiodide anion lies within the mirror plane, occupying the space between the two triazole substituent groups and was found to have minor disorder [occupancy ratio 0.9761 (9):0.0239 (9)]. The overall packing of structure (II) can be described as two-dimensional with the layers stacking parallel to the (001) plane. In the crystal, the predominant intermolecular interactions in (I) and (II) involve the acidic hydrogen atom in the third position of the triazole ring, with either the triazole N-atom acceptor in weak C—H...N hydrogen bonds in (I), or with halide counter-ions through C—H...I interactions, in (II).
